Shenmue Series

I don't think we need outside confirmation to know that they were indeed talking to each other about Shenmue at some point in time. That is a verifiable fact.

Postmortem and all that jazz.

As for making the game, Sega owns the license, that is true. That doesn't mean they can't license it out to third party developers to handle and they don't seem to be in a hurry to let anyone else take a crack at the IP. Highly doubtful they'd let ANYONE else but him touch the IP.

I understand that, but that it was I mean as talking to him to make the game is useless. Sega owns the IP, so getting together to discuss what a game might be like is nothing more than that.

.

What if Shenmue was actually a good game?

It wasn't a big hit. It was however an amazing experience for the time it was released..and yes it was good. Much better than most games that seem to be able to get sequels these days.

Sometimes I wonder when people played this game...and if they actually finished it.o_O

The story was finished years ago so in that sense Yu is not needed.

The fact they are doing a post mortem is not a good sign and the fact its Cerny is nothing. They are very good friends from both being at SEGA and he has acted as Yu's translator several times over the years.

Also worth pointing out that Yu himself said it would probably only sell around 100k now days. Not the best way to advertise and he is still at work on a motion fighter for Kinect/PS camera.

Unless you really think they would be having a serious talk about it in public and pose for a photo to confirm it?

Exactly. Those types of games have never really sold well on Xbox anyways. Shenmue is a treasure in a select few's hearts, but the problem is people think just because it was important to them that everybody wants it or would scoop it up. I guarantee if you polled Xbox players randomly only a few would say they even knew what Shenmue was or that they would purchase it. I played it on Dreamcast, but trust me, if the game was a huge hit or moneymaker, there would have been tons of sequels by now.
Think about this: practically no one in the west had even heard of Final Fantasy before FF VII, and that was a huge hit! Yes, FF VI was on SNES (called FF III here), but it wasn't this big thing til the PS1, 6 games later than it started.

I realize that most investors don't see things this way, though. Quite the shame, actually. A good game with good media exposure will sell regardless of it's franchise selling history, IMO. When a game has as much buzz as this or Psychonauts, it only fuels it... even if nostalgia alone is clearly not enough. (See Nights 2 or whatever the Wii one was called)

There was a solid fighting game mechanic by the guy who made the VF series. A fighting game with RPG progression!

It is really just too bad that there wasn't more of it, actually. That would be my only gripe with the game. I think the fighting should come earlier, and more frequent in those games. II was better, in that regard.

Most likely for the better. Never really understood what make this game so great. There is a reason why we never saw a third version because the game never sells.

Are you serious Sega?!?

Registration cancelled because registrant did not file an acceptable declaration under Section 8

and

Section 8 of the Trademark Act applies to “continued use” and “excusable nonuse” of registered marks, giving trademark holders a window to prove that it is either still using the mark in question or has a good excuse for not using it.

I'm mad at Sega. This is the dumbest $#%& they've done or neglected to do yet!

That game sucked

f*** every last one of you who does not respect the Shenmue.

I remember reading that someone at Sony talked about picking the series up. At least I think I read something like that.

Anyway, now would be a great time to swoop in.

Just found this lol ... I sure hope SONY picked it up.

For March's Game Developers Conference 2014, we're announcing one of the most exciting game postmortems yet.

Yu Suzuki, the influential Japanese game designer famously known for his work at Sega, will be delivering a Classic Game Postmortem on the iconic Dreamcast gameShenmue. Mark Cerny, game designer and lead system architect for PlayStation 4 will be on-hand to translate Suzuki's presentation into English for the audience.

Played the first one. Certainly didn't find anything amazing about it. At least, nothing that its reputation would have you believe.

Shenmue was all right, I bought it right when it came out, but I think it's a bit overrated or people remember it better than it really was. I think that cult following is really a small number of people anymore.

Or some people simply enjoyed the journey more than you did. There was certainly nothing else like it on DC and PS2 at the time.

Also, nothing that came out until now really gave me the feeling I had when exploring in Shenmue the first time and finishing it. Maybe the first time I played the first quarter of Oblivion came close. But that feeling only lasted for the first quarter of what ended up to be 230+ hrs.

I love stories that suck you in.

Shenmue lacked in game mechanics, but was well ahead of its time in just about every other way. I'd love to see this game return and done right.

I guess. I just think it's funny all the cult Shenmue fans that every time something remotely Shenmue related comes up they always scream, "Bring this back, it would do so well on Xbox!" They act like it's such a loved game by the masses. Uh, no, hardly anybody even knows what it is & no, it wouldn't sell well on Xbox in this day & age. I think just because somebody loved something so much they think it was more popular than it was. I had Shenmue & heck, there's about 20 Dreamcast games I absolutely loved that it would be awesome if they brought them back, but I'm realistic enough to know it's not worth the investment to bring them back because they aren't really that popular. Ubisoft has trouble enough selling an established brand like Rayman Legends on Xbox that is a superb quality game let alone Sega trying to bring something like Shenmue back. lol.

To me, it's like, let it rest for what it was, a good Dreamcast game that had a cult following. It's like when I hear this stupid talks of movies they are remaking or doing sequels to. Beetlejuice 2 now? Just let it rest & don't ruin it like they did Willy Wonka back in the day.

I laugh when I see people claim that.

Most Shenmue fans know its a cult game. Now yes some delude themselves and claim it would be a massive success if it was released on PS4 but most would just like to finish the story even if its as a digital release over a few games.

See to me that makes zero sense.

It's not about what other people want. *I* enjoyed the game and *I* want part 3. People are asking for what they want, simple as that. Nobody likes it because: they think the masses want it. They just want Shenmue 3 because they played 1 and 2 and the story ended unfinished with new developments and a cliffhanger.

Why hate on it for the simple fact that others like it that much. If you don't want it, don't pay it no mind.

I watched The Descend. And it ended f&*^ing perfectly. I love it. The Descend 2 has been released, continuing the story. I'm not gonna watch it but I'm not gonna hate on the fact others want sequels or a remake of the original.
