Official Thread New PS4 Owners Thread

I'm loving the Spotify app. MS is really missing out on this.

Now playing - Do It Clean - Echo and the Bunnymen :)

Yeah I wish he would put his stuff and more Porcupine Tree on spotify.

Man, these controller batteries do not last. The batteries go out long before my thumbs do. Ironically, the usb cable from my X1 elite controller works great to play and charge. Feels kind of dirty though. :hehe:

I take it people would recommend the Uncharted collection? Best Buy has it for $20 this week.

Oh yeah. At least if you enjoy action adventure games like that. Just beware some of the mechanics in the first game are old. I enjoyed the first game a lot myself, but other people have gripes.

I'll have to pick up a copy myself. $20 is a nice deal.

I heard that about the first game. I figure I'll give it a try. For that price it is basically a no-brainer. Even if I skip the 1st one that's no big deal.

Another question - has anyone run into heat issues with the PS4? Summer is coming and thanks to El Nino is probably going to be extra hot.

Does anyone have a general idea on how hot is "too hot" to play?

Don't you have air conditioning?

I haven't had any heat issues with the PS4, and I haven't heard of any real concerns about that. Just don't wrap it in a blanket, and you should be okay.

I have the wrong ductwork for a/c. I have one room that has a portable in it, but it tends to blow circuit breakers a lot.

I keep my gaming setup in the basement so it stays somewhat cool. It can still get very hot in my house though if the summer is long and hot. Actually where I am (Buffalo, NY) doesn't get super hot, it just doesn't cool down at night... at all. So the highs might be mid-80s, but the lows overnight only hit mid-70s so nothing cools down. Basically my house sits at a balmy 80-82 most of the time if we get a bad summer. Run warm electronics in a room for more than an hour and that goes up and up.

I just noticed that the back of my PS4 is a little warm to the touch. Not bad, but noticeable. I always keep the airflow going and don't use an entertainment center. I usually get a fan to blow the hot air coming out the back too which helps.

Then September comes and it snows like crazy :)

Screw you Best Buy :txbmad:

They put the Nathan Drake collection on sale for $20, then pull it off the shelves of every store within 75 miles of me.

Then they try and sell me a used copy for $30. I could have asked them to give it to me, but why bother?

My old house stays extremely hot in the summer (82-86F) and I've never had any issue with my launch system. I also have it sitting directly under a 50" plasma that puts out temps of 105+ degrees adding to the temperature problem, but it still doesn't cause any issue.

Good to know, thanks. If it gets much hotter than low 80s then I am not sitting playing games anyway.

Well I am now the owner of the Uncharted collection. It magically appeared in a Best Buy near my house. Can't wait to try it out (didn't have time thanks to a large patch).

My house is about 70 degrees year round. I never notice my PS4 get hot, but the fan sure does like to fly. If you hear your fan, you know it's cooling!

Mine is definitely warm in back. Nothing like the old launch 360s but warm. This is obviously under normal temps and plenty of ventilation.

Probably the goofy slant they put in the back that makes it impossible to plug anything in the back without moving it.

If its warm in the back it means the cooling fans are working.

Oh, man, that sucks. I love air conditioning. I think it's the best invention ever, next to maybe the wheel. I went a few days without a/c in the summer a decade ago -- I live in the deep south, mind you -- and life didn't seem worth living. Then I got a/c back, and I thought, "God bless the person who invented air conditioning."

Yeah you need it down there. Where I am some summers we barely have 10-20 days where it is really hot. Of course if it gets bad we can have 3+ months of non a/c hell. It just doesn't make sense to spend all the extra money to get a/c. I have baseboard heat so it would be expensive. Houses are also designed to stay warm instead of having ventilation. Should be fun. I'll snap a few pictures of my thermostats topping 90 if it happens.

Agreed. I too live in the south. A/C and indoor plumbing are the best inventions EVER for people that live down here.

Agreed! We just got indoor plumbing last year, and it's great.

well the PS4 like any good electronic should shutdown before it over heats and kills itself. Id' say all the game consoles have that built into them.

