Official Thread New PS4 Owners Thread

A poll on Resetera had God of War and Horizon roughly tied for #1, with Horizon slightly ahead, fwiw. Uncharted was way back in third. Detroit is a looker, too, but it hadn't been released at the time of the poll, so it didn't get many votes.

https://www.resetera.com/threads/god-of-war-or-horizon-for-best-pro-graphics.43138/

Taking all things into account if it were based purely on graphics I'd go with Horizon as well but just barely, it's an open world game and still looks incredible. God of War looks insanely good and I think Kratos is one of the best looking character models I've ever seen but the average looking water and fire along with the low quality depth of field effect stand out as negatives because everything else looks so good.

God of war and Detroit probably later. Plenty to keep me busy until spider-man.

Horizon is my favorite ps4 game so far. Infamous and Rachet were fine but not making me feel the purchase is worth it. Horizon is a AAA game and really fun. Only knock for me is movement around environment can be rough and awkward.

Until Dawn requires you to stumble through a tutorial with some of the worse frame drops I have seen...but it has stabilized after tutorial. I am enjoying it.

Have not tried Bloodborn yet. Sure I will enjoy it.

I will give Playstation mad props for having plenty of my type of games (adventure and single player focused) as exclusives. I love telltale games but like variety and until dawn, beyond two souls, heavy rain, and Detroit all look great and I will be enjoying them all this summer. I love assassin's creed and was immediately sucked into horizon and it's world and combat.

Yes I am using boost mode.

I recently picked up a PS4 Pro and I must say I'm very surprised with the quality of Graphics I loaded up a Horizon and Ratchet & Clank and my jaw dropped.

I recently beat god of war and now I'm playing Spider-Man and at the times I find myself just lost looking at my television screen in disbelief for the just how good these games look.

I honestly can't see myself going back to PC gaming ever!

Nice. Glad you're enjoying it. They squeezed some impressive graphics out of it, I agree.

Being a PC gamer and also having a PS4 pro. It makes me bemoan the fact that there really aren't any developers exclusive to the PC sphere that can rival Naughty Dog in animation and Sony Santa Monica in visuals.

PC has the resolution and raw pixel counts but all is void when animation is still stuck in the early 2000s.

Congrats to the new ps4 owners, it really is a great console and one of my all time favorites. Don't forget to check out the PSVR thread, it's like a console within a console with a good amount of exclusives. Especially if you have a Pro you get additional benefits.

If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to PM me or just drop them in PSVR thread. VR is a whole new way of gaming and can be quite daunting at first, but extremely rewarding and immersive.

Hi, I'm Jay. Mainly been a PC gamer with switch stuff sprinkled in. Have a PS4 pro/RDR2 bundle on the way next week. I also got a small 4K TV for the desk and a nice steel series headset that are ready to go. I installed a PS4 pro wall mount behind my TV to get rid of desk clutter from wires and have an empty samsung SSD to replace the factory PS4 HDD. Horizon zero dawn is sitting here unwrapped as well...just waiting for my PS4 to get here. :( Between RDR2, horizon zero dawn, that should give me enough gameplay before I get god of war. Super excited!

Yeah I am done with PC gaming way to many issues.
(for now at least)

X/Pro are more suitable for todays HDR/Atmos gamer.

Helped my brother get a new PS4 pro, he traded in his launch fat PS4 and I used some of my game stop rewards points (had over 200K) and got him 100 dollars off the pro and he got 175 trade for the old scratched and dusty PS4. He now has a RDR 2 Pro bundle and he is very happy, I scored some serious brother points on this one.

Just picked up a PS4 slim at Target BF deal (ordered on Sunday with ship to store and will pick up tomorrow as I'm out of town for TG). Got Spider-Man bundle for $199 and then ordered the following in Sony's BF sale:
  • Last of Us Remastered - $5.99
  • Horizon Complete - $14.99
  • God of War - $21.99
So this is for first party games. Bought in as finally had a great price with a pack-in I really wanted. Debating on getting PSN as Sony FP really doesn't do much online play so the benefit is the 2 games per month...not sure there.

That'll keep you busy. Good haul.

