This game was promoted throughout development there would be no pay to win paid content, with exception of cosmetic changes. Turns out they added paid airdrops to the game where people willing to pay some cash can get crates with good guns and ammo.

On the plus side, Sony is offering a refund. But you have to contact them by tomorrow. If you don't then you have to keep it.

Sony's 'No Questions Asked' H1Z1 Refunds Don't Go Far Enough
Sony is offering refunds to anyone who recently purchased online zombie game H1Z1.
The refund follows revelations that, contrary to statements from SOE in the days and weeks leading up to the launch of the game on Steam Early Access, microtransactions would be offered for items like guns and ammo.

SOE president John Smedley offered the refund to gamers on the H1Z1 subreddit, writing:


Hi folks,

If you feel like the airdrops are an issue for you, you may immediately request a refund to bwilcox@soe.sony.com – this offer applies till Monday and it applies only to people that have purchased the game as of 10:30am Pacific today 1/16/2015 -

Please note that this is going through us, not Steam. Which means it’s a little more work so please be patient with the actual refund (it may take a day or two).

Gamers can also request a refund through Steam, though the refund will be added to your Steam Wallet.

This is the right move for SOE, though not enough by a long shot. The company has been adamant in its declarations that H1Z1 would not be pay-to-win. The bizarre airdrop microtransations, which Paul Tassi has already discussed in detail, are an interesting twist on pay-to-win, but not necessarily in a good way.

At this point, game developers are running out of excuses when it comes to releasing poorly implemented free-to-play elements in their video games. This is even less excusable with a game that you actually have to purchase in the first place (in Early Access at least.) Enough mistakes have already been made across the industry that these sorts of issues shouldn’t even come up in the first place.

Good on SOE for issuing (limited) refunds, but it doesn’t change the fact that their claims leading up to the game have been tantamount to false advertising. I imagine plenty of other gamers will purchase the game without having read about its revenue model after these refunds are no longer available.

So what should Sony do instead of just offer a refund? Stick with the initial promises made that the game wouldn’t involve this type of microtransaction to begin with. There are other, better and more fair ways to generate revenue.

Good to see the Sony exec offer refunds too, although the offer is half baked. You have to do it by tomorrow and you would only know if you read articles over the weekend or so happen to come across his reddit post which told about the refund offer.
 
What a crock. Hope this game fails now. This industry really pisses me off sometimes.
 
Well it looks like a terrible Infection or Day Z rip-off, so a mixture of both if I had to guess.

That's what I thought. I could see how the pay to be the best could be pretty sh!tty then. Nice how it was sneakily put in too...
 
The devs said this initially:

"We will NOT be selling Guns, Ammo, Food, Water... i.e. That's kind of the whole game and it would suck in our opinion if we did that."

Then they said this:

":cool: We have made the decision to allow paid for airdrops into the game with things like guns and other things being randomly selected as part of the airdrop. We’re making them highly contested and building a whole set of rules around this, but you should be aware that our goal is to make this a way to keep things interesting on the servers but still be contested. If these offend your sensibilities just know that they are going to be there. We have gone out of our way to make sure the airdrops are contested in-game and that you can’t simply expect to easily walk about to the airdrop and grab it. Even if you paid for it. "

Calling an airdrop that anyone can loot is not the same thing as "selling guns and supplies".

Tell us more about your blind cult-like hatred for a corporation and hypocritical worship of another.
 
I've been watching stream of the game and in no way is it pay to win. The loot drops are way too hard to secure. People from all areas can hear the plane. It take the plane up to 2 minutes to fly and drop the crate. Then it takes the crate 3-4 minutes to finally drop. Not only will you have to deal with outsiders, also zombies spawn.

It definitely takes planning to pull it off. It also adds tension and excitement to the game. This is alpha too, so it's an experiment to see how well something like this goes.
