Spider-Man

Could this be the sleeper of the year? Have we had any this year?

I do believe Res Dead will overshadow Spidey but probably not along the lines GTV did to any other game upon its release month. Might easily be forgotten with whatever FPS people fancy afterwords.

I don't think you could call it a sleeper, because that's generally a game that flies below most people's radar and then becomes a hit (e.g., Nier Automata was the last example I can think of). Spider-Man is definitely on people's radar, and I think most people expect it to succeed.

Now if it's as big a hit as the pre-orders and polls suggest, then the level of success will be surprising ... at least to me. I suppose some people have figured Spider-Man would be a huge hit from the start, because of the media tie-ins, the Spider-Man fan base, and so forth.

True.

Do wonder how this will do when compared to the last Spider-Man game, are there any stats on how well the previous ones did? I still see many say Spider-Man 2 was “the best” for its time?

I'm really curious about reply value and mission variety in this one. It looks varied in the gameplay.

I'm getting both Spidey and RDR2. However, I'd pick RDR2 over Spidey IF I had to choose. Luckily, I don't....and there's plenty of time to play one after the other.
Getting both as well. Oddly enough, I saw another poll that had those two games listed (but there were like 3 other games listed, which included FH4 and BFV) and RDR2 beat them all by a landslide including Spiderman. Just depends on the readership.

I read that Marvel gave Insomniac the choice of which superhero they wanted to do a game about, and Insomniac chose Spider-Man. I didn't realize that. I thought Sony and Marvel had decided to make a Spidey game, and they gave the project to Insomniac. Instead, it sounds like Insomniac themselves made the call about which superhero to make the game about. That's cool. It gives me more confidence in the game.

Here's an Insomniac rep talking about it:

"Marvel wanted to work with one of the big studios and specifically mentioned us. Sony said 'Hey are you guys interested in working with Marvel?' and we said 'Of course, but what character do they want us to do?' And they were like, 'Oh no, they want you to pick. You guys can have all the choice of which one you want.' It was like 'Oh wow. So huh, ok, that's an overwhelming decision,'" Stevenson recalls, laughing with the kind of childish glee someone has when they're given the keys to the candy store.

"Spider-Man was the easy choice ("the one that matched up very well with Insomniac and made most sense with the DNA of the games we've made, the types of games we make, the kinds of stories we tell, the character we felt closest to") and work began in earnest, with the teams looking at all manner of games and mechanics past and present as inspiration and to see what worked, and what fell flat."

About the poll results... I'm surprised and honestly a little skeptical. I wonder if maybe GI did a feature on Spider-Man, and then they took a poll of their audience. That might skew things. Another factor is that Spidey is closer, so it's getting a lot of marketing push, whereas Red Dead is simmering on the back burner. I guess I'm just finding it hard to believe that, overall, the average gamer is more excited about Spider-Man than RDR2. But maybe so. I did see another poll with 3000 people, supposedly by a guy who has a predominantly Xbox audience, and Spider-Man still came out ahead of RDR2.

It was just a poll he threw up I believe the day before or that same day, I voted for Spider-Man myself but only by a hair. Spider-Man was way ahead early on and RDR2 ended up picking up enough votes to almost tie it.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that we've seen a lot more of Spider-Man than RDR2 lately.

No idea. I've never played any of the previous Spider-Man games.

I remember playing two, different Spider-Man games, on Dreamcast. Always wanted to play that multiverse one that was released a long time ago, do believe it may have averaged around a seven. Hope this averages at an 8.3 or higher.

Still not available for pre-order on Amazon (unless digital). Hopefully it'll pop up on August 28th, when the new amazon prime policies go into effect.

The review embargo ends on Sept. 4th, three days before the release.

Also, remember that the game went gold a month before release, so it won't be surprising if story spoilers start popping up online, as we get closer.

I looked at pre-ordering on PSN the standard edition, but there really isn't a good incentive. Gonna just buy it the day before so that it is loaded for the day of.

Totally off topic, but you watch BB? You have a thing for Brittany? Never thought I'd bring this up here. :)

I don't know who this chick is, but she is hot. Saw it as a meme in a forum. Now I know Brittany is her first name!

This has been known for a while. All those conspiracy theories about this being created because of the Spidey deal in MCU was nonsense.Marvel wanted a game on the calibre of Sony exclusives and it could have been Iron Man instead of Spidey. As for sleeper lol. This games youtube viewings are off the chart; people are very aware of this game. This will be the game which gets people buying PS4's if they haven't already.

Well if that doesn't tell you how important exclusives are then i don't know what does. Not that Spider-Man is an original property of Sony or anything or it hasn't been done before but that just shows you how hyped people are and how good the game looks. First Spider-Man game done right in a long time.

I have zero doubt that Red Dead 2 is the deeper and probably better game in the end but Sony couldn't have picked a better time to cash in on Spider-Man with Homecoming just coming out last year. I actually watched it again last night, such a good movie.

Yes and no, I kinda feel they played it safe going with Spider-Man and not Sony’s Spider-Man.

The game will definitely get a bigger push once that Spider-Man Into the spider verse is released later this year.

Dude, had Insomniac gone that route with their art direction it would have been epic.

Had no idea they got to choose, that’s crazy. What a tough decision!

Hope to see more big budget Marvel video games. I have been sooooo confused as to why the Marvel and Star Wars licenses have been so underutilized the last 2 generations.

KOTOR, Spiderman 2, and Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction are still the cream of the crop for those licenses and they are all from the Xbox/PS2 era!!

This provides some insights into Spidey's fighting style.

Guess it's no going to be available on Amazon any time soon. It's been out of stock forever.

The new Prime arrangements go into place tomorrow. We'll see if that shifts anything.

remain skeptical

I didn’t get a chance to play it we E3, but I spent about 30 minutes standing behind people playing the demo. And while I love Insomniac, and I’m sure the game will be good, that particular demo decreased my interest. I’ll pick it up on Black Friday if it’s on sale by then.

Have to admit, I'm more interested in continuing with Yakuza Kiwami at this point than in picking up Spider-Man. I'm sure it'll be a good game. I just don't feel in a hurry to play it.
