STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT: STUNNING ENDOR CONCEPT ART REVEALED - IGN FIRST

EA and DICE have been quiet about Star Wars Battlefront since E3 2014, when we got our first glimpse of the revival in the Frostbite Engine 3 -- and while it’ll be a bit before we finally see the multiplayer shooter in action, IGN is excited to reveal this gorgeous piece of concept art.

Download Star Wars Battlefront's concept art in hi-res here.

The imagery features a pair of Rebels, a woman with a standard blaster, and a man with a scoped rifle, flanking a pair of Stormtroopers – one with his rifle at the ready, the other priming a Thermal Detonator – as the forest moon of Endor burns in the background.

In the distance, behind the Empire’s AT-ST, we get a glimpse of Ewok villages in the trees, hopefully indicating verticality in DICE’s map design. A defeated AT-ST sits smoking in the woods. Perhaps this suggests destroyed vehicles remain on Star Wars Battlefront’s battlefields.

DICE remains close-guarded with gameplay specifics, but speaking with IGN, Star Wars Battlefront Design Director Niklas Fegraeus explained a bit more of what’s to come when the first-person shooter arrives this fall.

We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes.

“The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety” depending on the location, Fegraeus explained. Hoth, where the Rebel Alliance fought off invading AT-ATs in snowy plains, will differ in size than the dense woodland of Endor.

“We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes,” Fegraeus continued, “and what we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”

DICE’s Frostbite Engine brings that to life by way of the studio’s “internally developed photogrammetry systems.” With photogrammetry, developers can use photographed images to achieve an incredible level of detail – we saw this in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which IGN nominated for Best Graphics in the 2014 Best of Technology category.

“Perhaps the hardest part about bringing the franchise back is managing expectations,” said Fegraeus. “Star Wars fans, including ourselves, are incredibly passionate about the universe. Each of us have our own personal favorites. However, with the talent we have here at DICE, the Frostbite technology at our fingertips, and the fantastic working relationship we have with Lucas, I believe we will deliver a Star Wars experience that excites fans around the world and gives them the chance to play out battles in some of the most iconic locales in the series history.”

It won’t be long before we see what he’s talking about – DICE is set to reveal Star Wars Battlefront this spring. “We’ve been showing the game to some close partners and one of the things we hear is that it doesn’t feel like other shooters and that it’s fully born from Star Wars. That really strikes a chord with me and the team as that is exactly the emotion and feeling we are going for and we can’t wait to show the world more this spring.”

f the concept art, I want to see it played!

I hear that. I'm really hoping we'll something significant at or before E3. This has to be a holiday release, right? I'm assuming they'll want it out around the time of the movie...

If this can launch without the usual "Battlefield teething" problems, the game will be awesome. I've been waiting for a new BF forever...

Wonder if this will have playable Main characters like Battlefront 2 including Jedi and Sith.

I loved tearing the s*** out of people with Darth Maul.

When I was bored, I'd set up custom skirmish games with the enemy troop number maxed, get Darth Maul, and just demolish everyone for ridiculous kill numbers.

I am EAGERLY awaiting this game. The video footage I saw earlier was simply mind-blowing. I like their new tech they use with photometry (or something like that). It makes the lighting look very realistic.

im doubting dice will pull this off without a hitch_this one is gonna have some issues no doubt but im just gonna "hope for the best"

I honestly cannot wait for this. For real. Will be getting PC and PS4 ver.

TONS OF STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT RUMORS, HOW IT LINKS TO STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS AND MORE!

Here is a huge Star Wars: Battlefrontlist of rumors I received last week. This contains a lot of information on the game and how it will interface with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, not to mention the game itself:

  • The story of Star Wars: Battlefront’s campaign will span pretty much the entire Star Wars saga.
  • Star Wars Battlefront will feature segments in which you play as both the good guys (Old Republic, Rebellion and Republic) and bad guys (Separatists and the Empire). It was specifically stated that there will be a small portion of prequel trilogy content. You will participate in a couple of battles from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the space battle above Corsucant from the beginning of Revenge of the Sith.
  • The majority of the campaign will take place during the original trilogy era. All of the battles and settings that you would expect to be there will be playable. It was said that the campaign itself is pretty long when compared to other first person shooters.
  • There will be some segments of the campaign which take place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There won’t be a lot because in their words “Lucasfilm has a lot of plans for that era.”
  • The last section of the campaign takes place before and during the opening segments of The Force Awakens. Don’t expect anything too revealing, because the game is expected to ship about a month before the movie releases.
  • For both the Republic (that’s what the good guys are being called in the production here) and Empire sections you will be playing characters that actually appear in The Force Awakens.
  • EA/DICE was allowed into Pinewood Studios for a few days to scan and capture props, sets, etc for recreation in the game.
  • At one point either during either the portion between episodes 6 and 7 or the portion from the beginning of The Force Awakens a character with the last name Tarkin appears.
  • The scale of the multiplayer is going to be absolutely massive with up 64 players participating on each side.
  • Space to land battles are absolutely happening, but will only be available in certain game modes.
  • There will be a “hero” system in place, where as you play you accumulate points that you can eventually cash in to play as a “hero” character. These characters are extremely powerful and have abilities that are not available to the normal characters that you play for most of the matches. The system is constantly in flux, but as it is now, pretty much everyone have a chance to play as a hero at least once per match.
  • The Downloadable Content plan for the game is “extremely aggressive”. Expect up to five DLC packs for the game, with the first coming out before the end of 2015. Each pack will be themed, with the first two or three being exclusively based around content from The Force Awakens.
  • The game will ship with several The Force Awakens characters already, but some won’t be added until DLC. Specifically all of the characters in the trailers will be available at launch, as will new versions of the X-wing an TIE fighter.
  • Tons of new ships and vehicles.
  • The contents of each DLC will contain at least three new maps, new hero characters, and new vehicles/ships.
  • I saw a character model for the new Stormtroopers, the model for the new X-wings, and some random models of guns, grenades, and other things like that. However, the most interesting thing was a picture of a screen from one of the employee databases.
  • It was as a checklist that the department heads can go through to see whats been complete, whats been bug tested, etc. It was basically just a black screen with lines and lines of text posts, with comments and suggestions under each post. What was most interesting about this is what was listed. This particular screen I saw was for a listing of maps for the multiplayer mode. There was a lot of stuff that you’d expect to see in a game like this like:

Hoth: EP5
Endor: EP6
Alderaan
Corscucant
Yavin: EP4

  • Like I said, nothing major. EXCEPT for this listing that I saw
Tatooine: EP1
Tatooine; EP4
Tatooine: EP7

  • Now, I know that’s not concrete evidence that the desert planet from The Force Awakens is Tatooine, but I thought it was interesting because I know there was been some debate about that subject.

That is a lot to take in and if the information is accurate, it sounds like a really great experience for Star Wars fans and the links to the new movie sounds pretty good considering how paltry it could be.

This is the only up and coming competitive shooter that I have any interest in.

I'm probably buying this game regardless. I just need it in my life.

Great as that list seems, I can't bring myself to believe in anything not confirmed by the studio themselves.

It's also hard for me to believe they'd even bother with the old republic era at all. That's too good to be true.

Just to throw out there, it's not 64 players on each side, but 64 players total. It was edited.

This is one of my top, most wanted games. I don't even like Star Wars that much. I just know it's DICE, they've had time to work on it this time, & it's next-gen only, right? The only thing I worry about once again are EA's crap tier servers that they rent out from companies all over the world. This has the potential to be amazing for me though if they use a grown up art style.
