State of Decay 2 dev explains how co-op is going to work

One of the biggest new additions in State of Decay 2 is the ability to play the game in co-op.

This feature was talked about since the sequel was first announced. It supports up to four players, and today, we get to find out a bit more about how it’s going to work.

During the Microsoft gamescom show, Undead Labs’ founder Jeff Strain came on to touch on the game’s unique co-op mechanic. State of Decay 2 supports drop-in drop-out co-op, but every player has to a setting that, when enabled, lets everyone else see they’re willing to help others.

From there, any player can fire a flare indicating they need help. The game will then notify the player with the ‘willing to help’ status and they’re able to join the game of the player in need of help with a button press.

Strain also talked about how having permadeath enhances the experience. According to him, the idea is for each death to teach players something about what they could have done better, rather than frustrate them.

State of Decay 2 is out in spring 2018 on PC, and Xbox One.

I’m going to guess that as a pricing error. Seems a bit off for this game. I could certainly see it being $39.99 though.

sell the game cheap and make more with in-game items?
Sound about right.

But then again the retail price is always a price holder.

Hmmmm that's interesting. I saw a forum post somewhere yesterday that the person claimed to be developer who knows people working on this and said prepare for major disappointment.

We will see but I don’t buy that. The first game was well received and this is a bigger, better, more polished version of that.

$29.99 for the standard edition has been confirmed, along with the release date (May 22nd).

Microsoft has confirmed that State of Decay 2, the zombie-survival RPG from Undead Labs, will release on May 22 for the Xbox One family of consoles as well as Windows PC as a Play Anywhere title. It will also be available that day on Xbox Game Pass. Furthermore, Microsoft also confirmed a price point of $29.99 for the standard edition and $49.99 for the Ultimate Edition.

Nice to finally have a firm release date.

Hopefully we will start to see more footage now.

I guess people forgot the price of Dead island when it came out and it was a hit!

this is a good this for the price.

What version of it is in the game pass? Ultimate or Standard?

The fist game was like £20 too. Add on on the next gdn £5 price hike and it seems normal.

Don't forget tthis is an indie game.

Yeah it's not a real AAA title, the first one was an awesome concept that they just failed to deliver on and that's likely because they didn't have the staff or technical expertise to pull it off. I hope the sequel is clean and not a jank fest like the first one was in many ways when it was released.

They certainly didn’t fail to deliver on the first one.

Hell yeah! Thank you!

Yeah, I don't agree that they failed to deliver the concept either.

The first game simply lacked polish, imo.

I will be getting this through game pass but even the $49.99 price is right with the DLC. I bet this will sell a ton as a result.

To me it just got boring too quickly, not enough variety IMO but that's subjective. The jank and bugs on the other hand were awful and are at least partially responsible for why the game seemed like such a let down to me.

I'm assuming you probably have me on ignore as you never reply but to reiterate, the game did deliver. To say that it didn't is stretching opinion into the realms of trolling. The janky presentation was well know in advance. As was the buggy aspect of some of the gameplay. The fact that people have been looking for a sequel for the last number of years shows you that it delivered.

Does anyone know if DLC stuff is included with Game Pass?
Do I buy DLC separately? Yes. Members can purchase DLC at 10% off the retail price (or the best available discounted price) for Xbox One games while the game is within the Xbox Game Pass catalog. Xbox Game Pass discounts are not combinable with other offers and are not redeemable for cash; discount offers exclude titles within 30 days of launch; discounts based on Microsoft Store price.

Nice, thanks. good to know.

I kind of agree with JinCA as the game didn't appeal to me for the reasons he listed. But I do think it delivered the concept that they intended, and people appreciated its unique take on the genre.