Ok, after a few days with the new console and some observations (haven't tried Last of Us or GoW yet). Also, while I've played PS4 briefly at a friends house, I haven't really messed around with PS since 2009 when I sold my PS3.
  • Spider-Man is really good. It's basically a UBI open world game (many similarities) done REALLY REALLY well...and it's Spider-Man. The city traversal feels great and the costumes are sweet.
  • Horizon is good. While I find the graphics to be very good, there's also something odd about them...might be how "soft" they look...very oil painty. It's definitely pretty and interesting though but probably won't get too far into until I finish Spidey.
  • Console interface is clean (much better that that cross media crap on PS3) but still kind of not intuitive IMO. Some head scratchers about where certain features are located.
  • Controller is definitely an improvement over PS3 but still not my fav due to thumbstick placement...I do like that it's wider and the grips are improved over DS3.
  • I have an HDR10 TV (which is detected fine by my Xbox One X and S) but for some reason the PS4 says HDR not detected. I haven't really had time to troubleshoot it yet though (could be the HDMI I plugged into doesn't support HDR).
  • Download speeds so far have looked up to par with Xbox (HZD 47 GB downloaded in around 15-20 min on my 1 Gbit line; last gen PSN download speeds were terrible)
  • Haven't played online yet but planning to check out Fortnite at least.
So, overall, very happy with the purchase so far considering the price and pack-in. Still on the fence with PS Plus just because I already have XBL and all my friends play there. Have until the end of the day to buy it at $40.

So, any other suggesetions for PS exclusive games? My list currently includes:
  • Bloodborne
  • Uncharted Collection
  • Uncharted 4
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Shadow of the Colossus

Thanks!

Yakuza 0. It will only appeal to a minority of players, but if you're in that minority, it's a real find.

God of War, of course, although I assume you're already considering that.

Until Dawn is also a great little game. Available cheap.

TLOU remastered, if you haven't played that yet.

Thanks. I have GoW and TLOU remastered just haven't fired them up yet :). I've heard good things about Until Dawn and will also check out the Yakuza games. Is that Yakuza game that's free right now on PS Plus any good?

I think that's Yakuza Kiwami. It's a remake of the first game. It'll give you a taste of Yakuza, but it's the very first game (with a visual remake), so it's got all the limitations that come with that. It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as Yakuza 0, which was made just a couple years ago and designed to be played before Yakuza Kiwami (0 is a prequel to everything).

I know it doesn't get a lot of love, but The Last Guardian is worthy of your list. I loved it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try and pick it up on the cheap on one of the sales....speaking of, does Sony do weekly sales like Microsoft or are they more targeted to specific events (i.e. Black Friday, Christmas, Summer, etc.)? I hear of "flash sales" but assume they are somewhat random by the name...

Yes, get it on the cheap if you can. I found it worth $60, but the price has to be getting down there. If you can get over the controls, it will be a good game.

Their sales seem to be more or less random. However, they are also pretty frequent.

PSN has weekly sales, holiday sales and the flash sales are generally on the last weekend of each month.

Thanks for that info. Is there a good source for this sale info? I'm following @Playstation on twitter but haven't seen any tweets about sales this week (though BF/CyberMonday may have blown up the usual sales cadence). For Xbox, I follow Major Nelson who posts the weekly sales on Monday nights and of course all of the "other" sales and events. Thanks again for all of the help folks.

There's a good place to find the weekly deals and the site also usually post threads when there's a flash sale.

They sometimes put sales up here as well: https://blog.us.playstation.com/

If you are in to digital, you can add games you're interested in to your PS store wishlist. Then, you just click on your list and can check game prices. I've had God of War in my list for ages. Then this holiday I see it for $21.99 digitally and I grabbed it. You can even check your wishlist on your phone if you install the app.

Things like IGN Deals are great for all sorts of deals physical and digital. They have an e-mail and twitter account so you can pick how you follow them.

There's a nice flash sale this weekend if you don't know yet...

Where are my newly minted PS4 owners at? I posted in the God of War thread already, and got some nice starter recommendations from Andy, but I'm looking to take advantage of the PSN sales going on and would appreciate recommendations from any and all. I got the Spiderman BF PS4 bundle, and have purchased GOW3 HD, GOW and TLOU already. I dont think I'll subscribe to PS+ for now (can I play online multiplayer without it? Or is it like XBL?). I'm looking for primarily offline experiences. Thanks!
