Sony at E3 2017

Sony confirming the PS5 is all the damage they needed to do..... no need for that dev to fall into the console war crap like MS does.

More like damage control, PS5 only exists on paper. No chance of it coming before 2019 earliest. But by then Xbox X next will arrive a year later, no doubt more powerful.

Not really. People thought new gen consoles were pretty much dead that's why Sony confirmed Ps5. But I agree we won't see Ps5 anytime soon. They have a strong line up for 2019 (TLOU and Death Stranding are coming that year.).

Most likely MS will announce there console at the same time as Sony or Sony would have a whole year lead over Xbox. You don't give Sony a whole year lead, it's suicide.

Annoying, just like the commercials.

With the pace that tech advancement has slowed along with costs staying higher longer I wouldn't be surprised if we see another improved PS4 variant before the PS5 comes.

Nah maybe a model with a UHDBR drive though.
I expect a SW BF2 bundle and maybe other game themed bundles.

I don't know, I think adding a better CPU would do more for sales than a UHD player, those can already be found cheaper than an Xbox One S. If they want to extend this generation and keep people from jumping maybe putting out a console with a slightly better GPU than in the One X, match the amount of memory and upgrading the CPU to Ryzen as long as all PS4 games will still run on it would be a better bet. They'd still be able to milk the standard PS4 and also the Pro console sales which make money per box as long as games continue to be made for them and people who want something stronger will have that option as well. We'll see, clearly this is all basically just speculation right now and there are valid reasons to not do it as well.

I'd have to disagree. I'm sure there's a wide swath of the people who'll be buying consoles in the next few years that wouldn't know a Ryzen from a Jaguar or a Jaguar evolved or a Jaromir Jagr, but will hear the "Oh, it won't play 4K bluray?" Especially since CPU doesn't distill down to really braggable numbers of terafloopz [sic] like the GPU e-peen does. I think they'd want to go UHD just because, hopefully, it'll be the standard medium for discs in the next few years, with BluRay being what DVD is now and CD-Rom before that.

I don't know that they'd really see a benefit of coming out with a Pro or standard PS4 that has a UHD player but no other upgrades. The PS4 doesn't have one and it's still outselling the One S on a regular basis. You are right though in a new model it probably would be an extra box to check and something to differentiate it from the other models, if it doesn't raise the price too much it probably would be a good thing to include.

As far as the CPU thing I'm kind of torn, a Ryzen by that time will be available in a console form factor and as long as it doesn't cause issues with playing PS4 games it'd be a nice inclusion but I don't know that devs would really use the extra CPU power much unless they were able to make exclusive games for it. As long as the base consoles are in play there probably isn't much point in blowing the budget on CPU upgrades when GPU and RAM would do more to make the games look better.

hem making a new PS4 without UHDBR would be beyond silly especially after all the heat they got.
Plus making a new improved CPU would be a bad idea with PS5 likely 2-3 years away.

Yeah a new CPU is probably not needed if it can't have games that are able to take advantage of it you guys are right. That being said I still wouldn't mind a new updated console in a year or two, if getting tech that can really give us a true "generational" improvement over what we have now is still quite a ways off I'd love a new console that's say 7-8TF GPU, improvements to the CPU and 16GB of RAM. At that point including a UHD drive probably wouldn't be a problem. Still though the selection of UHD Blu-Ray movies is pretty bad, I've only used my player a couple of times in the 7 months that I've had it.

7-8 TF's won't be enough either.

10-12 TF's
Lesser Ryzen
16gb

Should give true 4K/60 FPS in most games.

I was only saying 7-8TF since it wouldn't be a real generational leap, yeah it'd be a huge leap from standard PS4 but it wouldn't be meant to be new gen either. I'm thinking more of price and timing where tech will be to hopefully release something like that at $399. Honestly from the stuff I've been reading getting a console that'd be native 4K all the time seems like it'll still be more than two or three years away. Yeah you can do it on PC but that stuff is more expensive and would run too hot to be considered console friendly.

