Yoshinori Ono Details Deep Down, Praises PS4, Talks About 60 FPS, Vita Remote Play and DualShock 4.

Today Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia released an interview with legendary Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono, in which he shared quite a lot more details about the upcoming PS4 exclusive Deep Down, explained the themes of the game and the story, and praised the PS4 hardware specs, also giving some details on how the DualShock 4 and the remote play feature with the PS Vita will be used.

Below you can read a summary of Ono-san’s answers:

  • The game is set in New York, year 2094. The members of a group called “Ravens” (the players) have the special ability to travel back in time by reading the memory of items and listening to the voice of the past. They can travel to the past by using the information they read from the items.
  • The game is called a “Reading RPG” for two reasons: first because of the idea of “reading memories” mentioned above, and then because of the theme of “reading emotions” The emotional theme comes from the fact that various dungeons correspond to different emotions. For instance by touching a statue and reading its emotions one can feel the grudges of a vicious mind that will then characterize the resulting dungeon.
  • The theme of “knowing the truth of the past” is also present, and that’s the Ravens’ purpose.
  • Capcom wanted to make an online only game to do something different from the past experiences of Monster Hunter and Dragon’s Dogma, in order to enjoy the online gameplay without restriction, on a platform (the PS4) that has an inseparable relationship with online gaming.
  • By playing with friends one can exchange the information gathered from dungeons and further the investigation of the mystery behind Deep Down.
  • It’s still possible to play solo, and gamers should begin like that in order to get familiar with the game, then they should challenge the dungeons alongside other Ravens.
  • Ono-san wants to reduce the barriers between players and online gameplay, in order to reassure those that are hostile to the idea of always online games.
  • Since players are supposed to play the game for a long time, like most online games, large updates have already been scheduled, and they will happen on a regular basis. Capcom will continue to develop the game after release in order to let players feel the changes regularly.
  • There will be a beta after the release of the PS4, and Ono-san wants it to begin as soon as possible.
  • Sony has created an easy development environment for the PS4, and that’s a welcome change.
  • The quality showcased in the PlayStation Meeting in February was reached considerably quickly, and things like 60 frames per seconds are relatively easy to achieve.
  • The automatic generation of dungeons is achieved thanks to the power of the PS4. It’s not completely random, but automatically generated according to certain parameters. Since the PS4 has specs similar to a PC, dungeons can be generated like this thanks to its memory capacity and computing speed.
  • The representation of environments is close to photo realistic, and elements like degradation of weapon and armor will also be displayed graphically. The PS4 is able to calculate the accumulation of mold, dirt and rust on equipment and display it on the textures, giving you the sensation that those items really exist in the world.
  • The light bar on the DualShock 4 will represent the emotions of the dungeon being played. When a Raven listens to the voice of the past, it will come from the speaker on the controller, in order to increase immersion. The touchpad will also be used for tactile features.
  • Remote play with PS Vita will be fully supported in order to play the game more comfortably. The team is also thinking on how to use smartphone and tablets.
Quite interesting, isn’t it? The more I hear about Deep Down the more I’m interested, in contrast with my rather mild initial reaction. Below you can check out the original video, which is of course in Japanese.

In other words, they are copying Assassin Creed in a way just with online multiplayer.

Sounds promising! Hopefully it'll be good enough to truly give Souls a run for its money. The more of these types of games the better. I'm actually incredibly happy to see how influential the Souls games have become in the industry... a sign of great things to come me hopes...

It seems like a evolution of Dragons Dogma and Monster Hunter to me.

The procedurally generated dungeons we've seen before, that makes the game much more interesting to play.
Also interesting to see how monsters were changing, i.e. if you enter a dungeon during winter some of the creatures will have thicker fur.
I wonder if this is only graphically, or if the gameplay will change aswell, fur could potentially catch on fire more easily, and should protect the creatures from ice-spells better. :-/

Also wonder how much interactive objects, like modeling damage on weapons they will manage to get with 60FPS. :-/

I knew the first video wasn't gameplay. Judging from those screenshots, the game doesn't look good. Next Generation is looking more like current generation 2.0 everyday.

I think the main-dude for Dragon's Dogma is going to announce a new Capcom game at TGS.
Most people think it's a fighter tough, the team who made Dragon Dogma is making this game, I think.

Depending on what fighter he's announcing I might be okay...still I'd rather have Itsuno make another Dragon's Dogma, loved that game.

I can't believe some people swore up and down that the demo first shown was gameplay footage.

I especially loved the part where they called people who worked at the gametrailers "analyst".

I wish theseekar was here just to rub this in his face.

Good
- 60 fps is great
- Seems like a D&D dungeon hack game
- Semi random dungeons is always a good idea

Bad
- Online only
- Game doesn't come close to looking like that first trailer early in the year
- The whole "The story is set in future NY 2094, but the game makes you go to fantasy world" seems like A) an AC knock-off and B) Lame. Should have just made this a focused D&D style game with no futurama spin story

It's a online game, but you can play solo, here is a excerpt from a Famitsu interview:

—Is your connection to other players important?

For those players who feel that online gaming is awkward, Deep Down can also be enjoyed by oneself. First, try playing solo, then when you become accustomed to it, try challenging dungeons together with other Ravens.

—Will players who have their guards up about online gaming be able to enjoy Deep Down?

I can’t say anything concrete yet, but we do want to lower barriers to play as much as possible. If anyone reading this knows any of my other titles they may have thought, ‘Oh hey! When did this become an online game?’ This is the kinda of stage we wish to set with Deep Down.

First Crapcom showed Deep Down and the game had a dragon that was like this:

Now Crapcom presents Deep Downgrade and the dragon look like this:

The gameplay systems sound fantastic. I am glad Ono has been able to work on a new title and not just slave away at Street Fighter for CAPCOM.

Whoa, a lot of negativity in this thread. Sometimes I wonder if certain people on gaming forums even like videogames at all, lol. Not sure what some of you guys are smokin'... Deep Down looks and sounds like it's going to be great to me :)

It's 60fps but the question is...at what resolution? (I'm assuming 720p)

Screenshots yesterday were 720p, I don't know if it is for demo-purpose, or if that is what they are targetting - tiltle is probably not coming until system launches in Japan.
They've allways said they're gonna have 60 fps, but never mentioned what resolution. So I think FPS is most important to developers, even tough I'd much rather have 1080p@30 fps tough, than 720p@60 fps. :p Framerate not that important to me, as long as it's stable. :-/

this game look pretty but the game play looks boring

I thought that initially as well, but there were a few people playing last night in the stream, and the ones that could play, made it seem pretty damn good. It reminded me a bit of Dark Souls in that sense. However, pull that damn camera back.
