Multiplatform Graphics Discussion [OT]

For all the talk about how underpowered the consoles are in relative terms to modern PCs, the graphics this generation are absolutely incredible.

This is still early cycle, scratching the surface at what is to come. If you go back and look at 360 titles from 2006 and compare to the later stuff it sometimes doesn't look like it is running on the same machine. It is kind of nuts to think of all the improvements still to come from both consoles.

Still crazy to me to see skin that looks that good up close on a character model.

Mass effect characters also looks good up close, even on 360. Its LODs, where either Polygon meshes &/or textures are swap base on distance. The eyes are most impressive if you asked me.

The fact that you can even see his pores up close and all of that is what really catches my eye, it just looks much more natural and really like skin unlike most characters that up close look like plastic or rubber.

Well DC does looks better from these scenes. To be fair, FH2 is a cross gen game, open world & running on weaker hardware. Interested to see the next full (maybe) next gen FH3.

But credit where credit is due.

FH2 isn't running on the same engine on the xbox one as on the 360 so that really had nothing to do with it. Open world and weaker hardware are fair points to bring up though.

Some of those DC photos look ace, theres a whole thread of Horizon photos, both incredible looking games.

Here's a nice horizon pic

The face and her really angular limbs make her look like a blow up doll.

Cross gen limit things like polycounts. Assets have to be share that is comparable between both version otherwise its extra work.
You cannot scale polygon like you can with texture. Which is why games like Dragon age have quite low poly character models (for a next gen game).

The 360 version used the original Forza Horizon engine and was made by sumo digital, FH2 on the X1 was made using Forza 5's engine and was made by playground games. There are things in the Xbox One version that aren't in the 360 version and I doubt they are using the exact same car models etc.

I know they used different engines. Thats not the point. Maybe some parts of car models are modified for next gen, but it technically doesn't make sense to not share most asserts when you making same title. I am saying this for info, no need to break it into details (I can explain more details, but I think you get the point), but being cross gen do hold back full potential of a title in visual department.

If I am making a cross platform game ( I am actually, planning on PC then mobile, but thats another thing), no way am I going to remake most of the asserts, maybe 20% max (otherwise may as well make 2 different games) , whether you have 2 studios or not. Its just from schedule, resource, & revenue points of view impractical.

Anyway, I am not downplay DC looking better, just explaining that FH3 have potential to look better purely from moving full next gen.

so i bought Driveclub and it looks great, sadly having played FH2... DC just feels so last gen, i keep wanting to take shortcuts and..........

question, i've not seen the rain yet. is there a quick way to select it so i can marvel at what appears to be the only standout part of the game?

I'm thinking everyone who is in here boasting about Infamous and DC will suddenly also be pushing The Order. Keep it sony bro.
But it is cool to boast about X1 game graphics right. Keep it MS bro.
See I can do your same boring schtick you seem to be all about lately.

No one said it didn't go both ways, that's obvious. I was responding to a question about what goes down in 3 weeks. Is there a MS exclusive coming out too that I should respond to, because I will to even things out. :)

The Order is great graphically, it looks like some ADHD graphical wizard was locked into a room for the past few years just chipping away at it. It's a shame the actual gameplay and story looks very meh though.

This will also be a chance to see whether a large group of people genuinely hate QTEs or just Xbox exclusives, because it looks to be hard line linear and packed to the gills with them.

Either way, looking forward to the eye-candy.

Nope you just seem to be on the same boring type responses lately and I want to help you out and let you know. I mean I have to be there for some one who has me in their avatar.Ygrin:

I think its a great comparison to Ryse visually, we haven't had a direct comparison yet of a more linear game like these two.

Seemingly nothing's touching The Order to bad its single player only or it be day one.
Great reviews are its only chance.

I personally didn't play much of Gears multiplayer. So if The Order is as fun and lengthy as those games, it will be a purchase for me. We'll see.

yeah, that game really needs a photomode. So does Unity. Hell, let's just make that every game, lol.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-vs-infamous-second-son

"As we noted in the initial performance analysis piece, Second Son utilises a physically-based renderer with a proper energy conservation model in play allowing light to interact with materials in a more natural and realistic way. Energy conservation plays an important role in a physically-based renderer in part by placing limits on the intensity of reflected light based on the value of the incoming light. The specular highlight of an object, for instance, cannot produce more light than the source light. The way sunlight reflects in pools of water or the way car headlights project into the world appear much more realistic than a more traditional model might offer. This approach to lighting combined with a heavy reliance on high-intensity spotlights are precisely what help create the sense of vibrancy present in the game."

"To ensure a high level of quality, Sucker Punch opted not to utilise a full real-time lighting system that tracks the time of day - instead the team concentrated on lighting the city across eight different set times, with the game switching between them according to the story or the mission."

Also, SP has implemented a 30FPS cap option shortly after launch for the user/gamer to enable if they want to. :D

And I say the artists don't know how to make good materials. Like previous posters have mentioned, the buildings look like last gen. The material is flat and don't even remotely mimic PBR compared to AC:U.

Also, from the screens you've shown, you are showing off 2 main things -- reflections and colored particles. Everything else is standard fair IMO. Yes, it's a good looking open world game.. but I still stand by AC:Unity being the best looking one -- and without reflections or colored particles.

Do you know what a photo mode is? you can take 100% pure raw gameplay pics if you choose to, yes you can change the depth of field if you'd like or put a filter on it etc but it's not forced. I personally like photo modes because you can change the camera angles as well as zooming in or out but adding effects isn't something that's done unless the person chooses to and even then it's limited. I will agree that think taking pics of cut scenes is cheating as it isn't always representative of what the game truly looks like.

I'll dabble with photomode in ISS today and see if there is any assets that change when you go to it.

Photomode in DC can be used to show screenshots not representative of the actual gameplay. Why? Because it's been proven that the assets switch when you go to it. I believe the camera is locked in DC to mask framerate issues if it wasn't. There is a photomode in Assetto Corsa but I can move the camera anywhere I want by selecting F5 -- while I'm actually racing and maintain 60fps.

Consoles are tapped out ms wise. I don't see much better than what you are seeing tech-wise (unless the technique is faster and closer to brute force methods). Artistic quality will probably be a constant since that all depends on artist.

How about some Forza vs. DC? :p

Should be fair since both have photomodes enabled. Should make for some great shots.

Here are some DC photomode:

i think those are deceptive. I just played DC at Best Buy (it was the full version, though I didn't see any weather unfortunately). There are some darn ugly things going on in DC that I didn't expect. I thought the lighting was great (looks a lot like the lighting in AC Unity), but I didn't come away terribly impressed with the visuals as I was expecting. It was doing some nice things, but I can't bring myself to call it the best looking racer anymore.

I found it interesting that they had Forza 5 running (demo Prague level), and even though I think DC has a better lighting solution as well as nicer foliage, I found myself being more impressed with F5. I kept going back and forth( probably to some raised eyebrows from the employees) and was honestly shocked that I preferred Forza's visuals.
