It Sure Feels Like Microsoft's New Xbox One Mantra Is 'Be PlayStation'

I finally had time to read the article in full. I disagree with the way he puts it:

"To me, it seems very clear that Microsoft’s new directive going forward is “Be PlayStation.” [....] and now Microsoft is intensely interested in solving the other half of the problem, must-have exclusive software."

That's not "Be Playstation." That's "Be a Good Game Console."

Sony didn't invent the idea of having a strong exclusive lineup. That's been around for as long as consoles have, as a central defining aspect of what a good console should offer -- of why people buy your console rather than a different one. Nintendo has done this forever. So has Sony. Microsoft did it with the 360 and the original Xbox. They did it early in this generation, too.

This is not a Sony idea. It's not about "being Playstation." It's about being a good game console.
Exactly. Sega Dreamcast had arguably the greatest rollout of exclusive games in its short life, yet I can't see any modern company shouting "Let's Be the Sega of their Twilight Years!".... Yeah, it's about being a good game console, indeed.

I don't think it's coping so much as finally coming to the realization that the magical media box route was a complete failure and that everyone wants them to just focus on games. One of the reasons I think the One X has been a huge success is they've focused all that power on improving games and haven't mentioned anything else.

my problem with this is that MS doesn't have a good track record of making great SP games, they tend to take there best SP games (Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable) and make a mess of them and those that are good and deserve further work like Sunset Overdrive, ReCore don't go further because MS didn't make enough money off of them.

The new Gears and Forza's are great imo. I haven't liked a 343 Halo yet though.

The irony being that they both are, in fact, magical media boxes.

The thing is Halo,Gears, Minecraft were all critical and commercial monsters from the outset. Forza critically and only recently significantly commercially successful.

You don't really see many 8.2/10.0 metas that sold meh turn around to 90+ monsters. Most of them get discontinued.

You don't need 3 more attempts to turn it around when you can score a bullseye on your first dart.

Their mantra should be "be Xbox of old". I mean the original Xbox was awesome, it was an extension of the Dreamcast and we all know what the 360 did during its early years in particular. They got caught chasing the casual pie and it burned them. Focus on games, and the success will follow.

You don't even need to go back far to see that being the ultimate media box and pushing gimmicks isn't the way to go. PS3's slogan was It Only Does Everything. Yeah, only does everything including worse online and less games at the time. Sony learned from their mistakes. Now it's time for Microsoft to get it together.

I think there's something very helpful about failure. All three of these companies seem to do better right after they've fallen on their face. After the PS3, we got the PS4. After the Wii U, we got the Switch. After the 2013 reveal, we got a lot of great, value-added services and a fine piece of hardware. If they can get the first-party game problem solved, they will be golden.

You know the gamers' mantra: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Unless you're MS or EA, then you can go f*** yourself.

That's a bit harsh, don't you think?

Have you read a comment section anywhere ever? If anything, I'm underselling it - they'll tell even mid-tier developers to f*** themselves.

I know you're joking, and I know there are reasons to feel persecuted, but I've got to say, I'm tired of hearing the "everyone is against MS" line, over and over. Half the gamers in the US (and roughly a third of them globally) own an Xbox. Are they telling MS to "go f*ck yourself"? No, of course not -- they're avid Xbox fans. There are tens of millions of them. (Can't say the same for EA.) And there are many more people who would like to see them doing better. Again, I know you're joking ... but the "MS is a victim" thing gets tiring. At least to me.

But of course it does...

There are legit insecure fanboys out there however - on both sides - but the Xbox hate is too rampant and too often to be a coincidence. I wish it weren't true but it is. That's genuine.

Is it or do you just take it more to heart when you see it? There are plenty of anti Sony people out there too, doesn't matter of course because Sony does just fine without them.

As I said, I understand there are reasons to feel persecuted and treated unfairly. Believe me, I do. I'm not saying there isn't media bias or bias on gaming forums. I'm just saying that, after listening to the same complaints about being a persecuted over and over for years, it gets tiring. Isn't 4 straight years of complaining about being treated unfairly ... isn't that enough? I get tired of hearing myself complain after 30 minutes.

It feels exaggerated, too. The comment I responded to portrayed everyone as being totally against Xbox. But the Xbox brand has tens of millions of devoted fans. MS got a ton of good press for the Xbox One X. They got a lot of praise for backwards compatibility. They are getting a lot of praise for Game Pass now. But what do I hear? "Everyone hates Xbox." Really?

I guess after listening to it for so long, it just feels whiney to me.

p.s. Of course, this may all just be the result of another hrudey joke that misfired...

I never misfire. Sometime the target just isn't where it was supposed to be.

I'll try to respond later but keep in mind that the joke was tied to the idea of bashing failure and remember how spectacularly MS failed early this gen and how long those failures are being accounted for.

So to counter the whining, you start whining to take things in a new direction? :p

Now, I must get back to my wine-ing.

Wine them, dine them, something about some number... 70? Not quite.

No, there's nothing wrong with complaining. Complaining serves useful purposes. But there's a difference between complaining once and complaining for 4 years, especially when things are going relatively well for you.

I agree it gets tiring, but there is some truth to it. Honestly, I can't stand any kind of whining, even if I'm the one doing it. I always say (to myself, even, when appropriate because the pity train don't discriminate!), shrug it off and get on with life, no matter the hurdle. It's the only truely useful remedy. Especially when it comes to some giant company that has nothing to do with you.

Yes, I know there is some truth to it. I've acknowledged that. I get it. (How could I be a member of an Xbox forum for 4 years without getting it?)

Yeah, that's kind of my reaction, too. I don't like getting stuck in the poor-me (poor us), victim posture. I'll go there sometimes, like we all do, but I get myself out of it pretty quickly, because it feels weak and self-defeating to me. It's not going to go on more than a day or two, much less 4 years. I'd much rather hear from MS guys about the great gaming experiences they are having with their Xbox, rather than another year of the "Everybody is against us" talk.

Anyhow, I've made my point. I don't want to belabor it. I don't expect my words to change anything. I'm just getting it off my chest.

I'm really enjoying my X and haven't touched the Pro in weeks (that will change on Feb 6th).
I don't feel victimized.

I think Microsoft made themselves an easy target for a large part of this generation. I think Spencer gets that. But we'll see.

Xbox for sure has more haters than any other console but they had overwhelming praise for Game Pass and you still had people here talking about the negative people which makes it seem like that wasn't the case. Who cares what some guy on System Wars says?
