Playstation E3 2018

This deflates any hopes for new announcements, for me, but it's what I expected -- just a focus on the big games that are already coming. Ho hum, but that's what I figured. The surprise is that it sounds like it'll be mostly just a video presentation. However, that's not too far off from what E3 press conferences have become anyhow -- executive comes out and makes a speech, then they press play on a video.

These "deep dives" tend to spoil the games somewhat for me (while I'm playing: "Oh yeah, I remember that from E3"), so I'll be avoiding the TLoU 2 stuff and probably Death Stranding as well. I will probably tune in for the Ghosts of T. presentation, because I've got no idea what the gameplay will be like and whether I'd enjoy it. I need to know more about that one.

I hope we don't get 3 Nintendo Direct type presentations.

It won't be like Nintendo Direct (Sony is doing a live conference) but those are great. Sony sitting around talking about games like at PSX is bad.

Nintendo Directs aren't as exciting as the best conferences but they are way easier to watch than most.

It was the only reason you gave.

Wasn't dramatic.

Only reason I gave because it's the only one that pertained to the discussion of launching first/second. Letting MS go first shouldn't factor into the decision making at all, any power advantaged gained by waiting a year would be worthless, going from 10-11TF to 11-12TF isn't going to show up much on screen.

Being that this gen has gone so well for Sony I'm pretty sure they want to repeat as much of the beginning stages as possible and that includes launching first or at the very latest at the same time. The One X launch sort of puts MS in a bad spot, they have to wait until around 2020/2021 at the earliest for a new console but Sony is free to launch in 2019/2020.

When you say things like 'the only time the competition was competitive was when they went first' then no, it isn't the only thing that pertains to the discussion...everything else becomes relevant.

Them going second has nothing to do with the power gap between Xbox. It is more about perception. PS4 Pro to PS5 at 10 tf is a bigger jump than X1X to X2 at 10 tf.

What Sony need to do is not repeat the start of this gen, they need to start with the Software wheel fully firing.

I don't think the X locks Microsoft out of launching at a certain time. I fully expect both Sony and Microsoft to have their next gen consoles

Too much goodwill has been built with Sony at this point. The PS5 is going to sell gangbusters if it mirrors the launch and first few years (software wise) of the PS4.

There's only two things that could tip the next gen in Xbox' s favor:

1) A colossal f*** up from Sony.

2) A Fortnite/GTAV type of exclusive on Microsofts console early on.

Neither is likely to happen but we're nearing the end of the console wars anyway. Boxes are akin to cowboys in the late 1800's.

Software is the battlefield now. Software will be the new platform wars.

Well I guess Japan Studio are either being saved for another conference (which is weird!) or they are working PS5 games. We shall see. I am still very eager to see more of those 4 first party titles.

That's not true at all, it would be nice if going all in on software at launch was a thing but it's just not. Third parties will supply the majority at launch as they always do and 1st party will likely be one or two AAA "ish" titles with the bigger things being held off for when their are more consoles in homes and more potential customers to buy the games. It no longer makes sense to put out a game that costs a fortune to make if you only have a few million potential customers in the first few months. Of course they have to release some games to show off what the console can do but the games with the most potential for sales will be held back.

If the PS5 is backwards compatible (which it almost surely will be) they will probably be able to upgrade existing 1st party games hopefully for free but that will help pad the list of 1st party offerings a bit. If they are able to get native 4K with other graphical upgrades in God of War, TLOU2, Horizon, Spider-Man and Death Stranding and maybe even making them 60fps (only because the CPU will likely be miles ahead of what's in any current console now along with a much more powerful GPU) that should help pad the list of reasons to pick up the new console but either way early adopters will buy it even without a slew of new AAA games on day one.

Putting out a $500 machine in 2017 almost surely locks them out of any new hardware for at least 3-4 years, especially the way they talked it up and marketed it. There is no law against them releasing something earlier but it would surely cause some issues with their fan base. I do wonder if they will end up ending support for the original X1 once their next machine comes out though. Sony says they still believe in generations, MS says they don't but some execs have admitted at some point you have to move on.

