Horizon: Zero Dawn

I probably under-utilized ice in the game, but I've heard it's very handy in certain situations. I guess Rockbreakers are one of them. I'll have to try that.

Maybe he made one big pile of rocks. Either that, or he was constantly chucking them, everywhere he went, then picking them up again. People do weird sh*t.

In Morrowind, people would build pillow forts. Horizon doesn't work that way, though -- you can't stack rocks on top of each other.

I think I only used ice for two creatures in the whole game - the rock breaker and one of the other large ones (not the thunderjaw) I can't remember the name of right now.

You are supposed to use Ice Arrows on Chill Water containers like you do with Fire on Blaze and Electric on Power Cells.

I would like to take this moment to mention that I was thrilled to discover that you can disable those friggin' STUPID looking headdresses !! Huzzah! man, I wanted to punch the designer in the face for ruining every outfit with a head piece that made the protagonist look like a moron!

So my experience with the inferior TV I've been using has netted my a positive result! If I wasn't looking for a way to shrink the display size (text was being cut off by the edge of the screen), I never would have found this game-saving feature!!

With Sony dropping the price on this game they are definitely trying to expose this game to more people so when the sequel comes it will be even bigger. It cames 1st in the UK this week after a price drop. They have sold to the hardcore now it is time to try and entice casual gamers or people who have inquisitive interest but not fully sold.

Hey, at least she doesn't look as dumb as this guy:

What's with the necklace made of tangerines, btw? Is he trying to be festive? He doesn't seem like the festive type.

No, I do agree about the headgear; a lot of it makes her look goofy. It's a weird world, with primitive tribes, so I just factor that in. But I did have some trouble finding headgear that looked ok, and some of the headgear (e.g., for Carja Silks) sort of ruins it. I liked the Banuk Ice Hunter gear, although it was pretty nutty looking; I liked the colors and the way it framed her face. Nora Protector wasn't bad, pretty simple.

Where is the option to turn off the head gear?

The headgear can be turned off in the start menu options.

My avatar is just a character I created a long time ago. The necklace is a bit like prayer beads, but the guy's culture is all about open and closed hands- and the underlying sort of psychology between the two. Of course, he's the last one, along with four others who are each the last of their own, who are bonded though they are each responsible for the destruction of the other's civilizations, lol.

Oh, I didn't realize you created him. Are you a graphic artist?

Sorry, he doesn't look dumb. He looks very sharp in those prayer beads. Hail Mary, full of tangerines, blessed art thou amongst citrus, and blessed is the fruit of thy tree, oranges. Or something.

So he is the last of his kind, and he's with three other guys who are also the last of their kinds, and they're each responsible for the death of the others' civilization? That would probably be awkward.

Yeah, it's complicated. I have a bachelor's in Media Art and Animation. I've been messin' with 3d graphics for a long while. I don't do 3d professionally, as my job doesnt call for it (yet). There isn't much money in gaming, and I don't do production quality 3d.

I'd like to get into game graphics in my spare time, but life's been so transient/hectic for me since I got out of the Army. I have UE4 and Unity, but haven taught myself to use them yet.

I'm about to move into a (hopefully) forever home I designed myself, though, so I hope I can slow down and maybe make some small games.

Sounds like that could make for a good game. Call Microsoft.

"With Sony revealing that Horizon Zero Dawn had moved over 3.4 MILLION copies since launch, it was only time before Guerrilla Games would release some new updated player stats and they did so via an email.
  • Aloy has destroyed over 545,000,000 watchers.
  • Over 1,285,000,000 of those annoying bandits have been put to rest.
  • Aloy has died over 185,000,000 times..damn.
  • More than 285,000,000 fire arrows have been crafted.
  • The toughest non-boss machine in the game? The corrupted Sawtooth. Really?! Those corrupted Rockbreakers were a pain my Aloy’s ass!
  • Some guy or girl has picked up over 12,000 rocks. If this is you.. PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY!!
With the “Days of Play” lowering the price of HZD to $39.99, plus the holidays coming up fast, these stats will only continue to climb higher for one of the best PlayStation 4 exclusives around."

I agree with him -- my vote for toughest enemy would probably go to a corrupted Rockbreaker in the wild. I never did get a handle on them. I remember running into a pair of them in the open, and it was all I could do to get out of there alive.

Lol at the guy who picked up 12,000 rocks. He must've really liked rocks. You can only hold 10, so he must've chucked at least 11,990 of them.
i would say it was me but i only picked up 11,459 :(

I throw them, and the robots look for a second, then continue on their programmed trail.

Hide in the bushes, toss a rock a few feet from the bushes' edge, robot comes over to investigate, stab robot. I did that a lot in the early going. Later, I learned to whistle.

Playing this right now. Good game but the lip syncing is really bad.
I really have quite the dislike for her "I'm done with my sentence now, so I will stare at the space between us with my mouth open" face. It's a shame too, because the modeling is fine. I just can't suspend my disbelief that they aren't real during dialogue sequences.

