Question about Play Anywhere games and console sharing

We just got a new computer to replace our 9 year old PC that couldn't play anything. I also share my home home console with a buddy so we can have access to each others games. If I own a game like Sea of Thieves digitally, is there way to play with my son on the Xbox while I'm on the PC? It appears that I will have to either make my home console my actual home console again, which would cause me to lose access to all my friends games, or buy the game again.

Does anyone know if there is a way around this?

The answer is no because your share with your buddy made that your home console.

If your xbox was your home console then anyone can play it without having you signed in and also be on your pc.

Now you can be on your pc while your on your xbox signed in at the same time but when it comes to games you will find a different answer.

Yup, this only works if your son is playing on your home console and you are logged in elsewhere (i.e. PC, another Xbox). Regardless though, this "home" xbox feature is great for the sharing you are doing with a friend and/or not having to buy 2 copies of games to play across Xboxes (or Xbox and PC) in your home. Unfortunately, looks like you'll have to make a choice between sharing with your son or your friend. For folks not familiar, this only works with digital games if it wasn't obvious :). Especially nice with GamePass as for $10/mo, I effectively have 2 copies of the game (be it Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 4, etc.) to play with my son.

You'd think you would be able to do that but nope. Play Anywhere sounds great until you deal with the loopholes. If i buy a game, i should be able to play it on my Xbox and my PC at the same time if i want. End of story. Just another false promise.

But can play on Xbox and PC at the same time... did you read the thread? He has a friends account on his Xbox set as the Home for that account, if that weren't the case he'd be able to easily play on both.

To do it, just have his account own account as the Home Xbox and then his son could sign in on the console with a different tag, and he could sign in on PC with his own account.

You can not do that. MS never said it can be done as well.

Not sure where you are coming from on this. If I had my actual console set to be my home console l, like 95%+ of all Xbox gamers do, both my son and myself could play together off one copy.

Even if this weren't the case, it would still be a good feature. Buy a game once and be able to play in two places. There are a lot of people who double dip so they can play with one group of friends on console and group of friends on PC. A lot of streamers do this too. This is a feature that adds value for those people and it's not something that you have to pay extra for. Great feature.

As it is, it's an even better feature because most people will be able to play with their kid/friend/spouse with just one copy.
