Official Thread The Last Guardian

It will hopefully come soon to me through Gamefly.
Have patience with Trico. That little f***er doesn't want to listen sometimes. You just gotta keep hammering him until he does what you want.

Ordering him around works best if you direct him to do something once and leave him alone...at least later in the game it does. The camera is still one of the worst in any game I've played, but it moves a bit faster now while trying to adjust it.

Here's a walkthrough and tips on controlling Trico for anyone needing it:

Edit: The descriptions for each section might be spoiler-ish for some people perhaps.

Anyone have any issues with the game reloading after dying?

NVM. I figured it out. L1 & R1.

It's baffling how one part of Studio Japan can make Gravity Rush 2 a massive vertical open world game and have no problems running that but struggled to make TLG.

Where's the struggle? It took 9 years to develop because halfway through the PS3 development cycle the devs realized they couldn't achieve their vision on that hardware. So they started over on PS4. As far as Trico not listening, how do we know that wasn't by design? He's a wild animal. Try teaching a real dog tricks, it takes time.

I thought you could just mash any variety of buttons. It's another design choice that I don't like.

Just finished the game. Easily my contender for GOTY and top 5 game I have ever played. Amazing. I hope this game sold some copies.

Haven't bought it yet but definitely want to play it. Kind of want to play Ico and Shadow as well but not sure its worth it at this point.

Actually remembered I have both of those games from PS+. My first half of the year is stacked but might hook up my PS3 later this summer and finally play those gems.

The ending

110950_o.gif

The game sure can be wonky and with its flaws it could be awful but it was a really amazing experience. Worth the wait.

I still haven't finished the game yet. I'm pretty close, but I get too annoyed with the camera and other issues and turn the game off.

This game is $39.99 now (permanent price drop) for anyone who was waiting to get to cheaper.

While the camera and controls were wonky, they were never bad enough to turn off the game. Though there was one time that I couldn't get the camera to move while I was on Trico's back going through a tunnel and I couldn't turn it, move my character or anything. I went back to my checkpoint to resolve it.

Finally beat this mf'n game after forcing myself to do so. The horrific camera and awful controls completely ruined any fun or enjoyment from the game. I've never been this frustrated with a game in many years. I'll most likely never buy a game made by Japanese developers ever again...that's how annoyed I am. This game can go to hell.

Idk how this game got such high scores overlooking the technical issues it has, but it should be a 6/10 overall.

Played it round a friends and yeah if they sorted out the controls and camera it would have been a masterpiece instead it was just a frustrating mess that felt dated.

People moan at Bethesda getting let off but this is something else :(

Come on. You all act like the controls are as bad as Alone in the Dark or something. Yeah, go play that game then thank your lucky stars.

I've never played it, but isn't that a PS1/DC game?

One of the worst things was crawling all over Trico. It was a complete mess trying to climb or move on the animal without the kid going around in circles, not moving where you wanted, falling off when Trico jumped, not being able to drop off easily when you wanted. It would've been better to hold a button constantly to grip the animal's feathers or something.

I'm almost done with this and I absolutely LOVE this game.

Sure the controls aren't the greatest but there are only a few games this generation that have really absorbed me into their world and made me feel emotion for the characters. Ori, The Witcher 3, and The Last Guardian.

This and Journey are the two best games I have played on PS4.

I'm in the camp that couldn't get past the controls. It made the game too frustrating for me, and I sold it. But I keep hearing great reports from people like Fogle and Kvally (and many more), about what a great game it is. I'll have to give it another try, a couple years from now.

I would almost describe it as a severe dead zone in the analog sticks. It's difficult to control your character with any finesse. But it doesn't ruin the experience for me.

To me, the controls are glitchy. Like trying to maneuver the boy around Trico is a pain in the ass. You can climb up his legs and all around his body, his head, under belly, and sometimes the controls get wonky. One time I was on Trico, went through a door way while I was riding on top of him and I got stuck because it wouldn't let me move the boy properly so I had to dashboard quit the game and then pick back up where my last save point was and then made sure I was under him riding instead on top of him for that door way.

However, that kind of sh*t prolly would. That sounds more like bad collision detection/object clipping, though, unexacerbated by bad controls.

Yes, it is both of what you said. BUT, I still loved it.

It's hard for me to describe, in part because it's been a while since I played it, and also because I didn't play it long before putting it aside. I had some problems with what felt like input lag. I had difficulty climbing Trico. The boy's movements seemed too herky jerky to me. I had problems getting Trico to do what I wanted him to do.

YMMV -- some people say they had no issues with the controls, and others hated them.

I learned that some of what I thought were "control issues" were actually part of the game's design. For example, Trico is not supposed to always do what you want him to do. He's supposed to behave more like a real animal.

Here are some sample complaints from GAF:

"It was literally the most frustrating game I've ever played."

"I have never in my 25 years of being alive ever encountered a game so frustratingly difficult (mechanically) yet oddly satisfying and enjoyable."

"Technically and mechanically, it is incredibly frustrating."

"F*ck the controls of this game in every way. I had to stop playing at the moment to cool off because it was becoming an extreme exercise in frustration dealing with the controls of this game."

"By God, this game is frustrating. The controls and camera are pretty bad, and the bad AI just adds to it. Sometimes I keep giving commands and wait (and hope) that Trico will do what I want it to do. At one time it kept going to the wrong place for almost 10 minutes. I wanted to smash the controller in the wall. Then there is the camera. It in itself is pretty bad, but add the abhorrent frame rate (and I am the kinda guy who rarely feels bad frame rate as long as camera and controls are fine) and weird ass smoothing of camera movement and it's just a clusterf***. Oh and the controls. I just do not feel that the kid is going where I am trying to take it, especially when on Trico. I am trying to take him to Trico's tail, but he will rather enter his ass."

"The very first thing that stood out to me in TLG were the god awful controls. Not a good first impression. The previous games didn't have exemplary controls but TLG goes beyond and into the realm of borderline broken. Horrible acceleration, lag, and terrible contextual detection."

There are also lots of people saying the controls are fine, it wasn't a problem for me, you're exaggerating, you're doing it wrong, etc. So definitely, YMMV.

Like trying to pop a balloon with your dick. Sloppy and frustrating but ultimately fun.

In all seriousness, I need to get this game. Is it $20 yet? I rented it and really liked it. Love the studio in general.
