Critics hate it. They say that Iron Fist is Netflix/Marvel's first failure.

I think Luke Cage was pretty bad to be honest. I mean, none of the Netflix/Marvel shows have been awesome. They all have their boring stretches, but Luke Cage never got off the ground.

I'll give Iron Fist a chance, especially since I know very little about the character.

The showrunner is a guy who ran Dexter into the ground. It being bad is no surprise.

Apart from Daredevil I think Marvels show have been poor.

Luke Cage isn't to bad. It's just slow. Daredevil is excellent and widely regarded as a critical success for Marvel. The Punisher should be good when it comes along if the character stays like is in Daredevil. Never heard of Iron Fist but il check it out.

Daredevil was awesme. Enjoyed it more than most of the big blockbuster movies. Shame season 2 wasn't half as good.

Luke Cages problem was it built up tension then released it with passive vocals time and time again.

I'll watch Iron Fist myself, but I think it's a character that should have been introduced without needing much of an origin (like Hawkeye or Black Widow in Avengers). It's a flaw with comic movies and TV thinking the origin story is always the most important thing. Lots of films and TV has heroes who are badasses without delving too much into how they got to be that way. Iron Fist has been been favourite of mine since I was a kid and I never even read his back story or cared about it. I read up on it recently and it sounds dull as hell.
He is just a goofy guy with wicked kung fu skills and good chemistry with Cage. That's the selling point, IMO. Should have just done Cage season 2 as a Heroes for Hire show.

As for the other Netflix shows, I can not understand the Cage apathy. I really liked Luke Cage. It's probably my favourite of them all. I think Cage and Jessica Jones were both good at reflecting social issues through a superhero lens without getting preachy or trying to carry a message.
Daredevil (both seasons) was good as as straight up action super hero show, Cage and Jones managed to add additional depth while taking a slight hit in the action department.

Also, as a (half) Chinese guy and generally fairly left wing kind of guy, I think the complaints of cultural appropriation and whitewashing are bulls***.
People can complain that Marvel film and TV lacks Asians of significance, but there is no real logic behind the push for Danny to be Asian. There's no sense in changing the source material or giving the actor a hard time.
What they should be complaining about is why they struggled and pushed hard to make an Iron Fist show at all, when they could have made Shang Chi: Master of Kung Fu. They wouldn't have had to change the source material, they would have satisfied people demanding representation and they could havehave introduced Danny/Iron Fist without needing to make his origin into a thing.

I know I'll like watch it. I've been seeing the bad reviews. I thought Luke Cage was great until the last half of the season. I also like Jessica Jones even though I found myself bored through a few episodes.

The problem with Luke Cage was the villain. Cottonmouth=great. Diamondback=s***

I've found ALL of the Netflix Marvel shows to be a bit too long. I think 8-10 episodes would work better.
I didn't realise these reviewers had only seen the first 6 episodes though. It doesn't mean the show is going to be awesome, but it might pick up toward the end.

Yeah, Diamondback was s*** but Cottonmouth and the Purple Man were done very well. Luke Cage oozed with atmoshpere but the middle of the season lacked some serious punch. I liked all the Marvel netflix shows. They all had their own feel and flavor.

The Punisher is a big reason why I liked DD season 2. Whoever wrote the Punisher did a great job. I really enjoyed the dialogue he had with DD and Karen (esp. the diner convo). I didn't like what they did with Elektra. To me she just wasn't the mysterious, calculated and cold blooded character I've grown to love in the comics.

As for Iron Fist: I've heard Lewis Tan auditioned for Dany Rand and he almost had the role..so much so that they were talking scheduling. Now, he's playing the villain. I think it was a missed opportunity on Marvel's part to cast him for Danny Rand. Finn Jones doesn't exactly come to mind when I think of Danny Rand either. Everytime I saw him in trailers I just didn't see Danny.

