My gut feeling is that this game is going to be a gem.

The word MMO might be a red flag but I echo your sentiment. This is the first time in years that Rare is making a game that sounds contemporary. Kameo and Viva Pinata were great, but they didn't belong to their era. Rare is best when they build on the contemporary trend like they did with Battletoads, DKC and Banjo Kazooie, and look at Sea of Thieves. The promise of player-generated MMO-like experience is what we've heard in recent years with Destiny, No Man's Sky, Need For Speed Rivals, etc. and though nobody actually nailed the concept it's up there in the air waiting to be nailed. Could Rare be the one that nails It? Maybe, I definitely hope so.

Yeah, I can't wait to see more of it, let alone play it. I really, really hope they hit their target for next year. I'm in need of a really good seafaring pirate adventure. That was the best part of Black Flag.

Xbox One's Sea of Thieves is "The Best Game That Rare Has Ever Made"
"Sea of Thieves is gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made."
by Eddie Makuch on September 12, 2015

Sea of Thieves, the upcoming Xbox One and PC game from esteemed UK studio Rare is "gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made." That's according to Microsoft executive Kudo Tsunodo, who talked more about the upcoming game in an interview with Official Xbox Magazine (via GamesRadar).

"I think with Sea of Thieves, what you're really going to see as you find out more about the game is that it's also about allowing people to create their own gaming memories" Tsunoda said. "It's about enabling people to create their own stories through limitless possibilities, and I think that's what Rare has always done a great job of historically; it is great at creating these super emotional memories and attachments that people have to games."

Tsunoda went to say that Sea of Thieves' use of user-generated content will be one of its biggest selling points.

"I think what you're gonna see in Sea of Thieves as we go forward and start talking more about the game is how [the studio is] enabling that kind of player-generated emotional and memory-driven stories that can happen within a game to happen within Sea of Thieves," he said. "And I think that's what Rare does well. That's what we’re going to keep having them doing in the future. And Sea of Thieves is gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made."

Rare recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Microsoft celebrated the milestone with Rare Replay, an Xbox One bundle featuring 30 games from the developer's history, including Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Kameo.

Sea of Thieves was announced at E3 2015 in June. The game is, as its name suggests, themed around pirates. It features a shared world which can be inhabited by multiple players. The announcement was described by the developer as "By far the most ambitious game Rare has ever created."

The trailer (above) showcased gameplay on a tropical island, and naval battles with groups of different players going head-to-head on ships in the sea. Sea of Thieves is a Window 10 and Xbox One exclusive. No release date has yet been revealed.

When I read that something just didn't sit right with me. Almost sound like project sparks.

Except that isn't really what he was talking about.

It seems to me that Microsoft is very keen to ensure its first-party studios have a purpose. So we’ve got 343 that handles Halo, The Coalition handling Gears of War. I’m going to start with Rare first, because that’s a studio that’s kind of in flux at the moment, in terms of what its role is going to be within Microsoft going forward. What sort of space do you see Rare occupying going forward?
First of all I wouldn’t say that rare is in flux in any way. I mean, I think it was a huge part of our keynote [at E3] - Maybe that’s the wrong word. I mean it’s coming out from very Kinect-heavy duties and maybe it’s going in a different direction now… You could see in the two Rare products that we talked about at E3 – Rare Replay and Sea of Thieves – that famous spirit of Rare and the amazing kind of character that you associate with Rare games really came through in both. And I think, for one, Rare Replay really shows off the 30 years of what Rare has done that makes games awesome. The funny part is, when you talk to people about Rare Replay, everybody has a different game that is their favourite that they remember, and that has created an emotional and personal memory for them – and that’s the amazing thing about Rare games.

Can you talk to us about what sort of form Sea of Thieves takes?

And I think that’s what Rare does well. That’s what we’re going to keep having them doing in the future. And Sea of Thieves is gonna be the best game that Rare has ever made.

Project Spark wasn't a game. I see no relation.

It would be exciting to see Rare relevant again. Especially since their style is sorely needed in the exclusive Xbox games department. Would like to see Spencer fix BBB next.

Well wait and see. All I can really say. Rare hasn't been the beacon of games I want to play in nearly a decade.

I'm not even taking Rare into consideration regarding my interest in this game. I don't care who is making it. The game looks like something different, it's about pirates, treasure, sailing, and adventure. We are sorely missing something like this. I just want it to be good.

I guess I'm the exact opposite. I don't care what it's about. It's a f***ing Rare game. And Microsoft is pushing it hard. This better be good.

And I'm the exact opposite of both of you. Rare has taken a dump on itself the past few years and disappointed me with almost every game they've released since coming under MS, and, the video of the game and the bits of gameplay I saw in the video give me zero excitement when compared to the dozens of other games coming out for the Xbox One. I hope I'm wrong and this game proves to be great. Right now I'm more curious about Recore than Pirates.

Microsoft is killing it with first party games and new ips. Glad they are focused more on first party now and less on third party.

I'm more aligned with this school of thought. It means very little to me who is making this game.

Still, I need to see a lot more.

Original story line, amazing graphics, grabbed by the ghoulies skeletons, pirates, palm trees, treasure chests, cutlasses, pirates--what's not to love? That's one shiny brown-eyed mullet.