Well, I will put them both to the test this summer! That's if the weather geeks are right about this year.

This is going some place interesting.

Thinking of getting uncharted 4. Everyone acts like it's the second coming so I guess I should see what the fuss is about. Narrative be damned, I don't have the time today to play through 1 - 3.

You could always youtube the story for the first 3

What I've heard so far is nathan drake is loveable rogue, sully is friend, there was a lady friend in the first game, she goes away for the second, comes back for 3, no one cares about her anymore. Treasure is found intermittently throughout the series, an old blonde lady makes life hard in one of the games, suddenly nathan drake has a brother, time skip, here we are.

I mean I basically just wrote the entire series.
Or something

Tommygun, the storyline for UC isn't deep like an RPG but I do feel the characters are well-developed enough for you to "care" about them having just played through the first 3 in the past few months. Whereas in TR you don't feel much empathy, interest, or lasting impressions for anyone other than Lara...in Unchartered I got to "know" all the characters through their dialog and actions.

You certainly don't have to play through the first 3 UC's to follow along with the story but I would personally highly recommend getting to know the characters if you have the time. UC4 appears to be a masterpiece and it enriches the experience to know the cast. I bet anyone who does play UC4 as their first will want to go back anyways and it's much easier to move forward than go backward. I actually enjoyed seeing how the gameplay and graphics evolved in timeline fashion.

Here's two GI editors discussing that topic:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...f-the-series-before-you-play-uncharted-4.aspx

Here's one excerpt that caught me (and it echoes what Oblong said, which I agree with):

"Andrew Reiner: I know it will cost a bit more, but I think you owe it to yourself to try playing the first game before jumping into the final one. You said you didn’t care about the characters that much in the first three games [he's talking to the other editor], but I did. I think that’s the big difference here. I bonded with them. You didn’t."

Later, he says, "Uncharted is simple in storytelling scope, but a lot of it falls upon developing the characters. Naughty Dog has done a tremendous job of doing that throughout the years. Just think about how much that means to you in other stories you’ve enjoyed before diving into Uncharted 4."

I think it might come down to that. Some people will enjoy and connect with the characters and story of this series. For them, it's best to play the games in sequence. Other people will not care that much about those aspects -- maybe they just don't connect to the characters or story here, or maybe they are all about gameplay not character/story. It makes perfect sense for those people to start with Uncharted 4, rather than going back and playing the earlier games first.

The other editor (JG) has a good point, too, though: " I think it would just be a bummer for someone to start up Uncharted 1 or 2, find the games haven’t aged well, and then just not ever play 4 because, holy crap, 4 is fantastic."

They mention a moment in Uncharted 4 that will be "just time filler" if you haven't played the earlier games but will trigger lots of memories for those who have played them.

Personally, I like the characters and storytelling in this series enough to want to go back and play through the entire Uncharted Collection again, before moving on to #4. Characters and story are a big part of what make this series great, imo. But I know replaying everything would take me too long, so I'll probably just go ahead and play 4, then circle back later and replay the whole series.

Wow, you'd have thought I read that Game Informer article before I posted but maybe it just validates an overall opinion shared by many. I didn't set out to "care" about the characters playing through the remake for the first time in a 2 month stretch, I couldn't help it the way Naughty Dog developed the game. For me, to miss that part of the tale of Nathan Drake and his cohorts would be like those who's first Star Wars moview was Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Great movie in it's own right but how much more do get out of it from having at least seen the original trilogy?

The 1-3 remastered collection is $20 US at Best Buy.

Ok, another question (not heat related).

Rainbow Six had a big patch yesterday morning. I knew it was coming and wanted it downloaded for when I got home from work. So I left my PS4 in "rest mode" or whatever and it is set to leave the internet on. However I got home and no patch. Is there something else I need to do to get patches automatically, or is it just hit or miss like on X1 (some games on X1 just never update automatically while others do).

I was pumped to play the new map, only to find that I needed to download a 4gb patch.
