Don't know if this was any good, but Tacoma is coming to PS4 May 8th:

"The PlayStation 4 version of Tacoma will add a new “Developer Commentary Mode” featuring over two hours of audio commentary from the writers, designers, artists, and programmers behind the game."

Ever feel like playing a game as Henry David Thoreau? No? I sort of do. Emerson is one of my heros. I wasn't a fan of the way Thoreau wrote, but I did like what he wrote about -- nature, self-reliance, detachment from normal society, simplicity, living a reflective life, etc.

Walden got a lot of positive press reception when it came out on PC last year. Lots of indie type awards for forward thinking and advocacy for rabbits and whatnot.

Watching the trailer, I am not impressed with the gameplay. Hammering nails, putting up boards, and going fishing ... that's not exactly the stuff of Thoreau. But then, how would you create a game around the real stuff of Thoreau, which has to do with sensitivity to nature and inner reflection? That doesn't translate to gameplay. So you end up cataloging birds and pounding nails. Actually, the game probably has more to it than that. I'm just reacting to the trailer.

Anyhow, Walden is coming to PS4 in May.

Sony's studios continue their winning streak
The success of the PS4's excellent first-party experiences belie the commercial challenges single-player titles still face

(excerpts)

"Sony's big games are tied together by a single clear thread: they are extremely polished, expensively developed titles that stick to a concept of the single-player experience with something that borders on ideological purity. They're straight down the line traditional console titles. They might almost be crafted as a direct answer to consumers who complain about no longer getting the complete experience when you buy a game, as they pointedly feature no new business models, no microtransactions, no season passes.

"The reason for this expanding gulf is, simply put, that Sony's economic incentives are different. Sony's blockbuster single-player games are both commercial products in themselves, and incredibly powerful marketing tools for PlayStation. Their existence is justified not just by their sales, but by the halo effect they create for the platform as a whole. Horizon, God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, The Last Guardian; these aren't just great games, they're intrinsic parts of what PlayStation is to consumers and to Sony itself.

"Sony is presently operating on a level that's simply out of reach to most third parties. It's great news for Sony and its studios; but for those wishing that the commercial logic of single-player games will find a healthy balance, Sony's blockbusters are a false hope."

Nah. Single player games are dead bruh.

Nah. Single player games are dead bruh.

Note that last sentence, though. Sony's SP games are very successful for them, but that doesn't translate to third-party publishers. It doesn't apply to the industry as a whole, just to first-party publishers.

Here's more:

"The company can lavish resources, time and attention on these products because it recognises them as pillars holding up the console business - itself the pillar which holds up Sony Corporation.

"For any other publisher or developer thinking of creating a game on the same scale, with the same level of resourcing, polish and focus, the commercial calculation is far tougher to square away. The sheer level of investment required to create something so technologically and artistically impressive may be impossible to justify without loading the dice somewhat by adding season passes, microtransactions and lord knows what else to the equation.

"Most publishers have been backing away from this kind of 'pure' single-player experience for precisely that reason....

"PS4 has had arguably one of the finest streaks of high-profile exclusive titles of any console in history. It's worth considering the tough situation of other firms working on single-player titles, however; the success of Horizon, Uncharted 4 or God of War doesn't necessarily stand as proof, as some might claim, that pure single-player titles are just as commercially viable as ever. Rather, they're proof only that the appeal of these titles is still powerful; that as showcases and system-sellers, they are almost unrivalled, but that's not the same thing as being commercially attractive to a third-party who doesn't have a vested financial interest in system sales."

PSN is finally making me pay taxes on purchases. It's been fun while it lasted.

I hear ya. I just feel like the industry as a whole could try harder. Especially Microsoft, who has billions of dollars at their disposal. If some random no name developer/publisher is afraid of losing everything and doesn't want to take the risk that's understandable. To act like only Sony and Nintendo can make great and successful single player games is crazy to me though. If devs really think GAAS is the future they have another thing coming, lol. It's part of the future, but we still need our epic single player games.

Maybe you can move to a state where they don't tax it...unless they add taxes in every state now. I haven't purchased anything from psn or xbox something in years.

