SWD Tech Games, creators of the upcoming game Pixel Noir, have added Secret of Mana composer, Hiroki Kikuta, as the composer to their team. Secret of Mana’s soundtrack is one of the most memorable and well received JRPG soundtracks of all time. What Kikuta was able to do with the SNES’s sound system was nothing short of amazing. It’s great to see someone with such an esteemed background working with indie developers on their projects.

As the game’s title suggests, Pixel Noir is a throwback to the SNES era games with it’s top-down/3/4’s style camera angle and pixel graphics. Pinnacle City is overrun with scum and you’re the city’s cheapest private eye. You’ll take on jobs from as lowly as finding a kitten to solving a murder. Along the way you’ll come face to face with all that is bad with Pinnacle City. Are you scum like most of the city or are you going to make a difference?

Pinnacle City in Pixel Noir is highly interactive. There’s always something explore further in each location. The more explore, the more items and weapons you’ll find. Exploring the city to it’s fullest is the key. Of course, that exploration will be met with Vanguard Militia, sewers monsters, and back alley thugs that you’ll have to rid the city of. Don’t run away though as they’re your source for leveling up! What would an RPG be without leveling up?

What every great RPG game does best are the boss battles and Pixel Noir is no different. You’ll need to make sure your weapon levels are up to the task of these boss battles or you’ll be taken out rather quick. Pixel Noir has an expansive weapons upgrade system that should be taken advantage of before you attempt to fight a boss. Weapon choice before the battle is key and you don’t want to bring a slingshot to a gunfight.

Pixel Noir captures the SNES era as much as any other recent gen game that I’ve seen. It’s coming out for the PC, Mac, PS4 and Vita with an expected release date of November 2016. The game has already met its initial goal and there’s 19 days remaining. A $10 nets you a copy of the game. With what I’ve seen of the game thus far, and the addition of Hiroki Kikuta as the composure, my $10 is locked in.

You can play the demo on a PC, or Mac, right now and check it out for yourself!. Click here to download it.
