Is Sony one of the more resillient companies ?

In Console gaming Sony has pulled in the biggest numbers..

What? Nintendo IS the biggest brand in gaming bar none. I doubt there are many gamers (if any at all) that didn't grow up with a Nintendo system, whether that be a NES, Gameboy, SNES, 64, Gamecube, Wii, or DS.. Sometimes you say some rational things despite you're clear bias for Sony in terms of consoles, but this is just silly. There is a reason why the biggest franchises in gaming are Mario and Zelda.

I said consoles and I said nobody has pulled in bigger numbers. In the history of gaming Nobody sold more consoles then the PS2 and the PS1 is in 2nd place. All 3 PS consoles make the top 10 in the history of console sales with Nintendo having 2 consoles.
So yeah Sony is the leader.

Selling more doesn't make them the bigger brand, just makes them the sales leader. I would also say that the NES selling almost 70 million consoles in the 80's is a much bigger achievement than the PS/PS2 sales. A console (PS2) is also almost beat by a handheld(DS) in terms of all time sales.

Nintendo has been the survivor IMO. Sony killed them two gens in a row and they even lost to upstart Microsoft. They stayed strong, made fantastic first party games to keep them relevant and hit major home runs with the Wii and DS.

Sony as a whole is in trouble and only time will tell if they made the right choices with the Quattro.

I don't really respect Nintendo as much (even though I grew up with a Nes and SNES) because when the going gets tough for them, they don't push for 3rd party support like SOny, or don't keep continuing with the same console, they make new ones. How many different handhelds have they bought out in the last 5 years ? ANd they bring out these cheap consoles with a gimmick and then put a big price on them. They don't really push the consoles like Sony and Microsoft.

I'm sure some people like what Nintendo do, but i haven't bought a console from them since the wii, but that was just out of curiosity(played wii sports liked it and then sold it) I wan t nintendo to release a console that's graphically better then Microosft and Sony, but they don't do it. and I doubt they will have support from adult gamers until they do.

Sony is pretty resilent.

The Sony-engineers were instructed by their bosses to shut down their robotic dog-program, Aibo, because it weren't profitable enough.
The media wrote all about it a year or two ago, but at E3 this year, we saw that the Aibo technology has been placed inside Dual Shock 4.

In the last eleven years, Sony has been in a slow death spiral, and has lost so much value, it's net worth is now less than one nineth the value of Samsung Electronics. I don't know how much more "resilience" the company can take.

Maybe this is why they are finally listening to their customers , because THEY HAVE TO. I hope that the PS4 brings Sony a lot of cash, I don't want them to die, I like them specially if they can deliver devices like the PS4 and are giving us what we want.

I just hope though, if they get back to the top, that they learn from this and don't go back to being bossy and listen to their customers more. I really like thier PR people too at Sony like that Jack tretton ( I love listening to him for some reason) and that Japanese guy ( don't mean to be racisit, but can't think of his name) in charge of Sony Japan, they are very layed back people and not cocky.

You're probably thinking on Shuhei Yoshida, the head of WorldWideStudios - and act as Sony customer-support/q&a on twitter - not the one in charge of Sony Japan .

He was on stage at gamescon or E3 ( can't remember ) playing Killzone on alounge chair. he was also the guy that made fun of Xbox1 on how Sony shares games when someone passed him the physical copy of the game.

I wouldn't call it resilience. Sony has simply gotten smart enough now to know not to throw away their billions of hard-earned yen shoving unnecessary technology into these consoles. It would be like telling a gambling addict that he is resilient for getting smart enough to stop throwing his money at the slots.

Sure it does and almost doesn't count nor is it what was comparing as I said console sales.
Still sold less anyway

Exactly Dr.

Those numbers include handheld as well and they all count.

Yeah I'm hurt over Nintendo....me over Nintendo! Cause I just love my Wii U...oh wait.

You cant just select some numbers to claim one is no.1.

Tough times call for tough measures, they have been seeing losses YOY overall as a company and i think only SCEI is the one churning a bit of profit. Restructuring, selling real estate, laying off employees etc...is something I really wouldn't say that they are being 'resilient', they are just doing what business and the need of the hour demands them to do to try keep the business in a good standing. Sony is only a shadow of its 1980s self now, that owes partly due to its bad policy decisions, steep pricing of products, much more increased competition in various sectors etc.

Among the console manufacturers, i'd say nintendo would be the one that has shown to be resilient over the years and have weathered the storm from time to time. The gamecube turned out a failure, but they fought right back with the wii. Now the wii u isnt doing great but i'm sure they'll hang in there tough and make a comeback again.

Interested to see what Nintendo do next. Way too soon to kill off the U which I doubt they are considering anyways but going off the way things look now its not going to have a long life and feels like they will being playing catch up hardware wise from now on.

Same time the usual games could turn things round for them. The 3 we have in the console market now wouldn't work as just 2 for gamers like the Nintendo/Sega days IMO.

People calling Nintendo resillient it will be good to see what they do with the Nintendo Wiiu. I will call them resillient if they can come good with the WiiU and bring it through it's tough start it has had. Lets see how long the WiiU lasts or if they fold it in after a couple of years and make something new.

Lifetime unit sales.
Nintendo 702.34 million units sold
Sony 416.39 million
MS 102.2 million
SEGA 91.1 million

And I can't believe Sega has only sold that many consoles. I used to think Sega was popular once, even though I only ever bought a Dreamcast from Sega, but I enjoyed every day with it until they announced they are stopping it.

Sales =/= Brand. Brand is how marketable the name/product is, how recognizeable it is, how big in popular culture it is. Nintendo has a bigger brand than Sony..that;s just the way it is. Nintendo has been in the industry a LOT longer than Sony, giving them a longer chance to build a massive brand. If you want to talk console name brand, than Playstation would be bigger than Wii and Xbox, but on a company level, Nintendo is a much bigger gaming brand than Sony, hell that's all they really do, Sony as a brand is bigger in TV's and movies than in gaming..

Those are relative numbers, Sega was part of the industry when the gaming userbase wasn't very large, certainly no where as large as today. Look at Nintendo selling almost 70 million consoles during the 80's, I'd venture to say that 70 million was pretty close to the total amount of gamers at the time.

I don't expect the PlayStation brand will disappear. It will just have Samsung, or Apple or Google in front of the name, that's all.

Probably, since it was the only game in town, for much of that time, no opportunistic pun intended.
