Finally upgraded my video card. Ended up going with the Sapphire Nitro+ 480. From what I have read it is one of the better 3rd party cards and was on sale for only $265. Will be a nice little upgrade until I build a new PC hopefully later this year. At this point I will probably wait for Kaby Lake to at least see deals on Skylake. I really wanted to give the AMD Zen a chance but that's sounded like it won't be until next year.

Anyways still rolling the i7 930 so probably bottlenecked a bit but just checking a few games I've either been able to max it out or at least get a good step up in quality.

If you had a Sandy Bridge CPU I would have said there is still no reason to upgrade but since you're even before that I think it would be wise to upgrade soon. I am on Haswell and I don't see any reason to upgrade for the foreseeable future.

Yea I thought I was screwed at first last night. Got the new card put in, went through bios and got to the Windows splash screen, and just sat there. No spinning dot load screen. Restarted a couple more times and same result. Went into bios and found a setting for some PnP (can't remember exact name) for video that was disabled so I turned it on and it worked. Not sure why it would have been different from previous cards as I don't remember ever having to change anything regarding that when I first built or replaced the card.

Maybe a difference from nVidia to AMD since this is my first AMD card. I have a 1000w power supply (lol) so should be good there, but motherboard and everything else pushing 6 years now so who knows. Maybe they blow up. My Corsair hydro cooler also 6 years so probably about to turn to dust. Oh well.

I want to build a AMD Zen system at some point for nothing other than s***s and giggles and to see what it is capable of.

that is what I have. I have the 480 and I love it!

Very nice! Question though.

Was there a reason you wanted Win 7 over 10?

I can understand stability but it cuts your access to DX12.

I'll get Windows 10 eventually for dual boot, but DX12 isn't a prerogative yet and I do have too many applications that need Windows 7 to work hassle-free.

Pricing seems fine? When I built my last computer from the ground up the pricing was similiar. Power supply is a little questionable being only 450w though.

If I were you I would not go with that ASUS STRIX RX 480. I would go with a reference design one for the blower style cooler since you're going to be a super small ITX case. You'll want that hot air produced by the GPU to vent right out the back of the case.

I'm getting this instead. Alienware 15 R3 laptop. I'm getting one with a GeForce 1060m, 256GB M.2 SSD/1TB hard drive, 16GB DDR4, 6th gen Intel i5, and a 99Wh battery. Runs $1600 but it's awesomesauce.

So I just learned about the Tobii eye tracking software that comes with the Alienware laptop and the games like Assassin's Creed Sydnicate and Tom Clancy's The Division that have some very stellar implementation.

I got the new laptop. I got Micro Star Industries laptop tho instead. Went with an i5 and 960m instead of maxing it out.

So Dell is very shady about their pricing... MSRP is $1474.99, but on Amazon, Dell lies by pricing their laptop at $3,749.40 and then pretending they are discounting it by over $2200. How is that not a lawsuit?

Just a wild ass guess based on some items I've been casually tracking, it may just be that when they first post it to Amazon, that's when the list price is set and any price drops in the future don't change that. I agree that it's entirely unhelpful at best, but I'm not sure this isn't on Amazon, which I hate to say because other than this little quirk they're awesome.

Actually, I have looked into that, and the Alienware lineup has always been priced between $1300 and $2000 MSRP at launch. Dell is being shady with that marketing. But the alienware do look awesome and have great thermals

That's a big downgrade from the 1060 laptop, I've been seeing 960m laptops for like 600 bucks in stores around here.

Yeah my i5/960m laptop cost $550 plus a $100 mail-in rebate

Anybody got some good general setting tips for Nividia Graphics Cards? or know of a guide?

Will have my first Nividia GPU in 13 years in 2 days.

Outside of removing the old drivers you should be good. You can install the GeForce Experience if you want but that's optional.

Video cards come with so much software these days.

ATi is forever trying to get me to install some crap or other. I'm pretty sure I don't use half of it lol.

1st card that gives 4K/60+fps Witcher 3 maxed I plan on getting.
I been waiting awhile now.
I find the PS4 Pro's 4K upscaling greatly superior to the PC's so I mainly game there.
Did pick up Gears 4 so I will be dusting her off soon.

I say avoid avoid the GeForce Experience app. Never used it and if I remember correctly I ran into issues using. Can't remember what but stopped using it beyond that point. You'll still have nVidia settings like you were used to with Radeon Settings if you need to tweak anything. Can't say that I ever did outside of each individual game though.

1070 is a great card. Since the TDP is so low (compared to 980 Ti and Titan X Maxwell) I was able to put my CPU and GPU on a single 360mm rad. Prior with my 780 Ti (which had same TDP as 980 Ti and Maxwell Titan) I had to run a 360 rad and a 240 rad if I wanted to keep my fans at 900rpm and have great temps.

I have $250 to spend on a new video card and I was thinking of getting the 480 but I'm having second thoughts about it and going with the 1060 instead. What do you guys think? I'm coming from a 7870.

I'm waiting for the new Nvidia GPU's in August (They do release in August right?). I already upgraded my Mobo, CPU & Ram: Asus Prime Z270-A, i5 7600K & Corsair Vengeance DDR4 (8X2). I must say, I really did miss the feeling of upgrading!. My last CPU was a gen 1 i5 and it was really on its last legs but mad respect for it lasting so goddamn long.

But the next upgrade (GPU) is the one that'll really hurt my wallet. And isn't it f*cking crazy how Nvidia is just releasing cards left and f*cking right? This sh!t needs to be controlled. Keep it simple.

Not sure if you ever upgraded or not, but AMD has the 580 now. Not sure on pricing difference though.
