A new teaser countdown from Square Enix promises big Tomb Raider news tomorrow, but a quick HTML check will give it to you right now: Shadow of the Tomb Raider is coming out this September.

Head to the official Tomb Raider website and you’ll see a message promising an announcement on March 15, 2018 at 6am PT. Inspect the HTML, however, and you’ll see the announcement early:

“tagline”:”Shadow of The Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story. Available September 14th 2018"
If this is an accident, it’s not the first time. In October 2016, a Redditor spotted the name of Lara Croft’s next adventure because it was on the laptop of someone next to him on the subway.

At the time, we confirmed with our own sources that Shadow of the Tomb Raider was indeed the next game in the series. This one, as we reported then, is developed by Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Thief (2014), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The previously two games were made at the San Francisco, California-based Crystal Dynamics, which is now working on an Avengers game. Eidos Montreal is also entering the Marvel universe with a Guardians of the Galaxygame that has not yet been announced.

We’ve heard that Square invited some reporters to see the game in Montreal recently, so expect a wave of new previews when the official announcement hits tomorrow.

I'm hoping for more varied locations this time...hopefully no snow at all. I'd also like to see vehicles like ATVs and boats being used.

Well at least they didn't abandon this franchise mid story like they're doing with Deus Ex.

Yeah, I definitely got my fill of snowy locations in Rise. Vehicles would be cool, a dirtbike would be friggin' shweet.

Should be good. Rise of the Tomb Raider was a great game. Excited to see what's next.

Agreed, I enjoyed it a lot even if I did only play it the one time. I'm basically gonna be a fan of any game that has heavy bow & arrow use though, haha...

Hell yeah...might be my game of the year:

Square Enix has formally announced Shadow of the Tomb Raider
which will be released on September 14 for PC, Xbox One and PS4 (including PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions). The third in the rebooted Tomb Raider series will "deliver Lara Croft's defining moment", according to a press release.

Not much about the game - which is reportedly being developed by Eidos Montreal, rather than reboot creator Crystal Dynamics - is given away in the trailer but there's a heavy theme of eclipses and darkness. A full reveal will arrive on April 27.

The Tomb Raider website is currently indicating that a "puzzle" will be coming for players to solve on Monday. The press release says that fans will be able to meet developers and play the game at three reveal events around the world - the puzzle is quite probably the entry mechanic to get an invite.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider might be a new announcement, but we've known about it for a while now. The title leaked back in 2016, it was teased again last year, and the release date and platforms emerged yesterday. The full reveal will likely be the "major event" teased previously.

In other Tomb Raider news, the new Lara Croft film - based on the first game in the reboot franchise - is on its way. Sadly, while the movie "may directly lift many elements from the excellent 2013 video game reboot, but it disappointingly chooses not to adapt what made Lara an interesting and deep character."

Maybe Play Anywhere?

Extremely disappointing trailer, but I'm glad to see a release date and the location the game will be set in at least.

Haven't even played the second game yet although I did enjoy the first.
If you enjoyed the first you will really enjoy this one even more. You will feel right at home playing it but it will be bigger, more fine tuned, more gorgeous and more in depth in upgrades

I'll be interested to see what a new studio does with the groundwork Crystal Dynamics laid out. It seems a little weird to announce the game and show a little teaser for a full reveal that is over a month away though...

Two others saying the first is better. Oh dear I've made a mistake with GT Sport.

They must just want to get out ahead of leaks that seem to be happening left and right in the industry these days.

If you bought it you made a mistake, great looking game but sim racers are BOOORRRIIIINNNGGG lol.

Nah I like sim racers. Just disappointed it didn't have the regular single player campaign stuff from before.

Anywhosen I'll have to keep an eye out for a decent Steam sale for Tomb Raider 2 then.

Rise wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous game, it's not bad but it's not great either.
Really?

The game is an amazing experience.

The way you make it sound, it's barely worth playing. It makes me question your taste, and your agenda.

The game is amazingly produced, and makes for brilliant moments that are exciting. The rest of the game, is what you make of it.

If you think it's boring, you're probably boring yourself.

Agenda? it's a game, one that I played on a Pro not an Xbox so don't give me any anti xbox BS either lol. It doesn't live up to the previous one in any way, the story wasn't as engaging and it wasn't anywhere near as memorable. I'm not the only one who feels this way either, as I said it's not a bad game it's just not all that good either, it's an average experience with high production values.

I liked Rise far more than the previous game because I felt it had more variety overall. I don't even remember the stories for either of the last 2 games for that to even be a deciding factor.

I still need to get around to playing the second game (Rise). I've had it on my shelf for what seems like a year. I played a couple hours, then stopped, with the intention of getting back to it eventually.

You get $10 in rewards points for pre-ordering at Best Buy.

Worst cover box ever.
