I put more time to the game, & my feedback so far.

The combat is still s***, half the time, I either can’t see my cursor or the enemies. I don’t remember any other game I have such an issue with either.

It’s not a biggie in missions where you can restart from checkpoints, and surprising happened not often. But those random encounters are frustrating as you also cannot redo them if you failed. Due to poor save system that put you in preset locations when you load.

In most games, when I failed, it’s mostly felt always my fault, in RDR2 half the time, I feel it’s the poor combat mechanics, Made worst I cannot redo most failures so I can get better....

Did I mentioned the loading screen are extremely long, even the stupid DEAD screen.

Anyway. Now the good. It allow you to have a lot of things to do, and there is not collectibles littering the screens like other games. Every quest are unique experiences ( so far) and fairly interesting from narrative stand point, they either advance the story or make you understand a character more. There is freedom in sequence you do the quests.

If they have less slow-mo animations, better combat, and a simple save system where You can load where you left last saved ( apparently it’s something for reasons many open world games except Witcher 3 can’t do)

I do enjoy the game, when i adjust my expectation to approach it as as an interactive experience than a game, and as an interactive experience where you control the narrative, it is unmatch.

Isn't that pretty much all MP games now?
Nope. Very few MP games are pay to win...but RDR 2 is and doesn't even attempt to hide it.

I guess you could argue any game with microtransactions is a cash grab...I wouldn't argue against it. But very few are as obvious as RDR2.

Shallow is subjective I guess.

It’s strange. The slow pace of the game and amount of griefing that can go on just really don’t gel well I think. I’d be playing it more if any of friends we’re playing it but playing it solo isn’t really interesting.
When they make proper changes to the economy then i'll give it another go.

I figured I was a bit harsh on the gun combat in the game. Turned out much has to do with me doing it wrong.

In a typical 3rd person shooter, say tomb raider or gears, you aim ( usually left trigger) at the enemy you want to shoot, and well shoot (usually right trigger). But it doesn’t work like this in RDR2. Apparently left trigger lock an enemy(within range) and then you shoot ( right trigger). You do not need to aim at the enemy, just general direction.

After edited some settings ( turning auto aim to wide) and using left trigger as target lock ( instead of trying to aim with it) , the shooting becomes far easier, and by that extension more enjoyable. Still would prefer a traditional shooter control, but this is what it is.

Anyway, once I am not as obsessed to get as much mileage (process) in the game as I can, & approaching the game as a layback “MMO” experience, the game gets better. I still thinks this game is not for busy people with short game sessions, & I am not sure how it will go once my medical leave expelled end of the week, and have limited time for gaming, but for now, it’s been quite enjoyable.

Well. After the disaster that was GTA online when it launched they are rightly covering themselves this time around.
I am not betting on this. Rockstars have a lot of white knights/jounalists that overlook all the issues/negativity with their games.

I play 5-6 hours per day for 4 days & still at chapter 2. I think I did too much side activities, like bounties and treasure hunts.

I haven’t even entered a gunsmith.

I hate the hunting though, but it seems many upgrades required hunting.

Today we are starting to implement the first set of adjustments to the game including changes specifically geared towards creating a more balanced, fun and rewarding overall experience, across all modes and missions. These include:

  • Increasing the cash and gold payments across a number of different activities including Free Roam Missions, Free Roam Events, replays of A Land of Opportunities Missions, Showdown Series modes and more.
  • Reducing the prices of most weapons in the Wheeler, Rawson & Co Catalogue and Gunsmiths. For players that have already purchased weapons at the previous prices, we will automatically deposit the difference to player balances starting today - please look for an alert message the next time you log in to the Red Dead Online Beta to notify you of this change, refunds may take up until December 10th to reach all players.
  • Balancing the values of select pelts, skins and fish as well as horse reviver and pamphlets.
Of course our efforts to improve and balance the Red Dead Online Beta will continue. We are conscious of and still evaluating an assortment of further adjustments based on feedback from the community. We are currently working on fixes for some persistent bugs that are causing some players to be kicked from sessions, and we aim to have fixes for these live next week. We will also continue to review all the feedback and suggestions so please keep them coming to reddeadonline.com/feedback.

As an added thank you for playing and helping us through the beta period, we're also awarding everyone that joined in to play the Red Dead Online Beta at any point through midnight PST today with a gift of RDO$250 and 15 Gold Bars. Gifts should start arriving today and will hit all eligible players by Friday, December 14th.

Once again, we want to thank everyone for playing the Red Dead Online Beta and sharing their experiences so far with us. There’s still lots more to come so please stay tuned!

I played for nearly 60 hours and I only got to chapter 3. I burned myself out too quickly doing side missions and hunting for upgrades. You have to do an insane amount of hunting if you want to get all of the items and outfits from the trapper.

Is there an area in the menus anywhere that tells you how much time you've actually spent playing?

Nope. Xbox owners can see from the Games hub page on the dash board but that will include everything including time spent on the main menu/ loading screen/ pause menus rather than just playtime

I'm at the beginning of Chapter 4 but haven't played the game in about a week. It has an incredibly well crafted world but geese I can’t remember another game that has made me yawn so much while playing. It’s like yeah, the game is heavily steeped in realism but that doesn’t always translate into videogame fun.

Don’t get me wrong the missions themselves are a lot of fun and I really like how shooting feels I just feel like there isn’t enough of it, way too much riding around on the horse. I’ll get back to it at some point but for now its time for this buckaroo to mosey on out into the sunset of other games.

I find myself going into the cinematic mode a lot when horseback riding and browse my phone

It has the worst 'fast travel in a game I have seen. At least a few hours were spent riding random strangers or coaches to some towns, which could be opposite my destination.

Ths fishing & hunting is over complicated, & not help by the poor save system. If these were simplified, the side games would have been more enjoyable by more people IMO.

There was an area where I need to jump in a cave, & I missed the jump & died, I was 'teleported' to some random followed by a dreadfully long unskippable 'revive scene", have to spend 10 mins to get back to where I was, jumped & failed again! Finally manages to jump the 3rd time.

Most decent games will have a checkpoint near where you died, but not RDR2.

Anyway, I am finally in Chapter 3. The sequences from the last mission of chapter 2 to start of chapter 3 are quite ridiculous, & I clocked about an hour before I was able to save & went to bed.

Yet they don't give any examples of the changes. How much have they increased payouts and reduced prices?

I have to take a break from this game. A bit of burnout, & besides, I am returning to work tomorrow, after almost one month of sick leave, so my game time will be only 2-3 hours max weekdays now.

Anyway, I find it refreshing the game makes you feel you are just a member part of a group, instead of the key member let alone sole savior like many games.

I know I have been very critical of the gameplay, but I think they did a great job to make every mission feel unique, less repetitive, from a story point. Every mission feels like an episode of a TV show.

Finally got to Chapter Six the other night.

Broke John out of prison, and kicked out Herr Strauss from the camp as well. Oh yeah, also killed Cornwall too. Dutch has lost his mind

I'm slowly working on this. Like a meal that I'm too full for but will graze until finished. I'll do 1 or 2 story missions every other day. I'm ok with that pace. Maybe during the weekends, I'll do more.

Finally finished the game. Definitely a masterpiece and benchmark for years to come. 2018 has been a great year for gaming for me. Bring on 2019.
