Still crazy to me that Majora's Mask only sold half of what Ocarina of Time did, despite being a very comparable game in my opinion. Of course OoT is better, but Majora's Mask was fantastic.

Saw another tweet saying Sony sold more PS4's in 2018 than Nintendo did Switch by about 300k.

It's crazy when people keep saying we'll be doing online only streaming consoles soon, PS4 has sold over 90 million consoles but the amount of PS+ subscribers is far less than half of that at 36 million. That 36 million number is impressive and it's bringing in a lot of money but when the majority of your customers aren't willing to pay for an online service what makes anyone think the industry will be ready to move to an online only console anytime soon?

So PSN alone brought in more money for Sony than all of Nintendo made last year and all of MS's gaming division revenue brought in for MS, that's just PSN that's not including hardware and physical game sales, that's crazy.

Cool but 10 cents still dwarf Sony & all other game companies, & gaming isn't even their core business.

Is that good or bad?

Yep.

I dunno. I hear the 41 million number of Xbox One's sold is false and that we should hear about what they really sold at E3. That's just rumor right now so take it with a grain of salt.

Probably false, I doubt they (or anyone in their position) would announce what they've actually sold, when you are really far behind you generally focus on numbers that you can sort of fudge to paint your product in the best possible light. If they aren't telling investors exactly how many they aren't going to announce it at a trade show. Even if it's not 41 it's not likely much more.

If it was only 41 by now, that means it sold 900k in the past year.

I disagree. I think it could be more - thats just me.

If they are going to announce their numbers they would just do it. No point in saving it for some big stage like the number is going to blow anyone away.

I don't think they will announce the number either. First, they already said they don't anymore. Secondly, why announce a number that is nearly half as much as the competitor?

Thats all fine and dandy for this gen but next gen, hardware sold will fade to the back and software and services will take the lead. Hardware will still matter of course, but I dont think it'll be the be-all-end-all it typically has been.

It really isnt now, now that I think about it.

Being that PSN alone brought in more than all of MS's gaming division it shows that the two go hand in hand, the more hardware you have the more you'll bring in through online/services etc. As long as you are making money that's all that really matters but selling hardware is the gateway to the rest of it. I just hope first party devs don't adopt the EA/2K mindset of launching a fairly barebones game and continually adding small things and charging extra for them. I know 3rd parties are unlikely to stop doing that but first party gets to charge for online play and gets a cut of every game sold etc so they have other sources of revenue.

Hmmm, makes one wonder how the live ap will work on other platforms, will you need an Xbox to stream the games you own or simply just own them and stream it via there servers to mobile/switch? How will those numbers be taken into account? Feels like next gen will be another transitioning period, by extension of the current gen, in how the consumer reacts to such a shift.
