Just showed Forza Horizon 4, but I missed it. Watching BFV now.

This Inside Xbox is REALLY good.

That’s sad, always thought they were successful in their own market. The videogame industry must be rough

Seems to be a case of expanding too quickly. And those licenses must be expensive. They probably should have done some original IP and not relied solely on the outside licensed IP.

That's unfortunate. Hopefully those let go can find work quickly at another studio.

Holy s***. The Walking Dead Season 1 is one of my favorite gaming experiences from the last 10 years.

I really hope they all land on their feet soon. Maybe MS can buy them out?

I heard a rumor earlier. Looks like it is substantiated then?

Wow, I wonder what went wrong. I have my own armchair analysis -- they grew too fast, lost focus on quality, instead just tried to cash grab by churning out one series after another in a fairly formulaic way, oversaturated their own market, and wrecked the pedigree of their own brand. But I have no idea what the actual factors were.

Additional info (sorry for triple post):

"Many of those issues seem to stem from Kevin Bruner, the company’s former CEO ousted in early 2017, and some of those in his management team, sources said. Bruner is now suing the company he co-founded. An expose published by the Verge, and reinforced by sources speaking with Variety on the condition of anonymity, reveals the hostile work environment he fostered and why the company made some of its poor decisions.

"Variety sources say a series of poor managerial decisions, excessive crunch periods, and Bruner’s own ego led the company to the brink of ruin. Telltale was in desperate need of a “corporate reboot” according to insiders."

And here's Telltale's tweet:

I’ve played some of TWD season 1 and own some of their other games just haven’t got around to playing all of them. From what I’ve seen they told good stories. Sucks for people to lose their jobs over what seems like poor management.

I cant see it happening. MS could probably find the staff employment homes though. The games were good enough, I personally couldnt see myself playing any of the games more than once though.

Update 4 [4:12pm]: As information continues to come out of today's announcement that Telltale Games is closing, and particularly in light of Telltale's statement, there are new revelations to the situation at Telltale.

We previously reported that a skeleton crew will remain behind to complete work on The Walking Dead Final Season. That information was inaccurate. Sources who wish to remain anonymous explained that there is a skeleton crew at Telltale, but they will be working on the Minecraft Story Mode project for Netflix. In fact, The Walking Dead team was also laid off today and The Walking Dead Final Season will not be completed.

This matches with the statement issued by Telltale games where the company promised to "fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners." Our sources say The Walking Dead Final Season is set to end after the second episode launches next week.

I think they just took on too many projects and licenses. It’s kind of weird to me that they kept taking projects on when they weren’t gaining income.

I wonder if their new engine, wait, were they developing a new engine or using a third party engine to make their new games? Could that have been part of their problem?

Oh, that's too bad. I wasn't all that interested in the story, but I was looking forward to some sort of wrap up. In fact, I was hoping that with the closure, they would really send the series out with a bang (rather than some lame setup for a spinoff). I guess that won't happen. It'll just end abruptly at Episode 2.

Eh. Maybe they'll quickly write something into the second episode. Clem and AJ make a wrong turn down a street and get eaten by zombies. The End.

I believe they were migrating to Unity starting w/ Stranger Things. And it could be, I just am spit balling about possibilities myself.

Sounds like they aren't even finishing TWD. That is messed up but I am glad I waited to buy it.

Wow.

But not a complete surprise. Too many projects all copy and paste of one another and all had countless technical issues.

Been reports of issues over the years not to mention lawsuits from left colleagues.

That's ashame. I hate seeing good people lose a job.

I have no idea what happened, but for awhile there they were doing project after project and usually the same type of game. Too much of the same thing and people weren' t as receptive.

Not a fan of their games but it's sad so many people are losing their jobs, hopefully with a new gen coming up a lot of other devs will be hiring and most of these people will land on their feet.

Wow, this sucks. I love their games. I bought the season pass for the final season of TWD. I never expected TT would actually go bankrupt.

What will happen for people like you who bought the Season Pass? Are you just out of luck, or will TWD issue refunds?

It's looking bad..there's no word on this on their twitter or offical site. I guess everyone who bought the season pass are pretty much screwed.

Yeah, that's what I'm hearing, too. Bummer.

Second and final episode is scheduled for release in a few days, 9/25. It's called "Suffer the Children."

More like "Suffer the Employees" ...

I saw that tweet as well. That’s terrible. I suspect we will see many tweets like this soon..

I saw a tweet from someone saying they were still hiring just last week including someone who moved across the country.

Sheesh. I don't even know what that is classified as. Irresponsible? Negligent? I know Telltale was struggling with generating income and if that was last week, how could they justify hiring someone new? I suspect they even contributed to this person's relocation costs.

I know the industry is very thankless at times, but these cases seem really egregious.

I am happy to see that a lot of places are reaching out to former Telltale employees to discuss employment opportunities, though.