Marvel's problem is that aside from The Totally Awesome Hulk and Silk comics there's not a lot of asian representation in their storylines. This carries over to the small and big screen. When there are asian characters they're the sidekick, crime lords, the love interest or evil ninjas getting their ass kicked by Daredevil. They can't catch a break. It'll be a while before Amadeus Cho makes it to the cinema. Thankfully, asian Marvel heads can enjoy seeing Ken Leung play Karnak (so cool!) in the Inhumans soon.

Just watched the first two episodes. THIS SHOW IS FANTASTIC...at least so far. I am hooked.

Just finished Luke Cage and started on Jessica Jones. Once I'm done with that I'll be on to this.

I can't wait for the Punisher.

Just finished all 13 episodes. Practically binged them, but eventually I tried to pace myself because I didn't want it to end.

Such a great show. The plot surprised me the most, as it isn't straight-forward. I can't wait for the second season!
That is great to hear.

Will get to watching it tomorrow.

I'm through episode 5, I'm enjoying it quite a bit too. My only gripe is that as a big MMA fan, ysome of the fight choreography looks extremely fake, but it's forgivable. Much better show than I was expecting based on reviews.

I was lying in bed last night thinking about how similar Iron Fist is to Game of Thrones. Here's a short list of commonalities:

  1. Politics
  2. Sibling rivalry
  3. Betrayal and backstabbing
  4. Faction wars
  5. Magic
  6. Resurrection of the dead
  7. The main kingdom/"throne"
  8. Melee weapons
  9. Religion
  10. Culture shock
  11. Finn Jones
  12. Dragon

Watched the first two episodes and think it's great! Interesting plot and story good characters. I agree with the fighting would be great if we could get something in the vein of in to the badlands but doesn't detract too much from the overall experience.

Up to episode 7 so far and it is no where near as bad as critics made it out to be - it's almost as if they've been waiting for their chance to absolutely s*** on a Marvel show/film. Could be better in plenty of ways, but it's decent TV. Not the disaster it's been made out to be at all.

I am. about 5 eps in and so far I am not convinced. Also, this is another show that falls way short of Daredevils combat scenes. They are poorly edited and acted out.

My opinion changed considerably the further I got in. It honestly felt like a chore to get through the last 3 or 4 episode. Definitely the weakest Marvel Netflix series. Sloppy writing, bad casting, terrible action, way too little material to deserve 13 episodes. Frustrating to watch.

My wife and I finished watching the whole series. It's better than the critics are crying about. Some of the fight scenes are weak as they seem slow and sluggish. The ending was also weak because I hate cliff hangers.

Finished this show today. Rating - meh/10.

Terrible combat scenes. Terrible writing. A hugely aweful finale that leaves me with no desire to watch a second season.

These Marvel shows piqued with Daredevil 1 and have been in freefall ever since. I don't have much hope for the ensamble show coming our way.

Also, as a (half) Chinese guy
OT : my kids are half Chinese

Back on topic. I am enjoying Iron fist but this could've been amazing. I was speaking with the stunt/fight coordinator and he said the main actor wouldn't train and they didn't shoot/edit the fights properly.
You can have the most incredible martial arts fight sequence in the world, BUT if shot with bad angles and bad editing (like most of the fights in Iron fist) then it's gonna look terrible.

Why do a lot of Hong Kong or Asian fight scenes in their films look good? Because the action/martial art choreographers over there can call the shots on both camera angles and the edit as well as the fight beats, making the overall sequence look great, you have to have control over all three aspects.
Mainly in the west, the camera guy has their idea, editor has theirs as well, director also and then the stunt coordinator and fight choreographer can also have different ideas, this can mean 5 different ideas on how to shoot and edit which usually makes for a disaster.

There is a few exceptions over here, with some movies letting the stunt/action/fight team having total creative control over the entire sequence. Which makes sense as you ain't gonna get a baker to fix your car...........

Into the badlands any good please? I thought the trailer looked great!!

Yep. It's a fun show with some great fights. You should check it out.