Now were at the point consoles are holding back consoles wich I think is stupid. All the money should go into Ps5 not these pointless upgrades. 2 or 3 years from now it will be time for a NEW gen. If they release powerful consoles at launch we wouldn't need refreshes

Personally I'm blow away by what Sony is offering. I'm not in a rush to constantly buy new hardware. I'll upgrade next gen when it counts. Mid gen refreshes are stupid IMO. Console aren't ready for true 4k. The could barely handle 1080p/60. lmao

it's scary to see what Guerrilla and Naughty Dog could do with that kinda power.

I'm not even ready to graduate to 4K yet. Very satisfied with the visuals I'm getting at 1080p. Next gen can wait a while, afaic.

If tech was moving forward as quickly as it used to and prices dropping as quickly as they used to I'd totally agree. Sadly we can no longer expect consoles to have cutting edge hardware at launch, the best GPU's now cost more than the X1X all by themselves and they couldn't fit into a console even if we could afford to pay for them.

I don't agree at all that mid gen refreshes are stupid, they are options for people who want something more and that's a good thing. Last gen went on way too long, I never want to see an 8 year gap between upgraded hardware releases again. While neither the Pro or X1X are even close to next gen they do offer the potential for a substantial graphical improvement over the base consoles. I'm very happy with my Pro and I'm getting an X1X as well but I wouldn't mind getting a PS4 upgrade again when the tech and costs line up right.

I'd rather a true next gen waited until native 4K, 60 fps and Ultra settings are all truly viable at a consumer friendly price point. Until then I'm happy with refreshed versions of consoles every few years that add a bit more bang for the buck.

You're in for a treat, never thought I'd say it, but 1080p looks kinda rough compared to some of the pro games I've played.

Exactly what I wanted to hear.

You're IN skyrim, not just playing it.

One thing I love about consoles is you can see the full power. Mid gen refreshes don't have that luxury. Everything is held back like PC except these are a lot weaker. In no way is that exciting especially when you consider the prices are equal to a next gen console and you'll need a 4k t.v. Also many of these titles don't have true 4k textures or resolution. The 4k push is way too soon It's all marketing hype. Even PC's are strugglin to handle 4k 60 at max settings in every game.

With that being said mid gen refreshes are nearly pointless by the time next gen rolls around the money can go into much better tech without limitations or boundaries . I highly doubt this gen will last 8 years. 6 is more likely.

The problem with that is that PC isn't going to stop, so 4K/60/ultra on console won't generally be available on newly-released games. 4k/60/pretty good is about all we can hope for and I imagine that even then, we'll see targets at 30FPS for quite a few games.

Excellent! He really sounds happy with it. "This is the most emotion Rob has ever shown," lol. (I kept getting distracted by her cleavage). It really sounds great. He sounded really impressed with how the combat felt, including the archery, and how immersive it felt to be in the dungeons. They also confirmed that it's the full game in VR, which to me is pretty amazing.

I was reading a thread at GAF yesterday about a guy who couldn't tell the difference between 1080p and 4K. I don't want to get into all that, but amongst all that discussion, there were a couple of people who said VR was a much bigger game changer at this point than 4K (and considerably cheaper). I don't know that I'm ready to buy into VR quite yet, but it sure got me wondering. As they say, if you love Skyrim and have been on the fence about VR, if this game doesn't sell you... I do love Skyrim, although I've played it twice already, a couple hundred hours each, so I'm not up for another run quite yet.

But playing it in VR sounds like an incredible experience. It's exactly the sort of thing I imagined, when I thought of VR. I probably even said to myself, "How cool would it be to play Skyrim in VR."

Oh no doubt, but it'd be nice to at least have it be within the realm of possibility on a console at some point :) I've been reading some threads on neogaf and they were talking about AMD's roadmap and things coming in the next 2 years that are supposed to be over 20TF, if that's the case I'd rather wait for a true next get to happen until something in that ballpark can be put into a console. I'd be totally fine with at least one new upgraded current gen console between now and then from both Sony and MS.

We'll see, I don't think it hurts to give people options. that whole having to work with the old consoles ends up saving some money though as there is no point in putting in a new gen CPU if you can't really push it.

I don't know about this gen being that short, I think part of the reason they are going to these mid gen refresh consoles is simply because the tech that will truly look next gen vs what we have now isn't even here yet in the PC space and when it does come it's going to be too expensive to put into a console for a while.
