Horizon: Zero Dawn

Think I'm about 3/4ths or more through the game now. Had some major reveals about the world. Game is more of a mixed bag for me than a lot of people.

Positives:

- Visually best game period. When you combine the art, technical aspects and scale, there isn't anything that measures up. Especially impressive in an open world game.

- Control: For an open world RPG, controls are fluid. Controls would stack up well to a linear action game.

- Polish: I ran into only one glitch so far. Glitches are generally expected in open world games prior to a bunch of patches. This game has low load times and the polish of a high budget linear action game.

Story and world: So far I'm finding the high level outline of the story to be interesting. Well thought out.

Negatives:

- A.I.: This isn't relegated to only Horizon. It's a beef I have with the industry. That said, the PS2 quality A.I. really stands out when everything else is trying to suck you into the world. The human A.I. Is embarrassingly bad. There is one mission where you're supposed to sneak through a base. I thought I'd approach it different and would lure and wipe out all the bad guys. They sent an infinite number of respawnig baddies after me and I think I managed to farm about 200 head shot kills before I did what the game forced me to do.

Combat: For a game with strong controls and fluid gameplay, the combat is just tedious. Not enough interesting sandboxes. Similar complaints I had with Tomb Raider. Bad AI combined with missed opportunities with the sandboxes. I have all these cool skills and weapons and there isn't a lot of varying setups to the environments to play with them in. There should be more verticality in some areas to sneak around.

Voice acting: There are a few good voice actors however that fact makes the main character's lack of emotion or expression stand out more. There are a few other characters that just sound out of place. You got people dressed up like bad asses that sound like weak, emotionless nerds.

Overall I keep going back and forth on how I feel. At times the game feels tedious because the combat plateaued early for me. When I go off the beaten path and explore, I feel that's when Horizon is at it's best. If the game didn't have such great visuals, I'd probably consider it an average open world game. That said, the visuals, both technically and artistically, make exploring this world far more interesting than exploring any other open world game.

I had a jarring episode returning to this after 40 straight hours of Zelda. Mixing the 2 games is like going from Mario Kart to Forza. Both great experiences but oh so different.

I agree with much of your post. To some extent also agree about the part on combat. The human AI is dumb as a rock letting you pile many bodies in one spot as they funnel down to investigate the latest corpse you made. A lot of the nicely designed campaign areas go to waste against the human enemies. Luckily most of the campaign missions end with a nice boss fight in a open area making up for the lackluster mission that preceded it.

But combat against the machines in the open world is fantastic. I think its as deep as the player allows it to be. I feel that if you approach the combat like a hunter it can play out in so many different ways. You can funnel machines into your traps for ambush by luring them with a whistle, startle them by attacking or override one of them to cause all hell to break loose. Sure, I can take down a Stormbird easily but why not override it and make it help take down that heard of Tramplers over there for parts and more importantly for fun. Once you get most of the weapons/skills and imagination this game's combat shines brighter than most.

And you're right this game its polished beyond any open world game I have played. Guerilla sure did a lot of things right. I've only had one crash in almost 60hrs of gaming. Overall I feel like this is one of the best games of this generation, something truly special. And that's largely due to the combat.

I don't know what's going on in my game world. One time I can't even look around without seeing a robot, then another time I can walk around collecting plants for nearly 10 minutes and nothing but animals are around. This happens in the same exact area and same time of day.

It's literally dark 75% of the time for me still.

I wish I could control the time of day. I would make it daylight the entire time.

I desagree. The combat has a tone of variety and epic moments. You can pretty create your own experiences especially with the enemy variety on on screen.

Completed

Too much walking, climbing, listening and watching in the last few missions for my liking.. i know they have to explain things but i didnt care tbh, i just wanted to blow robots up lol

a solid 8.5/10. most fun combat i played this gen

Updated 1.10 is out, adds the ability to buy multiple items by holding on X. Finally. Says it adjusted some item economy, robot and human AI, and facial animation improvements for several coversations. Sounds good on paper!

