Sony is currently planning a new version of the PS4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, developer sources tell Kotaku.

We don’t know whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade or if they’ll have to buy an entirely new device to benefit from this power boost, but from what we hear, Sony has started briefing developers.

Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this ‘PS4.5’ will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the ‘PS4K’ while telling me about the device.

In layman’s terms, 4K resolution is around four times the pixel size of 1080p, which is the current standard for games on PlayStation 4 and competing consoles. The current PS4 can output 4K photos and videos, but cannot support 4K resolutions for games. With this upgrade, it would. Besides resolution, developers would have an opportunity to push more effects and other graphical tweaks to make their games look better, thanks to the new GPU.

A more powerful PS4 would also allow the machine to be more competitive with PCs in the world of virtual reality. With a higher-end GPU, the PS4 could more easily match up against the more expensive Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets, which are designed to work with powerful PCs.

When contacted yesterday about this report, Sony declined to comment. “We can’t comment on rumors or speculation,” a spokesperson said in an e-mail.

The circle of people who knew about this upgraded PS4 was small until recently. I first heard about the device from one trusted source, then two.Kotaku’s Jason Schreier and Stephen Totilo were also able to independently verify the existence of these hardware plans with their own developer sources, although some of the details have been vague; one source told us that the device felt “exploratory” and that it may not even be released this year.

We’ve also heard that at this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Sony held meetings with developers about the hardware and how it would work. As we were chasing down this story, coincidentally,Kotaku UK EIC Keza MacDonald overheard some developers casually talking about the machine while on line at GDC. They mentioned the name ‘PS4.5’ and discussed its increased horsepower, mentioning both 4K resolution and PlayStation VR.

Our sources aren’t sure when this upgraded machine will ship to consumers, nor how much it will cost. The PS4’s price dropped from $400 to $350 last fall, and one source indicated that this new ‘PS4.5’ could let Sony keep selling PS4 hardware at a higher profit margin for $400.

There are still lots of big questions surrounding the device. Will Sony allow people to trade in their existing PS4s to buy the new machine? How will developers cope with releasing games on multiple types of hardware? Could some games only support PS4.5, as is the case with the New Nintendo 3DS? When this PS4 goes on sale, will Sony continue to sell old PS4 hardware at a lower price? How can Sony manage all this without fragmenting the market?

Right now, we don’t have the answer to those questions.

The PS4.5 may not be alone, either.

I’ve heard whispers about an upgraded Xbox One for a while now, and Microsoft has been public about the possibility. At a press briefing earlier this month, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted to journalists that his company has been exploring the possibility of evolving hardware. “We look at these other ecosystems out there like mobile, tablet and PC,” Spencer told the assembled press, as reported by Polygon, “and we see that they have a very continuous evolution cycle in hardware, whereas between console generations most of the evolution is making it cheaper and potentially making it smaller.”

Spencer later walked back those comments while speaking on the Major Nelson podcast, pouring some water on the idea of a customizable, PC-like Xbox. “Am I going to break open my console and start upgrading individual pieces of my console? That’s not our plan,” he said. “There is something special about what happens with a console. You buy an appliance-like device; you plug it into your TV; it works when you plug it in. It’s not like I’m going to ship a screwdriver set with every console that comes out.”

Plans are always changing, and some of the details we’ve heard are fuzzy, but one thing has become clear: Sony is exploring the possibility of releasing a more powerful console way before the PlayStation 5. With both Sony and Microsoft possibly entering new territory, and Nintendo’s NX on the way, this should be an exciting year for gaming hardware no matter what comes next.

I'm all for it if true. I'd rather have a hardware upgrade than a revised smaller console or next generic game bundled console. Lots of gamers buy multiple versions of the same console each gen. I know I bought a Halo themed 360, CoD2 themed console and an 360 slim last gen. Give me a hardware upgrade over a new skin anyday.

4K? That PS4.5 is going to cost a solid grand minimum. You can't change the hardware after the fact anyways. It'll ruin the good sales of the current consoles, and the current gen consoles are still selling like hotcakes. Don't fix what isn't broken.

I just don't see the huge, mass demand for it right now. Early adopters of VR are going to have a high end PC anyway. If VR even goes mainstream, I would think that would be some time.

I mean, it could happen. Although I just don't see the push.

I'm all for it if it allows current PS4 owners to upgrade at a discounted promo price and allows Destiny 2 to run @ 60 fps.

‘PLAYSTATION 4’ INCREMENTAL UPGRADE TO ‘PS 4.5’ TO ACCOMMODATE 4K GRAPHICS GAMING RESOLUTION [RUMORS]
It looks like Sony is going to develop a PlayStation console upgrade to their graphics processor for the current platform, according to Kotaku. In this case, it would be deemed more of an incremental upgrade to what currently exists on the market and coined a “PlayStation 4.5.”

In the past, there was a concern voiced by YouTuber ReviewTechUSA regarding the serious concern of PlayStation going the route the way the Sega Genesis did with varying, upgradable components that wound up being problematic, i.e. Sega CD and Sega 32X console upgrades.

Reason being was the thought that this could split the consumer base and segregating them via upgradable hardware. In times past, when this was done through Sega, it put developers in a bind as they were torn between developing a new game for the already large, existing gamer base or creating it for the upgraded version.

Then, there is the thought of creating two versions of the same game which can be quite a mess.

Now, the Sony PlayStation is going to accommodate 4K resolution and Sony is already “briefing the developers,” according to Kotaku. On top of that, another feature being upgraded is the processing power for game enhancement regarding the PlayStation VR.

