I don't know Brad Sams, but I'm told he has covered Xbox for years and is pretty reliable.*

via Brad Sams:

"This past week, I was tipped off that the next generation Xbox was codenamed Scarlett and in an effort to track down if this information was accurate, I was able to view content that highlighted several unannounced Microsoft products that are coming in the next two years.

Microsoft is planning for the next Xbox console release to arrive in 2020. But what is more interesting, is that Microsoft describes ‘Scarlett’ as a family of devices; meaning we may see multiple pieces of hardware released that year.

That date may seem relatively close considering that the Xbox One X launched last year but Microsoft is aggressively moving ahead with hardware in the console space to shake up the industry. But what we don’t know is if this is a brand new set of devices or simply a more ‘powerful’ Xbox One that is again, fully backward compatible with all the content available today.

Considering how much effort Microsoft has put into backward compatibility, I would expect the Scarlett devices to support current gen games but offer more advanced features and align possibly with Microsoft’s upcoming game-streaming services.

As with any leak this far out, timing and plans can change but I was able to verify the information I viewed as being authentic and fully believe that the company is on-track to release the new console in two years."

*although others say he claimed Halo would be split SP/MP, and he was wrong about that, so who knows.

2020 would make sense to me. That's still my bet for when PS5 will show up, and MS wouldn't want to be a year late.

I assume the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will probably be pretty close in performance. The question is, how much more powerful can these next consoles be with their release date 2 years away, at an affordable price? I have to believe we will be looking at $400?

It's not going to be a huge leap, relative to the X and the Pro -- not if they want to keep the price to $400.

If they do offer multiple SKUs, MS could design a powerful but more expensive option (say, at $500) and then another one with more standard specs at $400. That would be a good strategy, because it captures the hardcore gamers who want the best hardware -- I'm assuming Sony would just have a $400 model, less powerful -- but it would also allow people to buy in at a lower price.

Not doubting source but was it not Windows Central who said it was Codenamed "Scarlet" awhile back. I believe they even mentioned consoles.

A fair bit. The power of the X1X is actually pretty low for today's technology. and the CPU is pretty s***.

Microsoft's console will be $400. Doesn't matter how much they might lose at that price.

My predictions, no sources. Completely pulling out my ass:

$200, $400 and $600.

Streaming box. Next gen machine. Next gen machine with more RAM, better CPU and better GPU.

There's always this challenge to balance price and quality. Obviously Microsoft is no longer in the business of losing their shirt on hardware sales like they did with the OG Xbox. Give us enthusiasts an expensive option that's not compromised.

Edit: Streaming machine might be later but it's coming. I predict all next gen consoles have sim cards that connect to 5G. When Spencer announced that they were working on streaming that was as good as local, it was a giveaway. There is no way to accomplish that without directly connecting the device over super low latency which would be with a 5G sim card.

Yup. I think it'll launch whenever the PS5 is ready to launch, or maybe a few months before.

I don't know about WC, but I heard that Phil specifically said during their presentation that they're working on the next Xbox "consoles," plural.

Xbox wants to be the most powerful console on deck all the time from now on. It's going to be interesting to see what their choices are going to be, especially if they want to launch close or even before PS5.

If it turns out that the premium model is significantly more powerful than what Sony offers, I might end up picking up an Xbox in 2020. Assuming I can still play BC titles in X-enhanced form on the new machine.

We'll have to see how things shake out. There are a lot of unknowns. One thing we do know is how bad people generally are at predicting these things, especially this far out.

Indeed. There are a TON of unknowns. Even the release date isn't confirmed by MS. The only thing we know about Scarlett:

  1. It's the next Xbox
  2. Phil said there would be multiple Scarlett devices
  3. That it will be BC (per Phil based on what he said about all their future devices)
  4. It will have a hard drive to install games on, at least one of the devices will

I know "Scarlett" is a code name, but is it based on something?

All I think of is, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." Which is probably not the reaction they're hoping for.

That it will be BC (per Phil based on what he said about all their future devices)
And it is still an open question how comprehensive the BC will be. For instance, with new CPU and GPU, will that mean the X-enhancements to previous BC titles will transfer over, or will they need to do more work on them first? Who knows.

I'll stick this here rather than create a separate thread. It's another indication -- this time from an MS exec -- that the next Xbox console will be launched in 2020.

"While discussing the Xbox One's struggle to maintain traction in Korea, Xbox Business Lead for Asia, Jeremy Hinton, has reportedly expanded on Microsoft's next-generation console hardware. Speaking with major Korean gaming outlet, GameMeca, Hinton claims engineers are aiming to announce the console "next year." Below we have a translated excerpt from the article, provided to Windows Central by a professional translator.

"Lastly, Hinton made an announcement in regards to the surprise news about the next Xbox which was announced on the 10th during the Xbox showcase. Many engineers are working hard to announce the new console by next year and doing their best to announce it as soon as possible."

edit: "Microsoft US has reached out to say: "This is a translation error. We have not announced any timeframe."

Hi all,

With news of the new generation arriving in 2020, what are we looking for from the new generation?

Which could well mean that 'announcement' was mistranslated but that he did say that. I checked my Clue board and it did say it was Ms. Scarlet, in the observatory, with a 128-core Ryzen. It also told me that Half-Life 3 was coming out in 1986, for what it's worth.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm buying the "translation error" thing. Sounds more like an overseas exec slipped up.

How will this effect hospitals, specifically children’s hospital and maybe retirement homes?

BC could be the down fall of donating ones console only to receive it with no games because one can play forward their old games on the new box.

That’s probably why MS is donating consoles with the funds brought in from fanfest...

I think, MS will launch their games streaming services and there will be a streaming only device, perhaps for $100. Then an optical drive-less Xbox for $200-300 and a premium device for $400+

The architecture is unlikely to change all that much which means BC will be a lot easier than it was in previous gens. I would think all those X1X enhaanced X360 games will carry over...all of them.

Hope so. I've heard a lot about how challenging BC is, especially the X-enhanced BC versions of OG Xbox games. People are constantly complimenting that team on what wizards they are. That makes me think, well, if it required that much time and wizardry to get it running on the X, how much additional time and wizardry is going to be required for it to get running on a console with very different specs? I'd love for them to announce full BC -- i.e., everything currently BC will be immediately BC, in its current form (all X-enhancements intact) -- but I'll have to wait and see.

In any case, I'm glad that we're getting hints that the consoles are coming in 2020. Two years (or 2 yrs, 5 mos, if it's Nov 2020) isn't too far off.
