Elite: Dangerous Xbox One Release Date Revealed for Final Game, Preview Owners to Get Exclusive Bonus

"Elite: Dangerous will exit the Xbox Game Preview program and become a fully released game on October 6th according to an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit. Elite: Dangerous is currently available on both PC and Xbox One, but is still considered an early access game on the console."

"One other piece of pretty interesting info came out of the exchange. When asked if “the game preview program owners get any exclusive reward for participating?” Braben responded with a simple “Yes.” It seems that Frontier Developments is going to show some appreciation to those Xbox One users that helped test the game during this early access period."

The game was pretty much the same as the retail PC version anyway, I had a couple of crashes at first but it's been fine lately. Great game.

Another console exclusive for the year, as well. Add it to the list!

The bonus better not be some garbage paint job. Give something like a variant ship...like a redesigned Imperial Clipper..

Just let it be one time access to a station that sells painite and platinum. ;)

I just got around to purchasing the beta/early access game, and really, really, REALLY love it. But I gotta say I feel this game could have easily been called Deep Space Truckers. :) I'm playing the solo version right now, will probably switch over to the open play when the game officially launches. The science in the game and the depth of controls that is usually found only in a PC title have really drawn me in.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons will let you land on planets

If there wasn't already a terrifying amount of world in Elite Dangerous, well, wave goodbye to that small sliver of your social life not spent in a cockpit. The first part of the space sim's second season of expansions will let you fly seamlessly to the the surface of planets and land.

Planets can be surface scanned to find interesting locations and we'll be able to touch down and do some exploring in the specially designed Surface Recon Vehicle or SRV Scarab vehicle. Each world has been 'procedurally simulated' to be entirely unique, with its own gravity and locations to explore. Mineral deposits, forts, bases and crashed ships are all hidden across the solar system.

Questing for a simulation that doesn't feel random, David Braben is focussing on building each world as realistically as possible. "What we’ve done with Elite Dangerous is we’ve created rules where a solar system for example is generated from first principles. It all doesn’t just obey the rules of science but is formed by them," he says. "You get bombardments of comets and all that sort of thing. It heats up so we know the exact chemical constituency of every planet. We know the temperature, we know how much it’s radiating. We know where the volcanoes are. We know what the weather is."

Horizons will also see players working together on planets. Bases are protected by anti air guns so you can work together with those below in their vehicles to infiltrate and take out enemy fire. "We’re extending Wings so they can work with ground vehicles as well so people can co-operate," explains Braben. "They can do things like attacking surface bases, discovering them. There will be lots of things hidden beneath the surface of the planets. The beauty is it’s a huge expanse so you can scan the planet from low orbit. There are different sort of layers to it. Ultimately you can actually drive around in your own little surface vehicle that we're calling the SRV."

More SRV's will be added at a later date but Braben is excited by the unique possibilities offered to players by the Scarab. "With time there will be [more] in the same way that there are different kinds of ships," he explains. "That one folds up so you can carry it. I just love that idea of setting down, not in any particular place and going from there and doing whatever it is you are here to do."

This isn't all that's offered by Horizons either. An update early in 2016 will add looting and crafting into the mix too. Elite Dangerous hasn't been skimping on extra content and this is yet another slew of expansions to the world. "We have engaged a lot with the community. We see what people want. We’ve been very proactive when people say ‘this is an issue’ and we’ve addressed it but also we do have a long term plan for the game as well," explains Braben. "But the thing to remember is this is not just one thing. When people buy Horizons they buy into the whole of Season 2, the whole set of expansions that you get. The comparison is looking at what we’ve done on the current season - where the game’s come out, we’ve had community goals, we’ve had Wings, we’ve had Power Play, we’ve got CQC coming soon. Each of these have other things in them. They have ships and other goodies. It’s not just the headline."

Elite Dangerous Horizons will be £29.99 for existing players on PC and included with the game for £39.99 for new players. It will be released on PC first with nothing yet confirmed for Xbox One.

[This will be huge, I think.]

If I remember correctly, Horizons will only allow landing on planets with no atmosphere, though, but it still looks pretty freaking sweet.

So do we in the early access get to keep our progress or is it reset when the retail game comes out ?

They are supposed to be allowing you to keep all your progress...but not your ships, which will be reduced to credits... Allowing you to repurchase your stuff.

I'm ready to have different colors for my ships finally.

Wow, so many games. Going to be a great Fall-Winter.

Those who enjoy space shooters and sci-fi titles in general will certainly want to cast their eyes on Elite: Dangerous, which is currently on sale on Steam and Frontier's official store. You'll be able to hop into your own ship and hit the stars for just $26.99.

The massive universe is open to you, it's up to you what you do with it. Both stores sport identical pricing, and Steam states the offer will close on September 28. Have you invested hours into Elite already? Let us know how you're enjoying it in the comments. Oh, and for you Xbox One owners, the title is heading to console on October 6.

