In 1989 I was ten. Batman was the big blockbuster film and all the kids were into it, from sticker books, lunch boxes and toys to comics, Prince songs and computer games.

The licensed game of the film was very good, made by Ocean who specialised in licensed games and released them every year by the bucket load. Not always great but usually polished.

I had an Amstrad CPC and absolutely loved this game, the visuals, the music, the platforming, the rock hard Batmobile stage, everything. The CPC was on its last legs by then but I didn't care, ignorance was bliss.

So fast forward to today and I'm playing Injustice: Gods Among Us, thinking what an incredible thing this would be to that Kid from 1989 who thought Keaton's Batman was super cool.

I would have been gobsmacked by this game. There are lots of games I could pick from which are even more graphically impressive, but I don't think they would have had quite the impact of the 3D comic book violence in Injustice. I don't think even the Arkham Batman games would have had the same impact. Of course, my Mum would not want anything so violent anywhere near me, but I had already seen Evil Dead 2, Nightmare on Elm Street and Critters by sneaking down early one morning to watch the rented VHS left on the coffee table. I was well versed in ultra violence.

This would have been the perfect game for my younger self, now you pick one.

Cool story bro!

It is 1995, I am a 12 year old kid sitting playing the newest game for his Sega Saturn, The Need for Speed. This is my first time with a serious racer trying to be a racing sim. The game was awesome the game was hard. I was hooked and mesmerised by it.

Fast forward to today and Games Like Forza Would have blew my mind as a kid.

The funny thing is, they don't realize how good they have it....there are so many quality looking titles to choose from across all genres. Every single genre is just amazing...compare any shooting/driving/RPG game to anything that was released 10 years ago and its pretty mind blowing.

You have to wonder graphically where the plateau is....at some point is the exponential rate that processing power goes up from generation to generation going to slow a little.

So true. I remember playing games like Sensible Soccer, compare that to today's FIFA and the progress made is astonishing. If you told me back in 1995 when I was playing FIFA 95 that would FIFA would be like it is today I would have had you committed. The graphics, The physics, The audio, The online game modes, Ultimate Team, A.I have all progressed at a rather sensational rate.

That is only 2 decades of gaming. Imagine where we might be in 2030:surprise:

Technically, I would say it already has this gen. However, in general terms, I do not see the rate deteriorating at such a rate that we do not see continual progress made. Once we can get hardware cheap enough to acheive full on ray tracing, you will see a significant jump in graphical prowess.

There have been so many advances in gaming in my lifetime. Its not just the graphics, its the amount of content, the online, the musical scores, motion capture, etc. People look at me some times like I'm immature for still gaming at 40 (especially my wife), but honestly, its like opening a good book to me.

The advances made are vast, so vast that I doubt any one person could list them all. It is easy to forget too, we just came off an 8 year gen and so far this gen it is very similar. It isn't till you go back and look that you see the real advances. For example--and a more obvious one--Forza's driveatars. While they are not perfect they do add a new dynamic to the racing in Forza 5.

as for gaming being immature, eh. Immature or not, I love it and I ain't stopping for nobody.

Hell, its not just the games that are advancing, look at all the systems can do beyond the games themselves....they have user interfaces, friends lists, news feeds, apps, stores, hard drives, wireless ethernet ports, can stream music/video/pictures from other connected PCs, can take screenshots and video captures, can be voice and motion controlled, the controllers are way more advanced including triggers/tons of buttons/rumble feedback....the list goes on and on.

15 years.

What's amazing about that video is the ps1 version has much more accurate car effects, but its still not exact. That in no way sounds like a vetter in the ps3 version AT ALL, take it from someone who has owned LS motors his entire life. Graphically though, its huge, but I had to mute the sound just to be able to watch it on ps3.

Just the move from 2d to 3d in general would blow my mind. Man going from nes to today? Plus the 60 inch tv would be a far cry from our "huge" 25 inch enclosed in wood. :)

Yeah pretty much anything today would amaze myself as a child. My first system pre-dated the Atari 2600....it was basically just Pong but I'm pretty sure it had some sort of light gun..? Anyways, it was black and white.

I remember seeing the first ad for the Turbo Grafix 16 and thinking 'graphics will never get any better!'

But I'm still glad I grew up in the NES times.
Metroid, Zelda, and Mega Man blew my f'n mind, man. I feel like it takes so much to impress kids today, and that's kinda sad.

I think literally every single game I've played this generation would blow my 12 year old self away. Ryse, Forza, Ori, all of them.

The new Smash Bros game would probably knock me out of my seat when I was a kid. Was such a huge fan of the original.

4 games equally (not 1sorry) really made a impression on me as a child.
not in order and all nes (hated atari)

Rygar
Castlevania 2 Simons Quest
The Legend of Zelda
Pro Wrestling

With modern equivalents being...

Demons Souls
BloodBorne
Fire Pro Wrestling Returns
Borderlands 2

How about Castlevania:SoTN to Ori and the Blind Forest.