Did they make any changes to spear combat? Seems like when I first started there was a fine line between button mashing and waiting a second or so before the following hits of a combo. Last night though I noticed I could hit the attack a lot quicker.

Also, this game reminds me of a mix between Elder Scrolls and the movie Oblivion. Which is funny I guess considering the name. Anyways loved the game Oblivion but not so much Skyrim. That said beause of this game I might give Skyrim another chance at some point.

I will get back to this game when I am done with Nier. I do enjoy this game, but Nier has me addicted to it right now.

I didn't see anything wrong with facial animations. There were a few weird facial animations but it was for a very small amount of cutscenes and nothing really to complain about. But I guess since Horizon has so little bugs GG can focus on it.

I'm bummed that I'm so close to finishing the game. I think I'm on the last mission for the story and the only thing left to complete are 2 side missions and a few corrupted zones to clear. I guess I can go for the rest of the vantage points which are interesting. Ohh, the Shield Weaver outfit is awesome and I see why GG made it so you can only get it when you reach the end of the game.

The combat in Horizon is very dynamic and also praised by many reviewers. Nothing funny about what I said...

Are all those clips taken at 4K? I have a Pro and 1080P TV currently and those looks noticeably more vibrant and crisp than what I see. Looking forward to a 4K TV upgrade.

I finished the main game. 8.5 for me. When focusing on the main storyline, the gameplay was more like a 7.5. I liked the story and was pleasantly happy with how they explained everything. It wasn't the jumbled mess that a lot of game's stories become during the climax. They answered a lot of questions and mysteries in satisfying manner. Reason for a 7.5 is that the final 1/3rd of the game forces you to fight a lot of humans, explore a lot of similar corridors, and fight tedious bosses. Ironically playing through the main mission felt like somewhat of a grind while doing random side stuff was more addicting.

My core combat complaints stand. Game shines when you're in open world and can make choices of how you want to take on hordes of robots in open field. The traps, weak spots, and overrides add depth. Shooting the blaze on the back of machine and watching it explode and take out it's friends was great. When you're exposed and are forced to fight robots head on, it's average at best. Dodge is a bit inconsistent. I admit that playing Dark Souls 3 prior to this probably set the bar too high for defense while engaged in combat. I also wish there was a way to lock on to an enemy. Fighting humans is a completely chore. Again the terrible AI is so easy to exploit that there's no need to play smart or try different tactics.

While focusing on the main mission, I was able to run past most things outside of the bosses and mini-bosses. There's not enough incentive or reward to fighting machines. Often times you will waste more resources than you'll gain engaging in the tougher enemies so I found myself picking on the weaker enemies who carried enough of the stuff I'd need for my weapons.

There could be a smarter way to manage resources. I don't have the patience to remember everything the merchants wanted so I'm constantly passing up stuff that I later regret because you are always over capacity with your inventory. There should be a way to prioritize it so that more common items get automatically dropped when you decide to "take all".

I hope that they add some sort of incentive to take out more robots in the open world when the DLC comes out. I'd like to be forced to go back. Right now there's just no incentive outside of tinkering with different weapons and traps.

The game is so so good. I'm 50 hours in and only just after reaching Meridian.

I made it Meridian around 20 hours but about 7 hours later I am still exploring and doing side quests. Probably going to continue the story in around the next 5 hours or so.

I swear Kvally abuses the funny button.

I don't think he realizes it gives us a positive feedback when that really wasn't his intention. That's why i never complained. I'll take them any way i can get them.

Aw crap, i just let the cat out of the bag.

I just click on the button because I think the comments are funny.

Im about 70% complete in this game but that includes all side missions, errands, collectibles I would guess. Think I have 12 main missions done so not sure how many more I have to go.

Im about 10 hours in and this game just gets better and better and better.
Im taking my sweet ass time and doing all the side quests as they come up for the the most part.
f***ING LOVE THIS GAME.
