During a special Famitsu stream early this morning, the folks behind the mega-popular Pokémon series revealed a very special departure from the franchise’s roleplaying roots.

Developed by Namco Bandai Games, Pokkén Tournament appears to be a fighting game akin to the company’s own Tekken series. The footage demonstrated during the short preview shows off a quick battle between Fighting-type Pokémon Lucario and Machamp, with the former powering up to its Mega form near the end of the teaser.

This news comes after trademarks were filed for this specific title and small bits of footage were released at Pokemon Game Show last year.

While little information is available at this point in time, we do know that Namco’s lead Tekken and Soulcalibur producers, Katsuhiro Harada and Masaaki Hoshino respectively, are both personally involved in the development of this project. More details are planned for next week’s installment of Famitsu.

Pokkén Tournament is expected to land in Japanese arcades sometime in 2015.
