Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Finally finished the campaign! Definitely good times, the best things about the game continued to be the graphics and setting. Really fun to just explore. Story was decent and combat was just good enough.

I’m still planning on trading it in for another game. With so much of the game revolving around exploring and puzzles, once you’ve done it once there’s not a big drive to do it again.

8/10 from me.

For comparison I gave TR 2013 a 9.5/10, with my only complaint being it just needed more tombs to explore. Rise I gave a 7/10 because of the boring story, the collectathon gameplay, and the terrible setting.

I really like having the environmental and puzzle difficulty on hard. It reminds me so much of the originals where you didn't know how to get out of an area or be shown how to solve the puzzle like most games do these days.

Yeah, I like that they included that option. They're doing something similar in AC: Odyssey, too. I'm glad. How can you feel like an explorer, having a mysterious adventure and making discoveries, if the game is constantly holding your hand and pointing your nose to exactly what you need to do next?

I hope more games will have those kind of options in the future.

i am pretty disappointed in the performance of this game on xbox one X, too many frame drops and screen tearing in some scenes... wish they had dynamic resolution for those moments

No screen tearing here, and I am half way through. But I have had some animation issues where Lara is stuck in a weird animation and walks backwards.

I definitely saw some screen tearing in my play through.

As much as I liked the game, started TR 2013 again and man it’s so much better

Something about the responsiveness / intuitiveness of the shooting controls feels off to me. Not crazy far into the game, just got to Paititi, but I'd say it's my least favorite of the 3 and I'd say it definitely feels like eidos Montreal is the B-team....

I've seen several others elsewhere mention it, as did Digital Foundry in their analysis video. I've seen a few framerate drops on the Pro, but haven't seen any issues with v-sync so far at 35% completion.

It's the input lag and the last game had it pretty bad as well. Running in high framerate mode alleviates it somewhat, but there's no excuse for it being there in the first place.

Also when you're shooting the camera angle looks weird. The camera is to far to Lara's side, rather than over her shoulder so it makes the perspective of how she's holding the weapons not line up with where she is shooting... I'm not really feelin' this one, def worst of the 3 imo, may not even finish it...

I haven't really noticed any changes to the camera angles between the game myself. I'm constantly debating back and forth whether or not I like this game better or the previous one. I'm probably 60% through the game so far and I really like it other than the sloppy aiming the game has. The story doesn't seem very interesting, but I've never played any of these games for the story anyway.

Yeah TR 2013 is by far the best of the trilogy for me, but it’s a tough call between Rise and Shadow. I think Shadow is the better game, but Rise is more replayable.

Played through the xbox one version of TR 2013 before playing Rise and imo the sequel is a much better gamer in all regards; story, gameplay, replayability, graphics etc.
I do like the mesoamerikan setting much more than what we had in Rise so I'm optimistic that I'll like this more.

Oh yeah, gonna have to agree to disagree on that one lol. Much improved graphics for sure, but I thought the story in Rise was meh, the gameplay was too much of a collectathon, and the setting was the worst of the trilogy. I also thought the pacing was terrible. The opening hour was amazing though I’ll give the game that!

I am back from my 2 weeks holiday. Other than backache from trying to carry my heavy luggauge up a stairs, & some serious sunburn, I am intact.

Hope to finally continue this game. So much great game coming, so little time.

Okay, I played up to the first base camp, & here are my feedback so far. I don't know what they did, the graphic seems to get a bump, especially Lara skin,. which was a complaint in pre-release.

Lara seems a bit less skinny with a wider chest compare to previous ones, for reasons. Environment wise, I think its a small improvement over rise, but I feel lighting & contrast can be better, especially in darker areas, which sometimes looks flat. Some play with Ambient occlusion & some form of post-process contrast could work. It's still a good looking game, but a bit of missed opportunity IMO.

Gameplay wise, so far, I have not updated any skill, but feels like rising. I have not seen any significant improvement expect the white lines are less obvious (in default normal). Repelling is new, otherwise, no noticeable new skill ( I am early in the game though)

Combat is easier with stealth, & in the only full-on combat, I admitted to dying a couple of times.

Puzzle-wise, there is only one so far, & it's pretty straightforward.

So far I am enjoying it. More impression as I have more progress.

I'm struggling to find motivation to continue playing this game. Rented it from gamefly & would need to return soon to get Blops4. Am seriously considering sending it back unfinished (something I rarely do with gamefly rentals). I'm on a 2nd playthrough of spider-man ps4 and find myself wanting to continue that rather than finish this game for the first time. Worst in the series imo for sure...

After playing this game, I have a hard time even thinking about goi going back to Spiderman :(

I played until the first town, & did a bit of backtracks. While I am unsure why some people do not enjoy this version compare to the other 2, I have some theories.

The previous 2 are more action oriented, especially 2013, which is very action focus, with lots of big battles as well as indiana Jones style escape sequences, but far less puzzles. It was a main complains by long term fans that the reboot was too combatr fcous, too little puzzle.

With each sequels, there are less combat, & action sequences & more puzzles. Shadow has (so far) far less combat & action sequences than the previous, but the puzzle levels & tomb are more beefy.

This may pleased long term fans, but may not please new fans that expect more actions. I guess this is the man disparity about how enjoyable the game is. But I could be wrong.

For me, I enjoy the game a lot, as I enjoy puzzles & exploration & the details in this game blows the previous ones. Its too early to make a full comparison with the others in the reboot series. Story wise, so far, it seems fair mehish. Delivering story & pacing it, is a storytelling skill, & so far, I don't think the game has nailed it. There seems to be a lack of urgency dispite supposely apocalypse danger.

I'm nearing the end, but I liked the last game a lot more than this one. The best part of this game is the environment for me.