Anyhow, after 120 hours or so, I didn't find the combat tedious. I was impressed by how many different approaches there were and how each battle unfolded differently.

What's great about Horizon is how many ways you can approach enemies or finding rare items that actually do something. It makes exploring a lot more meaningful than something like TR. The Cauldrons are fun to play even more so than raiding Tombs.

Horizon has some issues but it's definitely not repetitive. Overall it's a really good game.

Her mouth is normally closed after she talks. Sounds like your nit picking. Also lip syncing issues are common in open world games.

I've noticed it plenty, and no, this game definitely sits firmly in the uncanny valley. Still a great game though. Lots of games have lip syncing issues, yes. Doesn't mean these are good either. They just look like dead dolls to me, it's not just the lip syncing. I've always found GG's games to have this issue (almost exactly the same as KZ 4). Witcher 3 and any Ass Creed game have superior facial capture.

It is a bit repetitive. Bandit camps are essentially the same each time and I felt the cauldrons were annoyingly similar as well.

Still a great game, but I would like better human AI and more environmental interaction in the sequel. I also want to be able to command overridden machines and ride glint hawks.

Bandit camps played out differently for me each time, depending on how I approached them. There were only 5, so hard to feel repetitive. I wanted more bandit camps, but also liked Guerilla's restrained game design, vs. the content-stuffing approach you get in other open world games (e.g., Rockstar, Ubisoft).

Each cauldron also felt unique to me. Different layouts, different enemies, always a different nasty surprise at the end. I always hesitated to go in, wondering what I was getting myself into this time. There were only 5 (?) of them, I believe, so they didn't overstay their welcome, for me. I thought they added a lot of variety to the game, and a different dimension (in terms of environment and backstory).

I agree that the bandits were not particularly bright. I was okay with that. I think it was an intentional choice (machines were supposed to be the threat, not humans), but I hear other people complaining about that, too.

Riding glint hawks sounds fun, or maybe a Stormbird, or maybe galloping around town on a Thunderjaw.

Nah, you are the type person that focuses on weird chit that no one notices. The facial capture does need work but you're exaggerating .

Actually, he isn't. I am playing through the game right now and can confirm his experience.

It's certainly not the worst, but it suffers from having amazing visuals in that expectations rise. It juxtaposes with everything else. Great animation in the movement, fantastic lighting and environmental detail. Realistic representations of humans. This all combines to highlight when something isn't hitting the right notes. It also doesn't help that there are many big budget games that do get it right most of the time.

I'm not sure you can apply the Open World argument either, as the fact that they are capturing the faces shows it's not a technological thing (like having to render longer draw distances/shadows/detail that you can't rely on being occluded on one side). They just haven't nailed it yet. That's understandable, but doesn't mean it doesn't detract from the overall experience, imo.

I do focus on small details, yes. I also played quite a bit last night, and she DOES leave her mouth open after speaking, a LOT. I'm sure it's intentional to try and convey some type of emotion/life, but they just don't do it right, imo.

I noticed the facial animation issues, too. It pulled me out of the game for a second, but I didn't get hung up on it. No big deal; I don't expect games to be perfect. Witcher had better facial animation, no doubt (that way, you could better see his lack of emotional expression). The main thing was that I found Aloy and the others interesting and engaging characters.

Yeah with the rest of the game looking so great, the lip sync and animation in the conversations were jarring to me when I first encountered them.

I guess she gets more interesting as the story goes? Because she's a hyper-boring, one dimensional Mary Sue right now. Of course, this is going by he dialogue mainly for Side quests, as I usually do all my open-worlding before doing the main story. I think I'm only at level 15 story missions where I am a level 42 character. Almost every character I've run across so far seems to only have a surface depth. Again, this may change as I get further in the story.

The facial animation is just unfortunate. It doesn't ruin the game, but it does make it harder to connect with the characters.

I always loved Geralt's subtle personality (it's very evident if you look, and very impressive how deliberate is, imo). The little looks they put in there, and you can see his underlying sarcasm and sense of humor. I find it strange when people say he has a lack of expression- it's subtle, but it's all over the place. He feels like a real person, and he has plenty of flaws. Damn I love that game :D

Yeah, I did notice some facial animations looking a little funny and some out of sync speech during cutscenes. But I was able to overlook that stuff because everything else was done so well. The combat especially is the highlight for me with this game. I also did notice the rather dumb human AI at the Bandit Camps. But then I started having fun with the Camps by setting traps and causing all kinds of funny situations. And for the last few Camps I stopped using stealth and came in riding a Broadhead causing all kinds of chaos. One of the reasons these open-world sandbox games are so fun for me is because you can use your imagination to come up with different ways to complete tasks.

Where's the Horizon DLC. I want it now.

I love stealth, so It's my goal to stealth kill everyone. Luckily that dumb AI makes this possible! Headshots!