I know this sounds stupid but if you already bought early access do you have to pay again?

Elite: Dangerous is getting loads of features to go alongside planetary landings in its Horizons update

I've played loads of Elite: Dangerous, but I still get moments where I'm in awe of its scope. It's a fully simulated galaxy you can fly around at will, warping between systems, supercruising within them and hanging near the planetary bodies themselves.

When I heard the Horizons update would be bringing planetary landings, I was taken aback when I found out these planets would be full-size and it would take ten days in real-time to gun around the circumference of an Earth-sized planet in your new ground vehicle, if you travel at an average of 100mph the whole time. Jesus.

It seems like there will be a reason to explore, too. On the planetary and lunar surfaces there will apparently be "new activities, new enemies and whole new ways to experience Elite Dangerous".

Apparently that's not enough for Frontier, though, as there's much more on the... horizon.

If you own one of the bigger ships, soon you'll be able to launch a fighter to see off enemies. Launched from your ship's hold, you can deploy it under AI control or take the stick yourself while your mothership hangs in space.

Imagine darting around the hull of your bigger ship, seeing off aggressors who are looking to steal your expensive cargo. It sounds brilliant.

There's also a new feature coming called Multi-Crew, which lets you fly some ships with your friends as a co-pilot. You can share and alternate control of weapon systems, turrets and flight, based on the situation.

This can also be combined with the mothership and its docked fighters, launching your friend out of your ship's backside like a deadly, metal poo. Apparently this will come in very handy when some behemoth trading ships arrive in season two.

Lastly, Elite: Dangerous is getting 1:1 scale, fully customisable human faces. Okay, so human faces aren't quite as impressive as a fully simulated galaxy, but it'll be nice to share a cockpit with your friend and recognise them as their avatar.

It's just another addition that ties into all the rest of the good work Frontier are doing to make it feel like a real galaxy. It looks like this will lead into more avatar-based shenanigans, too, with this little hint on the site: "Its[sic] the first step in the longer term plans we have for you, Commander..."

Exciting stuff.

I had better get back to it, because I'm guessing these ground vehicles and hulking motherships aren't gonna buy themselves. For the next few months, it's a smuggler's life for me.

I was floored by that EGX reveal. FD's method seems to be that they won't say jack s*** about anything between shows, and then they unleash the kraken and all the doubters rejoice.

Same here. The more i see of Elite: Dangerous the more impressed i am. At first i wasn't that into to it. Now it's like, just take my money.

"This is a quick-and-dirty un-edited capture from Horizons from a debug build on one of our dev machines, using the debug camera on an SRV and just zooming out ever faster from a crash site on the surface of a rocky potato-shaped planetoid, not unlike Vesta in our solar system. There are tons of little details we plan to tweak or fix, but I thought it would be great for you guys to see where we’re up to with this."

things you can do on planets:

-Crashed ships that contain loot; some crashed ships will be defended by security drones
-Stations that you can dock at for trade, repair, upgrades, etc.
-Pirate/smuggler bases that can be raided. Keep in mind that your friends can join you in buggies, or provide support from ships in low orbit
-Exploration for valuable materials from the planet
-Just for fun? Each planet has its own gravity based on its size and solar system, so some planets may have you floating around, using your buggy's thrusters to keep from drifting into space, while others may have more extreme gravity. The already excellent flight model will feel very different when affected by gravity.

Here's a good video of the devs explaining how they make the different kind of planets, well worth a watch.

Your first look at Elite: Dangerous' rover, Mass Effect's Mako in first-person
By Charlie Hall on Oct 16, 2015 at 1:30p @Charlie_L_Hall

Frontier Development's founder David Braben went to his personal YouTube channel to unveil Elite: Dangerous' newest vehicle, the Scarab Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV). Part of the spacefaring simulation's upcoming Horizons expansion, it looks like an absolute blast to drive.

The Horizons expansion, slated for first quarter 2016, will for the first time add surface landings to the game. Already the largest space game of its kind, Elite's 400-billion star systems will feature a smattering of celestial bodies — specifically planets without atmospheres — with accessible surface terrain, finally fulfilling its Kickstarter promise to allow players to land on and explore them in detail.

"Scanning worlds will reveal all-new surface gameplay opportunities as players detect signals, crashed ships, mineral deposits, outposts and fortresses, and embark on raids on the surface," Frontier said in a press release issued this past August. "Playing alone, or with friends on the ground and in the skies above, players can explore, mine, engage hostile forces and attempt to infiltrate strongholds guarding valuable rewards."

The video shows Braben giddily bouncing off the terrain in low-gravity, and it's hard not to make comparisons to the Mass Effect series' Mako.

Polygon expects to have hands-on time with the Horizons expansion soon. For more on the game, see our first-hand tour below.
