Playstation E3 2018

Sammy Barker reviews the possible new announcements from Sony:

"Sony finds itself in an awkward spot: the PlayStation 4 is on fire and there are several exclusives lingering tantalisingly on the horizon that we’re all dying to learn more about. The problem is that the likes of Spider-Man, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us: Part II are all known quantities at this stage, and while we’re desperate to learn more about all of them, E3 2018 threatens to be Groundhog Day. Last year’s showcase – a decent press conference in isolation – was let down by the lack of any meaningful first-party surprises, and next month’s briefing threatens to be the same. But with Worldwide Studios pretty much entirely accounted for, could the company even have any new exclusives up its sleeve?"

Bottom line: don't expect much.

Here's my brief summary of the possibilities:

- a VR game from Manchester studio
- a UC tease from the new San Diego studio (too early, imo)
- Farpoint 2 for VR
- Bluepoint remake, possibly Demon's Souls (probably too early)
- Ueda's next game (too early)

So I'm not expecting anything new, apart from some VR titles.

What I am hoping for is solid release dates for previously announced games like Days Gone, Shenmue 3, FFVII remake, and Dreams. Plus updates on Spidey, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding.

Horizon 2 , arcade racer, and something else.

Date for Days Gone and TLOU 2 would be nice.

I think it's too early for the next Horizon. I expect that to be a launch title for the PS5.

Yeah, Yankee beat me to it.

Been almost 2 years.

And a PS5 isn't coming coming anytime soon.

I honestly don’t know what to expect from Sony, more like we’ll have to wait what third parties have in store for them. I just want Detroit and Dreams

Been almost 2 years.

Nah, just passed its one-year anniversary. It's a little over 14 months old. And for much of that time, a good chunk of the team was working on the expansion, which was meaty. So they've only had the full team on it for about 6 months.

It'll be at least another 2 years.

And a PS5 isn't coming coming anytime soon.

About 2 years from now, coincidentally.

Horizon would make a killer launch title. I'm sure that is what Guerrilla is targeting.

You think we’ll see the first one included or sold separately (a remaster)

I don't think the first game will be included. It'll be sold separately. Hopefully PS5 will be BC. I don't think they'll bother remastering the first game, because it looks so good already.

There is no way a PS5 launches in 2020. Sony are selling like gangbusters and the market is far from saturated. Would be a bad move.

Horizon, I am not saying it will launch this year or even next. But Sony do show games years away. I think they will announce it and show an in engine trailer. I do agree it would make a killer launch title

I disagree about the PS5 launch, now is the time to start planning a switch over in 2019 or 2020 at the latest, that or another upgraded PS4 that's closer to 9TF. They already expect sales to slow this year and if that's the case they'll be even lower next year. You can't hold the generation off forever because late adopters come in, especially since they don't buy many games. There will likely be a couple of years of PS4 support from 3rd parties after the PS5 launches just as there always is when we are in a generational transition.

Sony will also likely want to get something out there that can push VR further than the Pro can, for all the talk from some on forums about how the Pro was meant for VR it's not really pushed in any marketing or interviews I've seen. Just about everyone I know who has a PSVR loves it but wishes the games didn't have to take such a visual hit.

If anything I think they'll just patch it and a few other select first party games for free to make them native 4K and maybe improve some other graphical features (maybe even performance) so they can have some native 4K 1st party games through BC on launch day without having to push their studios to get things ready too fast.

You don't really need huge titles at launch, there will be plenty of 3rd party games and the fact that it's a new console will already get the hardcore to be there day 1. I think it'd be a mistake to release Horizon as a PS5 exclusive at launch, with the first one selling as well as it did they would just be leaving money on the table by either not waiting until the installed base is over 10 million or they could also make it a cross gen game and have it release on the PS4 as well.

VR...people still care about this? The VR craze seems dead to me..not sure abandoning this gen to push VR is a very good idea.

You can't hold the generation off forever, no...but the market is far from saturated. Sure, hardware sales will slow, that is inevitable. But Sony are in a great place. They have all the momentum, and their biggest competition is floundering in their own ineptitude with no signs of pulling themselves out of it.

Both MS and Sony want longer generations. I don't see them starting fresh so soon.

Could I be wrong, sure..it is 50/50 at this point..but I just don't see how it makes sense for Sony to do this so soon. They don't need to.

2020 is the most commonly given estimate for when PS5 will come out, when you listen to people discuss the issue. 2021 is a possibility, but some informed observers say that waiting that long would be a mistake. Sales are strong but declining (they peaked in 2016) and they will continue to decline this year and next. Hardware is aging and outclassed. You don't want to wait until the market is saturated; you need to launch when you've still got strong momentum. 2020 is my bet. PS4 will continue to sell after that, at a much lower price point.