Maybe they'll show something at TGS or possibly PGW. I'm curious what they're up to.

Push Square:

"Internally, we’d started referring to Sony’s E3 2018 show as Groundhog Day in reference to the inevitable repetition; we tried really hard to come up with a list of new exclusives that it could potentially announce during its press conference – it’s now obviously redundant. But this is why I think today’s announcement is probably a good thing: it lets people know what to expect ahead of time, and puts an end to outrageous speculation.

"After all, expectations are always the biggest E3 mood killer – regardless of the company under the spotlight. Whether it’s a thirst for first-party exclusives at Microsoft or demand for a long-forgotten franchise at Nintendo, we’ve all seen how the insatiable hunger of fans can absolutely kill otherwise solid presentations. You could argue that PlayStation’s paying the price for a two year period where it seemed to have a never-ending stream of fan pleasers; it’d probably agree."

I'm probably just gonna cancel my E3 pre-order for this year.

I'm not really saying that. I am just saying that Sony always has the issue of starting slow software wise and is about time they fixed that.

Yeah they tend to support the console that's on the way out up to and sometimes beyond the launch of the new one. At least with a BC console they could just upgrade games made for the PS4 instead of having to totally build them from scratch for the new machine. Of course a built from the ground up game would be best but a mix of both is probably what we'll get.

Yeah Sony has learnt with the Switch it is a good idea to have a strong first party output in year 1 or 2. I expect Guerrilla, Japan Studio, Polyphony and a small team at Naughty Dog already have games in the works. Wouldn't surprise me if Bluepoints remake is also a PS5 launch title. Plus they are opening that studio in San Diego so I think they are aware PS4 is good and will get to 100 million but now its time to focus efforts on PS5.

The fact that they aren't announcing stuff this year makes definitely makes you think they have figured that out

PS3 in 2013 had way too good of a lineup

Well, the Pro came out 3 years after the PS4. The X came out 4 years in. That would flip the years in 2020 (PS 5 after 4 years and XB Two after 3). That said, I think it will depend on what each company thinks constitutes a big enough jump to be worth it at s given price point.

I can see MS launching in 2020, just to keep pace with the PS5. It could be dangerous to give Sony a year's head start at the beginning of a new generation. That was a part of why the 360 was successful -- it had no competition for the first year.

On the other hand, maybe they'll stick to the idea that "generations" don't exist anymore. Then they'd just launch when they felt like it, which I'm guessing would be 2021, with marginally more powerful hardware.

I still think Sony is going to have at least one big surprise. I may be wrong and disappointed. But we'll see.

Concrete genie looked cool when it debuted, I know they said there is more to the game than just painting so it'll be interesting to see what else there is to it.

Problem here is there is so little gameplay. Considering it is believed that Days Gone and Spider-man are going to be a focus I would expect far more than trailers for them.

Sounds plausible, but then, anyone could've invented that list based on what we know already.

What's the source?

If true, I'd be fine with that.

Well Days Gone is not one of the four games they said they will focus on. Its Ghost, Spiderman, TLOU, and Death Stranding

A couple supposed insiders on resetera say that Bloodborne 2 is not in development so that is probably fake

I knew one of them in that trailer was mentioned. Seems odd that Days Gone wont be a focus, though. Surely that is coming pretty soon.

Its possible they don't want it and TLOU at the same show to avoid comparisons of them being similar even though they really aren't

Or they just don't want Days Gone to get overshadowed by the others and are saving it for Paris Games Week

Seems like Days Gone doesn't show too well at E3, for some reason. I think they want to try something else. It got a big, in-depth feature in GI, which I think has served them better.

Shadows Die Twice is not a sequel to Bloodborne. I don't think you are going to get a Bloodborne 2 or a new Fromsoft PS exclusive till PS5. Also no chance Bluepoint are ready to show another remaster.

I'll probably have a stroke if they show actual game-play of Death Stranding instead of a weird trailer (which I'd be fine with, lol). Not because I am dying to play it yet, but because I have zero expectation to see it in playable form for another year...
