Spider-Man

I'm not a super hero fan or a super hero video-game fan. But I couldn't help feel my inner child sneak out when they showed the gameplay at E3. It just looks so right.

I think this may be a different game, but there's a free Spiderman VR game out on Steam.

I can only assume it's either on/comming to PS4, since Sony published it.

Looks like we'll be playing as MJ at certain points in the game as well as Peter Parker without the suit. Also we don't have to unlock powers just build them up.

"Yeah!," said Insomniac creative director Bryan Intihar, speaking to IGN. "I can confirm, yes you actually play, at various stages of the game, Mary-Jane."
While he wouldn't be drawn on specifics, Intihar did hint that there would be more to playing Mary-Jane than simply guiding her around story sections:

"It's a very different experience to playing as Spider-Man," he explained, "and it stays true to her character, in terms of her background that she's a reporter for the Daily Bugle. It captures that feeling. Also, the other thing for us is that, even though we are creating a superhero world in the fantasy, we thought it'd be interesting to show what it's like to be a character who doesn't have superpowers, what it's like to be that person in a superhero world, and actually control that character."

Going by her discovery of the Devil's Breath bioweapon in the story trailer, Intihar could be hinting at detective-like play with MJ. He also indicated that MJ herself would be slightly different to her traditional onscreen depictions:

"I really like her role in the game, and to put her in a role that maybe we haven't seen as much. It's less of a damsel in distress, she's much more of a capable contributor, a risk-taker in this game."

If its the same one on PSVR, its totally a gimmick. It feels like one of those first year VR games.

I think it's so great that this isn't linked to any movie, they've got so much freedom to do great things here, I can't wait for this one!

Shinobi hinted that this game may come out before the Fall.

That would be cool, Sony doesn't seem to believe in the old ways of doing things when it comes to releasing your big games during the holidays. It makes more sense to put them out earlier and beat the overly competitive and crowded late fall release window when possible.

Insomniac community manager confirms on resetera what happened:

If you want more about how Spider-Man game came to be, listen to Kotaku podcast of Jason Schrier interviewing Ted.

Long story short: Sony came to us and asked if we wanted to work with Marvel. Sony and Marvel let us decide what character/universe we wanted to make a game based on. We chose Spider-Man.

Yup.

Spider-Man PS4 is Game Informer’s May 2018 cover story, release date announcement coming April 4

If God of War and this game deliver I don't think anything will top PS4 exclusives this year. This has a chance of being a MEGA hit. Sony's money and time combined with Insomniac's talent and Marvel's ambition. Get hyped.

The longer story: Every Spider-Man game before this was multi-platform, even based off of Sony's own movie licence. I'm sure that this was Marvel's request, not Sony's. I'd put money on a Sony/Marvel deal that involved a rights trade for loaning their movie property back to Marvel. Sony gets exclusive game rights as part of the movie "partnership" arrangement. Just a thought. Sony did have Marvel in a corner there. It should have been easy to squeeze a game deal in there.

For movies, the deal definitely involves a timed Marvel Studios live-action exclusivity for Spidey. This is why Sony is skirting Marvel Studios with the Spider-Man-less Venom movie, as well as the upcoming "animated" CGI Spider-Man movie from Lord and Miller... if they aren't fired again.

I'm not sure how it shows through with two totally different games with completely different tones and two different consoles, but the game has quite a bit of the same type of lighting that I really enjoyed from Sunset Overdrive.

LOL no chance.

Why?

Are you saying that Sony announces games several years too soon?

That this game should be released when the next Spider-Man man movie comes out?

Sunset Overdrive was announced 2013 and released October 2014. I would like to see a similar gap here.

Looks outstanding. With Insomniac at the helm you know the gameplay will be great.

Not to be contrarian (who me?), but Insomniac has had some mediocre games recently. In the last 7 years, they have put out a couple of weak Ratchet and Clank sequels, then Fuse, which flopped, then Sunset Overdrive, which struggled, and then Song of the Deep, which got mixed reviews. Their only unqualified success in that period has been the Ratchet and Clank reboot.

I'm not saying Spidey will be a dud. I'm not saying it's unusual that a studio as large as Insomniac produces average games now and then. I'm just saying having Insomniac at the helm isn't a guarantee that it's going to be great.

Sony finally has a holiday game lol
Movie releasing close as well..

Movie looks like ass though.

Which movies are were talking about? Venom? Isn't that movie devoid of Spider-Man completely? I think it's also coming out in September. Yeah, F--- that noise! Will not see!

Marvel Studios/Columbia Spider-Man Homecoming 2 (or whatever the name) shouldn't be out until summer 2019.

Edit: I guess you guys are probably talking about the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, which comes out on December 21st. I didn't realize that it already had a release date.
