I know "Scarlett" is a code name, but is it based on something?

All I think of is, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." Which is probably not the reaction they're hoping for.

That it will be BC (per Phil based on what he said about all their future devices)

And it is still an open question how comprehensive the BC will be. For instance, with new CPU and GPU, will that mean the X-enhancements to previous BC titles will transfer over, or will they need to do more work on them first? Who knows.

I'll stick this here rather than create a separate thread. It's another indication -- this time from an MS exec -- that the next Xbox console will be launched in 2020.

"While discussing the Xbox One's struggle to maintain traction in Korea, Xbox Business Lead for Asia, Jeremy Hinton, has reportedly expanded on Microsoft's next-generation console hardware. Speaking with major Korean gaming outlet, GameMeca, Hinton claims engineers are aiming to announce the console "next year." Below we have a translated excerpt from the article, provided to Windows Central by a professional translator.

"Lastly, Hinton made an announcement in regards to the surprise news about the next Xbox which was announced on the 10th during the Xbox showcase. Many engineers are working hard to announce the new console by next year and doing their best to announce it as soon as possible."

edit: "Microsoft US has reached out to say: "This is a translation error. We have not announced any timeframe."

I wonder if the assets in horizon 4 will be reused in some form for playgrounds new fable/ip....the have chickens, deer and sheep roaming about.

DUDE!!!! what if 343 and playground are sharing animal/herd AI and tech? Maybe some of Rares water tech is being thrown at 343, as they did to horizon 3 and PUBG

Which could well mean that 'announcement' was mistranslated but that he did say that. I checked my Clue board and it did say it was Ms. Scarlet, in the observatory, with a 128-core Ryzen. It also told me that Half-Life 3 was coming out in 1986, for what it's worth.

Fable 60fps farting on chickens confirmed!

Yeah, I don't know if I'm buying the "translation error" thing. Sounds more like an overseas exec slipped up.

How will this effect hospitals, specifically children’s hospital and maybe retirement homes?

BC could be the down fall of donating ones console only to receive it with no games because one can play forward their old games on the new box.

That’s probably why MS is donating consoles with the funds brought in from fanfest...

I think, MS will launch their games streaming services and there will be a streaming only device, perhaps for $100. Then an optical drive-less Xbox for $200-300 and a premium device for $400+

The architecture is unlikely to change all that much which means BC will be a lot easier than it was in previous gens. I would think all those X1X enhaanced X360 games will carry over...all of them.

Hope so. I've heard a lot about how challenging BC is, especially the X-enhanced BC versions of OG Xbox games. People are constantly complimenting that team on what wizards they are. That makes me think, well, if it required that much time and wizardry to get it running on the X, how much additional time and wizardry is going to be required for it to get running on a console with very different specs? I'd love for them to announce full BC -- i.e., everything currently BC will be immediately BC, in its current form (all X-enhancements intact) -- but I'll have to wait and see.

In any case, I'm glad that we're getting hints that the consoles are coming in 2020. Two years (or 2 yrs, 5 mos, if it's Nov 2020) isn't too far off.

Pretty sure you will get your wish.

If your prediction of 2020 is correct then you don;t have all that much time to wait, should be announced this time next year.

Yeah, that's what the Korean exec made it sound like, in his "mistranslation." Rushing to get it ready to announce in 2019. Which should make next year's E3 pretty exciting, if they are able to do that.

They will also probably be ready at that point to show some of what those new studios are working on, plus a full unveil of the next Halo, which is looking like a launch title for the next Xbox.

Sounds great and all... but if no fish ai, no buy.

Indeed. There are a TON of unknowns. Even the release date isn't confirmed by MS. The only thing we know about Scarlett:

  1. Phil said there would be multiple Scarlett devices

I think Spencer said: the Xbox One X
team is "deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles, where we will once again deliver on our commitment to deliver the benchmark of console gaming."

I think the real issue here is people are taking the ''consoles'' part and assuming massively different SKUs. Odds are, at launch, only difference between multiple SKUs will be HDD space. Will there be multiple next-gen consoles, obviously there will be, but having varying power consoles at launch, nope. People are already screaming streaming box, but none of us have seen how good their streaming feature will be. Their current streaming feature from Xbox One to PC App isn't great.

If anything, those multiple consoles are likely to just be the day 1 X2 and then the mid-gen refresh 4 years later. It isn't hard to determine what you can make in 4 years times when the tech has a predictable path of cost and improvement...even more so when you are strong partners with the tech company making this stuff.

I know he said that. There isn't anything stopping Sony from doing the same though.

Just for reference...

The XBox One was revealed to the public on May 21st, 2013. Six months before release.

The PS4 was revealed on February 20th, 2013. Nine months before release.

E3 2012 didn't have much (anything?) xBox One/PS4 related.

I'm not so sure next E3 is going to be the big next gen blowout we are all hoping for.

If it turns out that the premium model is significantly more powerful than what Sony offers, I might end up picking up an Xbox in 2020. Assuming I can still play BC titles in X-enhanced form on the new machine.

We'll have to see how things shake out. There are a lot of unknowns. One thing we do know is how bad people generally are at predicting these things, especially this far out.
Won't be and even if it was do you think it will best what the PS5 devs put out?

BC will be in 4sure and if the hardware is powerful enough i not only expect the PS5 to follow suit but to be able to play all PlayStation games.

They already put out better than what the PS4 devs put out, so it is a no brainer.

Well, I was using the "sarcasm" font that PV gave us. But hey! :)

Sarcasm is usually rooted in truth. I just believe that with hardware being a half gen off between the two (meaning X came out after Pro), how could we not expect the next xbox to surpass the PS5 if it comes after? It is simple logic and no slam against Sony. At some point you have to commit to a hardware solution, and the one who comes after is usually the one with the most power. Usually. Unless Sony or MS makes a serious misstep, this is what will happen. PS5 will be a monster, Xbox 2 (scarlet) will be just a little better prob. PS6, takes over, Xbox 3...etc... at this point, just a natural cycle since consoles are not releasing congruently.

I'm betting both consoles will release in 2020. That's what Michael Pachter predicted, too, so I know I'm on solid ground. But seriously, there are a couple indications that MS is targeting 2020, and 2020 is the favorite for prognosticators picking the PS5 date. Plus, I don't think either MS or Sony will want to give the other company a year's head start on the next gen.
