Hurricane Harvey

Don't stop at that closed grocery store! Only six more miles to go until you reach a shelter that may have food! Don't be p*****.

Or those people jusrt driving on the other side of the freeway could just pick them up.

Absolutely, but what does that have to do with needing to do what is necessary to survive? The fact that your stance is basically, "f*** off and die. Don't you dare steal food for survival," is awful.

The amount of damage appears to be unfathomable. The people who lost their lives, not to mention the vast number of people who literally lost every single possession...can you imagine what you would do if your home and everything in it was destroyed like that.

Yeah my cousin's home was destroyed but they left when evacuation was recommended.

Evacuation was not advised/recommended for a majority of the area. Brazoria County was advised to evacuate until the levee broke which is too late.
Yeah recommended was the wrong word. They just used their common sense based on their situation.

UK Just going through a heat wave.

Stuff on the news has been scary

More places started getting evacuated yesterday and this morning, now people I know are stuck in the path and can't get out.

My work is currently matching all donations by employees and processing administrative fees so all of our donations are going directly to the source. I was more than happy to donate a bit. Just a couple of years ago my hometown got decimated by Sandy and the support was phenomenal. I feel obligated to return the favor in any way that I can.

I'm sure if someone was working the register these people would have paid for the food. Maybe they left the money on top of the floating merchandise?

I grew up in Spring (NW Houston) and my parents and brother are still there. My folks who are 80 years old had to evacuate by boat yesterday as the water had risen to their garage. It was waist high on their street and they were basically on a big island with no exit. My brother was able to get to them and they found an area where evacs were going on with dozens of volunteers who had their boats to help. By grace they were able to return to their home today as the waters subsided just a foot or 2 from entering their home. They feel blessed but it's hard to be happy when so many others are facing serious trouble.

They are now calling this a 1,000 year flood which you rarely ever hear designated. My heart goes out to all those affected. This one is going to take a really long time to recover from for many good people.

Does anyone from Texas recommend a specific charity to aid the Houston area. I am a cheap ass, but I'll donate for something like this.

I like to research first or donate to local groups on the ground like shelters or food banks rather than generic national groups.

Glad your parents are ok.

As for the posts about looting, in cases like this I don't think any store really cares since a flooded business has insurance to reimburse them. For crisis like flooding, most/all things will be thrown out anyway since it's a safety hazard of contamination, mold, and expired goods even if some things are off the ground and no water touches it. There's even government laws dealing with flooded businesses.

So if any people need to make a last ditch attempt at food, it shouldn't be an issue. The store employees themselves are getting their asses out of town as well.

However, anyone taking advantage of a situation like this and going into abandoned stores to profit stealing non-essentials is a crook. Yes, the store will likely get insurance claims, but it still doesn't mean you can loot stores for profiteering.

That's like me living in Houston and stealing my neighbour's car or going into his home. He and his family are already out of town and left their second car in the driveway. That doesn't mean I can go into his house and steal any valuables he left behind just because his insurance company will cover him.

Thoughts and prayers for the people affected. People are really going to have to pull together to get through this and I'm sure that Texan spirit will help them do just that.

A couple of us made it to work. Some roads in town closed because of water. Still raining hard in this area might start clearing up by this evening.

Two people was driving a truck outside a town and a tree fell on their truck and killed them while they were driving down the road. Crazy, could you imagine the odds of that happening.

Stay safe, man.
