Official Thread The Last Guardian

Even Sony says it looks like a PS3 game, due to time constraints and vision:

Where are we with development on The Last Guardian? It's been six years and you would expect a release date, but it's still a little vague.

Yeah, so the video we showed [on Monday] is totally playable. It's a small section of a larger level. And we chose to do video because the press conference is really tightly scheduled and because the nature of the game is an adventure game. So the AI involved, the bird, might not do what we want it to do. So in order to make that tight press conference schedule work, we just recorded video. But the game runs like that. Performance-wise it's going very well.

The move from PS3 to PS4 was difficult. Actually, making the game on PS3 was super difficult so basically we gave up. Because it was too slow, the progress. And the team did an amazing job porting the code onto the SPUs. But still the game didn't perform to the required levels and some features are still missing. And the PS4 was approaching and the dev kit became available. So it was obvious for us to move it to the PS4. So the old engineering effort had to go back to the drawing board and be remade for PS4. And that took a long time. But since last year, the development has been going very well. So we have a good amount of confidence in terms of this window for next year.

What about the visual style? Personally, I enjoy it. But there was a lot of reaction on social media where people were saying, when you look at Horizon versus The Last Guardian, it seems very much like a new-gen game versus a PS3-era game. So are the visuals going to get an upgrade?

No, that's the vision for the project. The vision hasn't changed since the PS3 era. It's just that we couldn't achieve that on PS3. [Fumito] Ueda-san doesn't view the need for any changes.

That comment seems more of an artistic reference.

Even Sony says it looks like a PS3 game, due to time constraints and vision:

No, he said they could not achieve the vision on the PS3. He's saying it couldn't work on the PS3. They tried but couldn't get it there -- that's part of the reason for the delay. If it were merely a PS3 game, they could have achieved it on PS3, and he says they couldn't.

Did you see the question, asking about a visual upgrade? They were asking if it was going to get a visual upgrade because the game looks last gen, and Horizon looks next gen. He said no visual upgrade, the vision hasn't changed.

Artistic vision.

Yes, he's saying the artistic vision (their vision of how the game should look) has not changed and will not change. He also said that they could not achieve that vision on the PS3.

You said, "Even Sony said it looks like a PS3 game." I'm saying, no, that's not what he's saying. He's saying that they could not achieve the vision on the PS3 -- more powerful hardware was required. It doesn't "look like a PS3 game," because the game wasn't possible on PS3.

We will have to agree to disagree.

Take off them Xbox headphones, and you'll hear what he's saying more clearly. It's pretty clear, if you actually just listen to what he's saying. "We could not achieve that [the artistic vision] on the PS3." How can it "look like a PS3 game" if they couldn't achieve the look of it on the PS3?

If you take off your Playstation goggles. Read the interview question again. They asked if the game is getting a visual upgrade because a lot of people after the E3 video came out this week said it looked like a PS3 gen game, not a PS4 gen game. He said no visual upgrade and they envisioned the game to look this way, which does look old gen.

BTW I don't do Xbox anything. Not headphones nor goggles. Same for Playstation. In fact I have looking forward to this game big time and can't wait.

Did he say they could achieve it but the performance was awful?

Anyway, I get what KVally is saying. It definitely looks more like a PS3 game than a PS4 game.

With that being said, KVally games on an Xbox.

Ok, Kvally, have it your way. Sony said the Last Guardian looks like a PS3 game.

edit: just saw the Kinda Funny video where Yosh is talking about TLG. He says that they couldn't get the framerate good and other visual features running on PS3. He said they were faced with a choice of either issuing a PS3 version with a "compromised vision" or transferring it to a PS4 project.

I get what he's saying. I just disagree with his interpretation of what Yosh said.

I agree with you that it looks more like a PS3 than PS4 game. In the OP, I said myself that the graphics look PS3-level.

But you agree what the interviewer asked, correct? And what gamers were saying?

Do I agree that gamers on social media (and in forums) have been saying the game looks PS3-era? Sure. I am one of them.

I need to add, though, I like the Ico team's artistic style; I find it very unique, immersive, and evocative. I'm not one of these guys who judges games based on how sharp and detailed the textures are or whether they use some fancy lighting effects. I ain't no graphics whore, and I'll take a good artistic vision over a sharply detailed 1080p boring-ass cookie-cutter game any day.

Did anyone really expect them to start development for this from scratch? That would have been fiscally moronic. I think the game looks great for what it is, a remaster of an unreleased PS3 game.

No but I think people expected them to make it look like a PS4 game.

Take a look at the God of War 3 remaster. That doesn't look like a PS3 game and they didn't build it from the ground up.

Not sure what "look like a PS4 game" means. It looks 1080p, has nice lighting and textures, and fantastic animation. I'm not a GPU-head and can't tell you if there are certain graphical features that are missing or if older techniques are being used, but nothing specific stands out to me as being last gen necessarily. Besides, this game looks like it could have some high level AI going on that could make it a truly awesome experience and very much current gen.

Normally, the most telltale signs are low poly counts on the characters & environment. Asserts are always the hardest to upgrade.

Another fun & interesting looking game being boiled down to nothing but graphics, again.

I know what you are saying, and I agree. Similar to say, No Man's Sky or even Sunset Overdrive. To me, visually they don't look "next gen", but their artistic and visual style are different. Which I enjoy.

here we go again..... lol

Ok, for one, this game is probably about a year or so away. We know its not coming this year, and i don't see it launching side by side with Uncharted neither. So there will be upgrades to it's graphical side, how much is uncertain. However, since it is exclusive to the more demanding, powerful platform, I expect a......first party studio to cater to that advantage. Art style or not, next gen shaders will still apply even to the non elite coders.

Based on the artist direction of this game, photo realism is certainly not something I'd expect of the final version -- especially coming from these guys, but I certainly don't expect the finished product to rival visuals of a comic book neither. These consoles are so pass that phase as far a triple A games go.

I could care less in they downgrade the visuals as long as they release the damn thing and its good.

If it plays anything like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus... I'm in there like swimwear.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has silenced rumours that PS4 system architect and Knack creator Mark Cerny was finishing up development of The Last Guardian.

The rumours surfaced in the run up to E3 earlier this month, before Sony actually re-revealed the game during a jaw-dropping press conference.

But is Cerny involved in development of the long-delayed game? Not on a day-to-day basis, although he’s likely offering advice to any teams that are working on the PS4 system, according to Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida.

“The way the rumour was written is not true. Mark has been helping many of our teams, the same way he’s giving advice to The Last Guardian team, especially on the technical side – he has deep, deep knowledge of the PlayStation 4,” he told GamesIndustry.biz.

“Different teams need different types of help and we have the central tech group as well, these teams have also been helping too. So the rumours had it that Mark Cerny and the Knack team were finishing the game, that’s totally wrong.

“It’s an internal Japan Studios development so when one project finishes like Knack or The Puppeteer, these are done internally, the members move to other projects. In that way they share the resources.”

The Last Guardian is due for release in 2016. Hopefully.
