Microsoft introduced a video game console that wasn't focused on video games. The company demonstrated repeatedly that it wasn't listening to its most core consumers, and in doing so lost a lot of early momentum.

And now Sony is showing early signs of making those same mistakes.

More than just upsetting fans, Sony's refusal to allow cross-play sparked some major game publishers to speak out. Sony - a company that enjoyed years of good will with gamers following the launch of the PS4 - started looking like the arrogant one.

It was reminiscent of Microsoft's messaging around the launch of the Xbox One, which often felt like Microsoft wasn't listening to its most loyal fans.

Sony hasn't shown any signs of not being focused on games, their first party output is better than it has ever been. I don't get why articles like this get written, yeah cross play wasn't jumped on right away but that's a huge change from how things were done for over a decade. When you are first place you don't follow second place and it took time for them to asses how that would impact their business. Things are going about as good as any console maker could have dreamed for Sony this gen and the only reason MS was even open to this was because they needed to do something drastic, it wouldn't have made any sense for Sony to just do it because MS said so.

This article mentions PSN having more integration with their movie and music business as if that's a bad thing, doing that won't mean the focus is no longer on gaming and that's a silly conclusion to jump to. Sony is an entertainment company so integrating their brands so that they are more accessible makes a lot of sense. That's nothing like having a press conference to announce your console and then talking about fantasy football and $500 million dollar deals with the NFL or how the machine works when you watch tv. Being able to access Sony music and movies would be just an extension of what PSN already does, they have playstation video etc.