Sort of a silly thing to share but I figured I would anyway lol. A good friend of mine recently bought a PS4 and was bummed to be reading all of these PS5 rumors. I told him that firstly he had no right to complain because he waited so long to buy into this generation but that secondly if he was going to wait he picked the right year. There are a ton of great games already out that he can buy and with games like Far Cry 5, God of War, Red Dead 2 and Spider-Man coming out this year that 2018 may be the best year of this gen for PS4 so far.

Yeah, he's buying in at a great time. He's got a bunch of great exclusives to choose from and more on the way. And he's got a lot of multiplats to choose from, too. All at reduced prices.

PS5 will more than likely play PS4 and maybe even older PlayStation games..you can tell him this.

Oh I told him but he doesn't want to worry about buying a PS5 for new games, I told him there is no way that the PS4 would be abandoned anytime soon and that all of the big 3rd party games will come out on both consoles for quite some time. If development costs continue to rise there is no way they'll abandon the PS4 for at least two years after the PS5 launches.

This is why i can't buy consoles 3-4 years into a gen. I feel like i miss out on a lot and never get around to playing games. s***, even being an early adopter i miss out on games. Just got a Switch last month and i can see Zelda and Mario alone lasting me months. Then again, those are two of the best games of all time. It's a good problem to have at least.

Yeah I can't wait either, hell I bought a One X just because it had some visual improvements for games that would have looked just fine on my PS4 Pro lol.

Same here, I'm so regretting my purchase, I was planning on buying all Multiplats on the X but my next is Far Cry 5 and I recently saw someone's created the Lost island for the PS4 version, I NEED THIS!

Yeah I'm not regretting my purchase yet but I also couldn't really recommend buying one to someone who already has a PS4 Pro, if MS had more quality experiences you can't get anywhere else it'd be a different story but so far I'm just not seeing it.

Decided to let my PSN+ sub lapse. It's the first time I have not had PSN+ since they debut of the PS4. I found it wasn't really worth the $60 a year, as I wasn't really playing any of the free games, and all the games I buy on it are single player now. It's been about 2 weeks, and I honestly can't even notice a difference. Everything else works. My son is playing Fortnite still on it.

Now that I am less of a multiplayer guy than I ever have been, I am kinda glad we are seeing lots of great single player games.

Well my external HDD bit the dust already so I decided to spend a little extra and get a 2TB SSD which should be here tomorrow, it was $400 sadly going up to 4TB was almost $1500 so that was out of the question lol.

Anyone pick up Dragon's Crown Pro? I want it, but not at $50. Sadly, I don't think the Odin Sphere remaster went on sale until nearly a full year after release, so it may be a bit of wait.

I got it. But I got it when amazon was having this weird sale on it. Got the Colector's Hardened edition for ~$42. Its the same game as the Ps3 version but a bit sharper graphics wise. That art style lends itself well to any resolution, thus its harder to see improvements to it. My previous character from the PS3 version also transferred over but it seemed like a good time to start a new character.

I didn't buy it on the last round of systems, but have wanted to play it for ages. I’d been waiting for a PS4 version for ages, but I can’t justify it at this price with how big my backlog is already! I’m mad missed the sale you picked it up during!

A classy-looking indie puzzler, coming out in a few days (5/22).

"If you're not familiar with Gorogoa, it's a game made up of lavishly illustrated panels that players arrange and combine to solve puzzles. In Eurogamer's Gorogoa review, Christian Donlan awarded it an essential, saying: "Inspired and transporting, this is a game unlike any other."

For clarification, the tweet above is John Kodera saying PS4 is entering the final stage of its lifecycle.

If you're in crouch mode until March 2021,

t7mIJ9e.gif

maybe that means PS5 will release in Fall 2021, rather than 2020? Although I don't want to read too much into it.

p.s. Scratch that. He's saying they'll support PS4 at least through 2021. That tells us nothing about when PS5 will release.

At the end of his presentation, Kodera moted that Sony's perspective on the games business has shifted, from emphasis on selling millions of units to an emphasis on engaging millions of MAUs.

That is similar to what MS is doing now as well.

Kodera has roots in PSN, so I imagine he's very attuned to that. Of course, what "engagement" or even "MAU" really means is anyone's guess, seems to vary depending on who's talking, and is often shrouded in corporate secrecy. Which is why I still prefer hardware numbers. They are clear in a way that talk of MAU and engagement never is.
