Multiplatform Graphics Discussion [OT]

Consoles are tapped out ms wise. I don't see much better than what you are seeing tech-wise (unless the technique is faster and closer to brute force methods). Artistic quality will probably be a constant since that all depends on artist.

I don't agree with this at all. The graphics always improve over the generation as devs gain better knowledge and find more efficient ways to do things.

i think those are deceptive. I just played DC at Best Buy (it was the full version, though I didn't see any weather unfortunately). There are some darn ugly things going on in DC that I didn't expect. I thought the lighting was great (looks a lot like the lighting in AC Unity), but I didn't come away terribly impressed with the visuals as I was expecting. It was doing some nice things, but I can't bring myself to call it the best looking racer anymore.

I found it interesting that they had Forza 5 running (demo Prague level), and even though I think DC has a better lighting solution as well as nicer foliage, I found myself being more impressed with F5. I kept going back and forth( probably to some raised eyebrows from the employees) and was honestly shocked that I preferred Forza's visuals.

Agreed here. The PS4 gamers are convinced that the game is the best looking racer out there.. but I feel like it's only because it's on the PS4 and an exclusive. Sure the weather affects and lighting are definitely top notch, but the textures, materials, and level of details leave a LOT to be desired.

The graphics improve last gen because we had black boxes -- i.e. developers couldn't figure out how to take full advantage of the chips. The consoles this generation are basically low-mid PCs in hardware (i.e. no black boxes) and have already proven to be limited @ 1080p/30fps and much of the features in the graphics API (SSR, GI, AA, SSAO, etc..) have already been implemented one way or another.

If you are expecting to see FF:Agnus, or Infiltrator playing in actual gameplay by the end of this generation, you will be disappointed.

And yes, while I agree they will find more efficient ways to do things, I'm not convinced we'll see more bandwidth used to raise framerates -- and even then, the game would look on par with what we see now, just run faster. We may see more features in a game at one time as opposed to now where you only see real-time GI in Alien, but no screen-space reflections, volume lighting, superior AA, etc..but I don't imagine ALL those features being in a game at one time by end of life cycle. I could be wrong though.. we'll see.

.

I agree with this part. We will see improvements here and there, but the problem is there is no "discovery" jump like there was like ps3 for example, consoles are basically PCs so developers start off with a good base already.

Still crazy to me to see skin that looks that good up close on a character model.

Very nice shots!

The slight difference between 1080p and 900p is very noticeable here. Infamous looks so crisp and clear while Unity has a slight blur smear to it and it seems Infamous: SS looks better than Unity at least on the PS4. PC is a different matter since we all know maxed out settings on PC will kill everything else on console but that's also why they cost significantly more too.

As years go by games will come out that look better then anything out now.
These consoles are based off PC parts and always have been to a extent but offer custom features, are in a set environment and have devs with big budgets behind them that makes the PC only cry.

The standard for years to come will be set on these consoles while the PC follows the leaders.

While PC trolls are busy dissecting console games visuals..console games will be busy winning awards for visuals.
He isn't a Troll. He is a guy that understands 3d graphics. Just because what he says doesn't jive with you view of things doesn't make him a troll.

Let's take you up on that bet. We are now in Year 2 of the next-gen consoles. There is only ONE game out of all the ones we've seen that stands out to be superior to last year's gem.. The Order 1886. And even that isn't looking significantly better than Ryse. All the other games coming out at year's end from what we've seen don't even compare to Order graphically.

Thanks for the compliment on the shots :) as far as the blur I wonder if that's the 900p or just the AA they use or maybe something else? BF4 is 900p and it looks cleaner than unity. Also I have to laugh at a comment I read from VFX that the environments look last gen, they aren't flat they are just sharp and clean, the bricks look like bricks etc.

Current as in here on out and there is more then just The Order...I will give just one example and that's Quantum Break.

The Order is a 1st gen/1st offering game as the devs lack of experience with the PS4 the Letterboxing was a design choice as said by the devs to give a more cinematic look as we showed you already.

Despite you liking Val's post that I'm a console troll.. I'll comment here that I agree with you on Unity. Unity's NPCs have some kind of blur to them that doesn't make it crisp at all. It's a fault I can identify with even on the PC at high resolutions. When I compare Unity's characters with Watch Dog's NPCs.. they are more crisp in WD. So I get what you mean. It's the textures used. They aren't as high res as the buildings and environments and makes them look out of place.

Also I have to laugh at a comment I read from VFX that the environments look last gen, they aren't flat they are just sharp and clean, the bricks look like bricks etc.

The sharp and clean look isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how a brick responds to light. Most bricks are completely diffuse and therefore should scatter light evenly in all directions. Some bricks have a coat of wax on them for a specular appearance but that's not really what I'm getting at. If you look at the shot:

You see 3 different types of materials. 2 different kinds of bricks, window seals, and the windows. The window seals aren't made of concrete and yet they respond to the light the exact same as the bricks do. If the game utilized PBR here (not saying they didn't for other assets), you'd tell the difference.

In Unity:

The wall is reflecting light differently than the drapes, or the picture frames, or the vase, or the floor, table, or the cloth on the couch. This is good use of PBR.

LOL @ cherry picked comparison shots.
This man is on a mission.
If this wasn't a Xbox majority site you would be banned for the trolling.
Just saying

But Quantum Break doesn't look better than Order IMO (which is coming out later). I don't get your point. If devs are getting better and better at the hardware from year to year, we should see breakthroughs near the end of each year right? The Order, from what we've seen so far, looks to be a notch better than most games coming out in 2015. Surely we should see some game in the Fall looking better than Order?

I would be banned eh? You are probably right.. but not for trolling. For speaking the truth.

Its very comparable and is in the looks better then upcoming PC exclusives list.

See here negative to the PS4 threads stay open.
When/if you are brave enough to start hanging in Xbox One games threads downplaying Xbox One games as they start to get praise/or awards for visuals you should start to feel the heat.

Are you indicating that this website is biased towards it's platform of choice and that constructive criticism isn't allowed? I don't believe that. This isn't NeoGAF.

Its common knowledge and neogaf is a true multiplatform forum that just happens to favor the bigger sellers as ANY popular multi-format site does and that would be the PC/PS.
