Sony Is Skipping E3 2019

Sony is skipping next year’s E3, ditching its traditional booth and press conference in a move that will have a significant negative impact on the video game industry’s annual trade show.
The Entertainment Software Association, the lobbyist group that runs E3, confirmed the news today, as did Sony.

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” said Sony in a statement. “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
This is yet another blow to the annual Los Angeles trade show, which has seen multiple publishers drop out over the past few years. Electronic Arts now holds its own event in Hollywood in the days leading up to E3, while last year Microsoft rented out a theater at L.A. Live, a few minutes away from the convention center where E3 takes place. Nintendo has spent the past five years eschewing traditional press conferences in favor of pre-recorded videos, and with Sony gone, one of E3's other marquee press conferences will now also not be present in 2019.
Sony also typically occupies a massive chunk of one of the convention center’s two main halls, so the company’s absence will leave a significant hole for the ESA to fill.

The move makes sense for Sony, as the company’s 2019 presser would presumably revolve around three of the four games it showcased last year: Death Stranding, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima, none of which currently have release dates. All three are expected to come out in the latter half of 2019 or later.
Sony also skipped this year’s PlayStation Experience, a conference that it had held every December from 2014 through 2017.
It’s also yet another hint at the timing of Sony’s next PlayStation. Based on conversations with developers across the industry, I expect the PlayStation 5 to be released in 2020, and the publisher skipping E3 2019 certainly points to that.

Is it a squabble over money? Or they just don't think its worth it anymore?

I don't thin its a money issue. Personally, I think its because Sony is gearing up for a PS5 launch in 2020 and may not have enough interesting things to show next year. Logistically though I think its more effective to do a show like Nintendo does with the Directs.

I don't understand that either though unless they are moving Ghosts/TLOU/Death Stranding to PS5. Which is possible.

I get not having a show but they aren't going at all. Nintendo goes.

Yeah, I heard Sony is skipping E3. That's crazy.

They could also be gearing up for a late 2019 launch. That's possible. That's what the leak suggested, anyhow.

I don't like the fact that they're skipping. It's like, make an effort.

But I guess they're saying they don't have enough to warrant a show. Ok, I guess.

Still seems weird to skip E3 all together.

Oh well. I guess MS will have the stage to itself next E3. Except for Nintendo.

I'm guessing it means that they will announce the PS5 and show it off at it's own event where it doesn't have to share any spotlight, probably in September or October and launch it in November.

Was just reading about this. I'm thinking 2019 is pretty much a wrap. Everyone knows what's coming - no need to show the same things again. PS5 might be arriving in 2020 though. By then they'll have plenty on display. Should be a great show!

They'll have a show it just won't be at E3, they aren't going to go an entire year with nothing to show.

I'm kinda disappointed in Sony. Even if they dont have much they could have used the venue to promote some 3rd party and especially smaller games that could use attention.

I'm sure they'll have an event later in the year and that'll feature 1st and some 3rd party games. E3 is the time when 3rd parties already have a ton of access to the media and MS seems to try to put every 3rd party game they can on stage at their show anyway, hell last E3 Sony only showed a couple of third party games at their show as it was. I know it's disappointing when things we are used to change but at the same time if it's not fitting in with their scheduling I can hardly blame them for not wanting to spend the money on another show let alone the stress it puts on developers to get demos ready, especially if there is a chance the new console is coming next year.

I wouldn't mind Sony, Nintendo, and MS all doing separate events during the year, its too much of a hassle for me to try and get caught up on everything at once.

Technically Microsoft weren't at E3 last year as far as I remember - they just did their own thing that week. Sony will probably do something similiar.

This sucks. No E3 floor space size trolling wars :(

If they just do an E3 show from a different venue, like MS did last year, that's fine. I don't think that's what will happen, though. They sound like a no-show.

According to insiders they only have one unnaounced ps4 exclusive which I expect to be japan studio's game and that could be even announced at the TGA's as on linkedin a unnaounced AAA ps4 exclusive is set to release next year. I think they overshot their hand in 2015 and 2016 with so many announcements. We had 2 e3's, 2 psx's, 2 tgs's, and 1 pgw and they continually announced new games. They should have spread some announcements into 2018 and 2017 and people would not be so bored to see TLOU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima again. Still it seems Sony has a plan so let's see what happens.

First time they skipped in 24 years. It's going to be weird, having an E3 without Sony. They usually put on the best show.

Well, it'll be MS's show now.
