Rate your Pro, as a console.

I gave it an 8.0. 2 points off for sub-optimal hardware.

+ some of the games look as good (to me) as any 4K game I've seen, e.g., Horizon.
+ hardware is a decent step up from the base PS4
+ improves PSVR
+ great exclusives (can't leave this out)

- weak compared to the X -- half the pixel-pushing power
- no 4K BluRay player
- Usually can't do 4K
- Can't take full advantage of my 4K TV

I went 8.5. I can't add much to what you have, agree with all of the above.

Negatives:
-Sounds like someone vacuuming inside of a helicopter at times :)
-The shape - how exactly are you supposed to plug stuff in the back the way it is slanted?
-Not quite as much power as others
-No 1st party pro/elite controller

Positives:
-Works great with PSVR
-Great exclusive lineup
-Simple UI

Just to keep it unbiased i'll give it a 9. Great console made even better with the best games this generation has to offer. I've had a blast playing my PS4 Pro. Would buy again. That FauxK got me knocking off a point tho. How we supposed to enjoy truly amazing games without dat true 4K Sony?

Sound levels, 10 out of 11 (it is the latest pro)... granted it’s still in the box, but I swear it’s possessed by some wondering soul of an ancient Egyptian cat, I seen it glow and meow at night >,<

8.0

I liked it pretty well in the beginning, but disappointed in the multiplatform games now. I may have waited for the X1X instead if I didn't already own almost 40 games on the PS4 compared to just 4 on the X1. I'm a bit annoyed with some of these newer games pushing the system hard and finally making the fan sound a nuisance, plus seeing the resolution differences on the recent multiplatform games is disappointing as well. The Xbox is not friendly to those with crap internet connections this gen which resulted in them losing my business.

Overall, it meets my specific needs much better than the competition, so I can't knock the console too much.

Well I think Pro is great main console. The X is a good if you have the extra money but I give Pro an edge simply cause it has a balance of power, games and features.

Pro is my PSVR and exclusives machine, X1X is my multiplatform and backward comp machine.

Seems like two or three in your minus column are basically the same thing :)

As a whole console gaming experience it's the one to own right now IMO. It's not the most powerful but first party games do an amazing job of looking like they are native 4K even if they aren't. It has (for my money) better exclusives than it's main competitor, best picture/video sharing set up of any console, free to play MP games don't require a paid sub and games install faster than the main competitor as well.

8.5 for me. Loud fan and lack of appealing exclusives for me drop it. It’s a solid secondary machine that is for sure.

Yeah, there is some repetition there, but I'm looking at the same thing from different angles. For instance, "Usually can't do 4K" is a reference to the games themselves, whereas "Can't take advantage of my 4K TV" is more about the value I am getting out of my TV purchase.

I'll add a few more minuses, to add to the variety:

- Sub-par construction that resulted in all the complaints about noise level. It's not something I have had a problem with, but loads of people have. Makes it look sort of half-assed.
- It doesn't do much to upgrade performance of old games, especially in comparison to the X.
- It doesn't look as good, aesthetically, as either the original PS4 or the X.

I'll add a couple positives, too:

+ installation times are much better than X.
+ since it's been available a year longer, people have been able to enjoy the benefits longer

It's really the games that make it, for me. I subsisted almost entirely on PS4 exclusives from 2016 through mid-2018 -- two and a half years. They have had a ton of great exclusives this generation, and that's why I've been a Sony guy almost the whole time. MS doesn't stack up at all, in that regard, imo. My usual attitude is "It's all about the games." But for the purposes of this poll, it's more about the console itself, the hardware.

7.5.

- Worse looking/performing multiplats
- cheaply made plastic shell
- loud/audible fan when under a load (even on second gen PS4 Pro with supposed "quiet" Nidec fan, I also replaced the thermal paste with high quality Noctua stuff, no difference as the thermal paste wasn't dry on this)
- checkerboard upscaling artifacts are noticeable (which is used in a lot of games, especially in first party titles)
- sluggish dashboard UI if a game is running in background
- cheaper than Xbox One X, but you get what you pay for here.

I'm not going to talk about exclusives because those are playable on regular PS4 as well, so that doesn't apply here.