That being said, if you take a look at a recent report by EuroGamer, there is a question left up in the air about the “external processing unit” for the PlayStation VR console. The only information provided is what it could NOT do via a Sony presentation by Chris Norden, the senior staff engineer.

  • It provides no extra GPU or CPU power.
  • It’s not any form of PS4 expansion or upgrade.
  • It’s not directly accessible by the developer in any way – code cannot be written to it.
The PlayStation staff member from Sony emphasized the lack of extra GPU and CPU power and doesn’t consider it any kind of upgrade or expansion.

Yet, the aforementioned “PS 4.5” upgrade is reported to do that very thing. So, one can ascertaine that the external processing unit and the reportedly developing upgrade aren’t one in the same.

Details of the tasks of the external processor for the PlayStation VR are provided at Eurogamer.

To put it simply, current resolution output for the Sony PlayStation 4K pictures and videos work fine. But for gaming, that’s a different animal and the rumored PS4 console upgrade could provide it.

The Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week featured meetings held by Sony regarding this very PlayStation 4 console upgrade and the term “PS 4.5” emerged in online conversations. The content of the conversations include the attributes for the “PlayStation 4.5.”

“They mentioned the name ‘PS4.5’ and discussed its increased horsepower, mentioning both 4K resolution and PlayStation VR.”

The PlayStation upgrade for the console still isn’t clear on the question regarding the segregation of incremental platforming, considering there’s not much information addressing those questions. Xbox One, however, addressed this and has gone on record to detail how it would be in favor of upgrading in such a fashion because there have been “whispers,” according to Kotaku, about the Xbox console getting incremental upgrades as well.

Sniper Elite developer CEO Jason Kingsley gave his take on how this could be pulled off successfully, according to Gaming Bolt.

“I don’t think anybody actually knows [what Microsoft has planned]. Yes, you will have to make the game to work on the existing, let’s call it lower-spec Xbox. You would also, depending on how the operating system works, have to anticipate the upgrade… We’re already working on Xbox One titles and we don’t know if there is another one coming. I guess at some stage we might know.”

Does it sound like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles would, if this venture pans out, take on the similar upgradable characteristics of a PC? Will these incremental upgrades be good for gamers given the current forecast?

This sounds like something directly aimed at VR, reminds me of a certain other peripheral. If its what I think it is, I wonder does it eliminate the external processor unit for the headset. :surprise:

Discount? Out of the goodness of their corporate hearts maybe...

You absolutely can, it just cannot be worse than what the games are currently designed for. I am betting that whatever machines they are working on will run all currently PS4 and Xbox One games.

Guys there's no "gen" anymore. It's goner. If Sony is doing the same, we are very likely to see annual/bi-annual release of video game consoles.

But any game designed for the PS4.5 won't work on the PS4. The PS4 can't be forwards compatible. If the PS4.5 ends up a big hit, the PS4 will get the short end of the stick.

Can't you just design everything with the ps4 in mind, then dial up the settings for ps4.5?

Going to weigh in on this.

I"m pretty sure the 4k gaming part is 100% false.

The hardware requirements for 4k gaming even at 60fps is orders of magnitude higher than what the PS4 currently is capable of. Even 30fps @ 4k you currently need at least a Titan X or GTX 980TI or Fury X. Taking that into account though single card 4K is challenging with each of those cards dipping below 30fps at times. More often then not you need the power of 2 of those cards to get a solid 60fps @ 4k. 2 Titan X = $2000 in hardware alone. 2 gtx 980Ti/Fury X = $1300.

My point is you are GOING to need top end hardware to push 4x the pixel density in video games right now. Period. Top end hardware comes at a premium so unless Nvidia or AMD cut a deal with Sony to sell their top end GPUs at a loss if this rumor turns out to be true a 4K PS4 is going to cost nearly the same as a 4K capable desktop. No less than $1800.

People aren't thinking this through. Another thing is heat and practicality. How many console players game on 4K capable TVs?? Not everyone is going to buy the VR headset so what would be the point in those folks buying an upgraded system?
Not to mention, the sheer HEAT associated with chips that are pumping out 4k/60fps visuals is going to be very high.

On the PC side we are just now on the cusp of performance where single card setups might be able to push 4K max settings @ 60fps. Still even then many people are saying you will need no less than 2 high end GPUs to push that many pixels for gaming.

I seriously doubt that this is true. If it is you are looking at a VERY expensive PS4 that is going to dissuade people from buying it because at that point it really isn't a console and more a 4k capable PC.

Honestly I don't care much about 4K gaming right now, I'd rather have 1080p but better effects and level of detail/draw distances pushed further out. If Sony were to release a new Playstation that was more powerful but still allowed us to play our current PS4 games I'd buy it.

I really don't care for 4k gaming on consoles. They should just concentrate on giving us 1080p/60fps ultrahigh settings for all games as standard.

I think a hardware upgrade is definitely on the cards for both consoles but I agree with Living that 4k is not on the table. It will be 1080/60 with ultra settings and I'm fine with that. It will also allow devs to crank up the visuals for PSVR. This is happening folks although can we stop with the hyperbole of annual updates. It will be at best bi annual but most likely a hardware revision once per gen.

If that turns out to be true then I will be quitting console gaming.

Yep, Might as just well pick out a nice PC that will be infinitely more upgradable and infinitely more backwards compatible than any console. Can't see the release of new .5 edition consoles really being a boom for this generation. It will just split everything and ultimately dilute your audiences.

Ten years was too long for a generation to last, but three years is too short, even given the fact both consoles were woefully underpowered from the start.
