Rumour: Sony Ceased Research on PlayStation 5

http://nzgamer.com/news/8296/rumour-sony-ceased-research-on-playstation-5.html

PlayStation 4 hasn't even been out for a year, but Sony was apparently already looking into PlayStation 5 - at least according to reports that this is no longer the case.

According to Xinhuaxia News, Sony has given up development research into PlayStation 5 due to the company's financial woes and increasing power and popularity of smartphones and tablets.

"There is already information that Sony has abandoned production research for PlayStation 5," explains the report. "As smartphones and tablet PCs become more powerful, the need for home consoles diminishes. The profit Sony can bring in with consoles is getting smaller and smaller."

This is strictly a rumour at this stage, with no sources cited by Xinhuaxia, but with PlayStation's release history, a PlayStation 5 shouldn't be expected before 2020. With rapid advances in smartphone and smart TV technology, it's plausible that by that time, a dedicated home console would struggle.

This follows the announcement of big deficits for Sony, particularly in the smartphone sector. In July, Sony lowered forecast sales for this fiscal year from 50 million to 43 million units, and in September, CEO Kazuo Hirai said that the company would cut 15% of its smartphone workforce.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony is planning to cut those forecasts even further, and reduce its presence in some markets, like China.

If true, they probably thought the lifespan of the now current gen consoles was going to be short. Since Sony has an on paper technological lead over Microsoft's console, there's no reason to rush into anything, especially if you have financial issues.

I hope this is not true. I also can not see mobile platforms becoming a primary gaming device in the next 6 years. These business analysts can't seem to tell the difference between people to buy consoles and pc for serious gaming and those that play candy crush on their phones. Remember that nobody was going to buy the current gen consoles because of mobile devices. Look what happened there.
The industry will change over time, I've no doubt about that, and it will change for the worst if Sony don't bring something new to the table, but this constant talk of threat from tablets and smartphones is silly.

Hopefully this isn't true. We all heard how this generation consoles were going to die off and yet there are strong sales numbers for the XB1 and amazingly strong numbers for the PS4. I imagine in 2049 we'll be seeing stories that Apple's Sony division is rumored to be cancelling work on the iPlay 17 because implanted neurocomputer interfaces are making video games obsolete, while MicroSamsung is still promising that Windows Phone XVIII will finally get 10% market share.

am I the only one to find that hilarious ? Smartphones and Tablets have never been more powerful and yet home consoles are selling by the crap-tonne world wide.

"With rapid advances blah blah blah.." Same s*** different gen.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner Johnny.

Exactly, Mobile devices has their market for gaming but it is not the same as consoles or PC's. I mean we saw these tablets at CES that could run games like Skyrim at medium settings, great, but how long till that hardware is obsolete and no longer runs the games being made ? As fast as the tech in mobil devices advances the shorter the life span of the individual hardware, which makes it a non-viable platform for serious gamers.

The ps4 was successful with basically off the shelf PC parts and a "games" direction, the ps5 will probably repeat that formula, I just hope its powerful this time around. I don't see the need for a ton of research for an off the shelf PC like console, maybe their research with ps4 will hopefully expand to its successors. Give me ps5 will close to modern specs and I'll be happy, no more med level gaming laptop crap.

They still need plenty of R&D though. It is not like these off-the-shelf parts are stuck in as they are from the shelf. They are custom, not just on each individual piece level but how they interact with each other.

Sure, I understand that.

As for you hope, it will likely be true. In 5-6 years time the top end cards of today like the 780ti or 290x will be around the mid tier level. But will you actually consider that powerful in 5-6 years time ? most likely not. I assume you mean todays top level specs since the future top level specs will be to costly for home console.

Yeah just closer to a more modern machine, no way in hell we'll get a top tier machine, but just something decent by comparison to ps4. I'd pay $500 for $100 more towards gaming, or even $50. Might not make a huge difference, but anything is better than what we have.

Meh. The idea that Sony wouldn't follow up on one of their most successful products is not very believable.

I'm going to close this, since it runs contrary to reason, and there's no substantiation offered at all.