It's a decent console but I would not have bought one with my own money if it wasn't a christmas gift.

That's a positive, no?

I forgot to mention that, in my list. $100 cheaper is not insignificant.

You left out the rest of that which was me saying "you get what you pay for"

I have found installs on my Pro and X to to identical.

I know I did, because I wanted to highlight the fact itself, rather than what sounded like a dismissal of it. It looked to me as if you were just providing a long list of negatives, but that last item ($100 less) is something most people would consider a positive, so it didn't make sense. But I guess you see it as a negative.

I have found installs on my Pro and X to to identical.

Really? I've found the opposite. I should clarify I'm talking about downloading a game, not installing it from disc. It's been a while, but as best I can recall, downloading games took like 5 or 6 hours. I found it really weird, because MS is so big on internet services, yet the downloads are like sucking pine tar through a straw.

The fan noise thing seems to be blown out of proportion, mine has only ever been loud in the God of War menu and a couple of other game menus, strangely that's when my One X makes the most noise as well, in menu screens, other than that I never really hear it. The One X doesn't do a whole lot for older games either, and don't forget older games already looked better on the PS4 than the standard One/S so there was less work to do, MS does force better texture filtering on old games but so many of the old games are 900P or less that it's hard to notice.. No BC is something that overall isn't a huge issue for most but it's a feature that's better to have than not have for sure.

One thing I think is wrong in this thread is those of us who own both machines are rating the PS4 Pro by comparing it to the One X which doesn't seem fair to either machine (and we've all pretty much done it) How good the experience is on one doesn't really have anything to do with the experience on the other.

Yes, I feel this way, too, and that's been my experience as well, but I can't ignore all the complaints about fan noise. I think a lot of people got stuck with a noisier unit than you and I did. Bad luck for them, good luck for us, I guess. But we can't use our own experience as the gauge, because it's clear that many other people are experiencing problems with fan noise.

I think that's a different question -- "How good has your personal experience been with the Pro (or X)?" If I were to answer that question, I'd give my Pro a big ol' 10, because I've enjoyed the hell out of it, and I'd give my X a 3 or 4, because I've played maybe 20 hours total on it so far (only owned it a few months) and the gaming experiences have been fine but nothing particularly memorable so far. But I'm asking for an assessment of the console/hardware. Naturally, personal experience colors that assessment, as you can see in many of the replies, but I'm really trying to ask about an assessment of the console/hardware itself, rather than your personal experience with it.

As for comparisons, yeah, I heard someone earlier today refer to comparisons as the road to misery. But it's hard not to compare, and comparisons are part of how we rate things. I mean, we rate games based on how they stack up against other games. We rate movies based on how they stack up against other movies. Etc. So it's hard to escape comparison. It's fun when it's a downward comparison ("I'm better than you"), as Xbox fans are able to do now, but not so fun when it's going the other direction.

I have both (as do you) so it's not such a big deal but asking someone to rate a console really should mean how do you enjoy that particular machine IMO. As I said I'm guilty of doing the same thing but comparing consoles that came out a year apart with a $100 price difference seems a bit off to begin with. It was one thing to compare how games ran on the standard X1 and the PS4 because they launched in the same month and the PS4 was actually $100 cheaper but the Pro and One X are different because of the length of time between when they actually released and of course the cost that game with upgrading the console to make it stronger even with that one year difference.

Hey, make your own poll, lol.

Yes, it's an uneven comparison.

I want to go back to your main point, because I think it is worth underlining. It's important to distinguish 1) an objective assessment of the console hardware (the subject of this poll), and 2) your personal experience with that console (not the subject of this poll). Those two things can be worlds apart. Ultimately, I think it's your personal experience with the console that really matters.

I think that's a good point. Thanks for bringing it up.

You should prolly warranty it then. That is NOT normal behavior on One X as proven by re-pasting the APU.

It's not loud most of the time or anything it's just in the menu in some games the fan kicks up, it's weird but that's when both of the consoles actually make enough noise for me to hear, otherwise they are both totally fine. If it starts making more noise during gameplay I'll trade it in, I got the 2 year warranty at gamestop.