As for Horizon, that game been featured at every E3 for the past 3 or 4 years. I think they'll give it a rest this year. It's too far away, but besides that, they need to let anticipation build. You know that old phrase about "You haven't been away long enough for me to miss you."

Hardware isn't where the money is made. Yes, sales are declining, but if we look where we are now compared to last gen there are still 100 millionish consumers out there(that didn't include the wii numbers). I understand you don't wait till the market is saturated but the market isn't close to being that was my point.

It is also in Sony's best interest to let MS go first. MS are going to find it hard to release a console that looks significantly better than X1X in 2020, but Sony can make one that looks far better than the PS4 Pro. And MS are in no position to start a new gen. They have no momentum, goodwill with their consumers is quickly running out and they need time to make game pass a hardware moving service.

Their hardware being outclassed is rather irrelevant when that platform is struggling software wise...and to take full advantage of it requires a sizeable investment.

I Just don't don't see it happening in 2020....but time will tell I guess. Very little time too.

Oh, I agree -- they're not going to make it exclusive only to the PS5 and ignore a 100+ million install base on PS4. But Guerrilla will be targeting PS5 as the lead platform, and anyone wanting to play it as it's "meant to be played" will want a PS5.

I think there's a good chance Death Stranding will end up as a PS5 launch title, too.

I don't know that Death Stranding will be out by the time the PS5 launches lol.

Letting MS go first would be a mistake IMO, when you are number one you stay aggressive and keep building on what you have going, you don't sit around and let things stagnate and give a competitor with an ungodly amount of money (not that they seem willing to spend it on games...yet) find a way to work themselves into a competitive position and possibly eat away at your potential customer base.

To be honest I'd still be fine with another PS4 upgrade vs a PS5, maybe something in the 8-10TF range with a new CPU that is fully BC and has all newer games upgraded to native 4K with other graphical enhancements and 60fps when available but also allow exclusive games that can really take advantage of the hardware, it'd be sort of a soft launch of a new gen without having to start over from scratch. That of course relies on them being able to make sure there are no issues with the newer CPU/GPU compatibility but I'm guessing they could work that out if they really wanted to.

It's all tricky, timing and pricing are key, at the same time many devs said last gen went on too long and seeing that happen again would be a mistake. The Pro and One X really don't address that problem completely.

Not a mistake at all. Like I said previously, Sony are in much better shape going in than MS will ever be. Yes, be aggressive, but be aggressive where it matters most, games. Nobody is saying sit around and let things stagnate, waiting for a few more years for a next gen isn;t stagnation..stagnation comes from few too many interesting new games. Case in point the xbox 360 last gen vs ps4..PS4 was getting TLOU while 360 got nothing.

Funny, cause many devs have always complained that generations were not long enough. We already have devs saying they want this gen to be long( Defiance 2050 dev).

It is tricky...but the one with all the momentum doesn't have to force things.

I mean personally, I would love a new gen to kick off in 2020, I love new gens...all that possibility. I just don't think it will happen because one company doesn't need it and the other is no place to try and take on another gen.

If any first party is showing a new game it is Japan Studio. Knack 2, Gravity Rush 2 and The Last Guardian are all out. They are a big studio and capable of working on multiple projects and I am sure it will be a new I.P. Could be rayspace but no one knows.

I don't think it's really forcing things it's just controlling your own business and not being reactionary or planning around a competitor that has only really challenged you once and that was when you let them launch first. As I said I think 2019/2020 would be great, part of that is likely because I'm just ready, like you I love new gens :) or as I said a further upgraded PS4 would be fine as well.

It wasn't just because they launched first, though. The Xbox last gen was great for 5 years. Some fantastic exclusives, quality online, features, good hardware. Just putting it on them being first is a huge middle finger to all MS did right last last gen.

Never said that was the only reason but it was a contributing factor, along with pricing and MS putting out a lot of 1st party games. Sony also did a lot wrong starting with launching a year later and charging an arm and a leg for their console. Don't forget MS rushed into last gen because the original Xbox wasn't doing a whole lot for them other than bleeding money.

Also I think your "huge middle finger" line was a bit dramatic given the nature of the conversation lol

Pretty disappointed even though I am excited to see Death Stranding and Ghosts of Namanura, and maybe even The Last of Us II a little bit.

What I am excited about is the fact that for two years now, Sony has seemingly been pulling their punches which makes me think PS5 could show up in a big way next year!
