NiOh

Beat the first mission. Tried the second LOL rip... haven't tried the twilight mission but think I'm out of time soon anyways. Got my two DLC stuff so good enough.

I tried the demo and loved the combat. It was nice and smooth and seems to have quite a bit of depth to it with the different weapon stances. But like the games this seems to imitate its death penalties are really harsh. I don’t get enjoyment out of replaying the same thing over and over making slight incremental progress along the way. I know what you’re thinking “this guy played a ton of The Division” so how can he have a problem with replaying content? Its because in The Division there was someone there to revive me and the game had checkpoints.

Seriously, why not add a mode with checkpoints at the save shrines. I know, that’s for wussies and I freely admit to being one so give me a more casual mode. I guess that wouldn’t work either since it would diminish the overall game. I’m just bummed that there is no middle ground for hack n’ slash action/adventure games. Its either super easy, no depth Dynasty Warriors or super hard bang your head against the wall Souls/Born and now Nioh.

I saw a youtuber (He's pretty good) shows off the combo mechanic and I told myself I gotta try the demo out this weekend. Glad that I did because I really liked the game play. Definitely on my watch list to buy this year.

Nier Autamata? The gameplay has a tone of depth and is fairly difficult.

Well you can find more shrines through out the level, although in some cases you have to beat a mini boss to get it. The one towards the end of the level though you don't have to. But those shrines should serve as a check point.

Yea saw that on Reddit. Just crazy what he could do. I felt like I had a pretty good handle on the combat but this is just over the top. Not sure what his level is though/skill unlocks so I'm sure that helps a bit, but this definitely makes it look closer to Ninja Gaiden.

Nier looks pretty good. But I want play this without the cruel death penalties. I purchased Bloodborne and loved it initially. But having to restart from the beginning each time I died was so demoralizing. It left me feeling so deflated to think about having to trek back from the start.

That mechanic is just frustrating to me. I guess it goes back to when games had no checkpoints but we've progressed since then. Another thing with these types of games is I need to connect 12 strikes to kill the enemy but he only needs 4, da fck. :(

You don't have to go all the way back to the beginning though if you find more shrines. Yea the 12 vs 4 thing is kind of bs. At least in the case of Ogress or whatever her name was I just super leveled my character and then kicked her ass. Now that other guy... holy s*** are you screwed. Yea that's probably my biggest issue with games like this. It's one thing to be hard, it's another to have to focus for 10-15 minutes at a time slowly putting a dent in an enemy, only to screw up once and be dead.

I actually played all of the games its been compared 2.
I kinda like Nioh but it doesn't come close to the depth of the Souls games.
Lets see how it compares with the critics/review scores next week.

Me too that's how I know your lying... Team Ninja evolved the Souls Borne formula with more depth and strategy. lol Don't hate...

Huh what am lying about?

Lie #1 "Its more arcadey you literately walk fight collect powerups/items walk and fight collect powerups/items.
Its like a 3rd person slower paced diablo 3" .

Lie #2 "I kinda like Nioh but it doesn't come close to the depth of the Souls games."

(Hey I want it 2 be good)
Like I said...I can't wait to see the reviews/comparisons. :)

Thats's all fine and dandy but you were lying. lol

No one here agrees with you. Infact the qaulities of Ni-Oh is that it has more depth than Soul Borne. Soul Borne beats Ni-Oh in overall polish but it's inferior to Ni-Oh in depth.

Seriously thinking about taking a day off for this, which I haven't done for a game since like Forza 3 or something. Would probably be Wednesday since Best Buy only had shipping option so game wouldn't get here until late Tuesday anyways. That way I can game into the wee hours of the morning.

When I find one person who actually completed the Souls games AND Bloodborne plus played Nioh in this thread besides myself. I will gladly take notice of what there findings are.
Hey like I said already don't worry reviews are coming and comparisons will be made.

Realistically you can't explain how Souls Borne is way more complex. Now your making up stipulations to avoid discussion because you know it's BS. LOL Do we hafto beat EVERY DW's game to know it's shallow compared to Ninja Gaiden and DMC series? No..

Valliance you are kool peoples but I don't trust you on this subject. lol

Nioh isn't a masterpiece then. It's not quite fresh or original enough to be. But it is a return to form for Team Ninja, a studio many feel had lost its way after the departure of its founder Tomonobu Itagaki in 2008. Nioh's loot-heavy hack and slash doesn't fire on all cylinders - though to be fair its aims seem more singular than that of its competitors - but it's a refreshing reminder of just how thrilling a solid Team Ninja combat encounter can be. Primarily single-player games are on the decline right now, but Nioh is a strong argument for the merits of this withering form.

Game Informer [9/10]

Nioh will break you down (and note this clearly, this is an uncompromising game that does not mind crushing your dreams) before it lifts you up, but you soon crave the thrill of mastering a new weapon or toppling a titanic boss. Endless optimization and customization, engaging encounters, and unparalleled combat by yourself or with a friend make Nioh an excellent choice for your next dark action/RPG.

UsGamer [4/5]

Nioh is Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja taking a more measured approach to what they do best, and is a surprisingly feature-heavy and battle-focused heir to the Soulsborne method. But it ultimately stands on its own, and is a worthy addition to any Action RPG library.

Push Square [8/10]

Nioh is about as approachable as a game of this ilk can be, and while that may offend the hardcore sensibilities of some Souls fans, it's a title that will likely appeal to many players who want a gameplay challenge but are turned off by the obtuse nature of Dark Souls' storytelling and the murky explanations of its mechanics. The experience is marred by some unfortunate difficulty spikes and lacklustre bosses, but the rich loot, levelling systems, and fast, often thrilling combat do more than enough to justify Nioh as a worthy contemporary to From Software's efforts – and an impressive return to form for Team Ninja.

Destructoid [9/10]

With its emphasis on challenging combat and light storytelling elements that are at times bordering on parody (in a good way), Nioh feels like a true successor to the Ninja Gaiden series and fills a nice void that Souls left behind. Did Team Ninja ever leave? Whatever the case might be, it's back.

IGN [in progress 9/10]

Attack of the Fanboy [4.5/5]

Team Ninja took their time to ensure that Nioh was as good as it could possibly be, and that time wasn't wasted. The finished product is a fantastic action RPG that may borrow a lot from the Souls series, but nevertheless adds plenty of great twists to the formula to allow it to stand proudly on its own.

More to come.

Destructoid is about the my only go to for reviews I trust so great to hear.

Since I've been playing Bloodborne again I'm thinking really hard about getting this now. I may rage quit but I want to give this another shot.

Would have if it was available for physical copy. Think it just adds the season pass?
