Ready Player One...

For some reason, this is the Retro character I'd like to see appear.

The evil MC Host of SMASH TV.

Seems like a movie full of video game references or nostalgia might include The Last Starfighter. Or maybe one flying car is enough with the Delorean.

Or admittedly, to much of this movie was cheesy even in the 80s.

The movie The Last Starfighter is referenced in the book.... And also in his book Armada, which has a very similar storyline.

Forgot to post this one last month when I was on mini-vacation.

Haven't watched a trailer yet and for some reason I have the need to watch this. Also don't really know what it's about. I saw the book for this and Armada at the book store. Friend read Armada and I think enjoyed it if I remember. Might pick that one up to start with.

I listened to both on audio book, while on long drives. They are both unabridged, and read fantastically by Wil Wheaton...whom is actually name dropped in RP1. Read some of the book, but then went back to the audio version, which I just enjoyed more. Armada is pretty decent, imo. RP1 is better, though. Armada is like The Last Star Fighter meets The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Saw the movie tonight. It was really good... VERY different than the book. I suppose this is where a lot of people will either like it more or less than its paper (or audiobook) counterpart. It was still awesome! It has all the heart, now with less geeky calories! If you loved the book, be prepared to separate the two, and know that a lot of scenes you may have hoped for, will not be there. That said, there are plenty of nods to those things, as well as some really, really well done action scenes. There is a particular scene with the second gate, that is just fantastic fan service. I liked it better than that same part of the book.

This movie also very much feels like a Cline/Spielberg hybrid... which is good because it is. The score is a complete throwback, and sometimes feels like you could be watching Back to the Future or ET. It's pretty self-aware, as is the whole movie.

I just really wish they had showed this movie in 3D in my town. I feel that some of the action in the Oasis kind of deserves it. At least see it on the biggest screen you can. It's a rush!

I forgot to mention the humor in the movie ranges from flat to really funny, but mostly funny.

Also, typical of a screen adaptation, the set-up for the story goes ultra quick, where the book took some time to explain the situation. The first gate/key is the complete opposite kind of situation, with adrenaline over intellect... only as in the books, there's always more to actually winning. They showed a lot of the first key in the trailers. It's just many more times awesome to watch as a whole. The sound design is pretty great in the movie! I wish I could have heard it in Atmos.

Jurassic Park would be slammed by today's critics. I'm absolutely sure of that. Speaking of, it's also a case of where a movie was deconstructed and rewritten for the screen by the book's author for Steven Spielberg. I'm not saying that this movie is on that level. What I am saying, is people can't just enjoy a movie anymore, so they wouldn't know a good action movie from a s***ty art-house film.

I have to respectfully disagree with you there. I'm sure i'll see this at some point but that Ars review actually is exactly what i was thinking it would be.

You are disagreeing with my opinion on a movie that you haven't seen...

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm saying that people are increasingly jaded since the early 2000s. This is probably the smartest Spielberg action movie that has ever been made. Is there a generic corporate baddie? Yes. The whole thing is a bit meta, since the book was written as sort of a tribute to 80s movies, just like the ones that Spielberg and Zemeckis made. I don't think the public could tolerate ET or Back to the Future these days.

No I'm not. I'm disagreeing with your comment that I quoted. I have no opinion on this movie although I'm not expecting much from it.
