The Legend of Zelda is one of the longest-running game franchises out there. Until recently, it has been difficult for fans to stitch together the multiple installations of the series, mainly because of the huge time jumps that occur between games (and mostly out of order). I’ll be referencing the Hyrule Historia, Nintendo’s official Zelda Encyclopedia, and trying to present the multiple timelines and events in a way that makes sense. To start, I’ll be covering the creation myth and the general happenings of Skyward Sword (most recent installation, but the first to happen in the timeline). It’s a lot of information, but it will lay the foundation for a lot of what will follow.
The Creation of the World

Hyrule was formed many ages ago through the works of the three Golden Goddesses: Din the Goddess of Power, Nayru the Goddess of Wisdom, and Farore the Goddess of Courage. Before spirits and life existed, these three goddesses descended upon the chaos that was Hyrule. Din, with her strong flaming arms, cultivated the land, created the red earth, and was thus responsible for the creation of the geography of Hyrule. Nayru poured her wisdom onto the earth and gave the spirit of law to the world, bringing order to a formerly chaotic realm. Farore, with her rich soul, created all life forms that would uphold the law established by Nayru.
The Goddess Hylia

When the labors of the three great goddesses were completed, they departed the world for the heavens. The three goddesses left behind a symbol of their power, the all-powerful relic known as the Triforce, which when mastered in its entirety would grant the heart's desire of its holder. trusted the ultimate power in the hands of Her Grace, the Goddess Hylia, to protect it. The Demon King Demise, wanting to make the world his own, gathered an army of monsters and together launched an attack against the people of the surface, murdering them and causing misfortunes in an attempt to get their hands on the power guarded by Hylia. Hylia gathered the surviving humans on a piece of land and sent it to the heavens, beyond the clouds and out of reach from the evil plaguing the land. In order to keep it from falling into the hands of Demise, Hylia also sent the Triforce to The Sky and hid the portals to three pieces of the Triforce within Sky Keep, and enshrined the Goddess Sword inside the Statue of the Goddess, to be found by a chosen hero when the time was right.
The Triforce

The most sacred relic in the LoZ universe, as it can fulfill the wish of anyone who possesses it. However, it does not distinguish between good or evil, and allows both good and bad wishes. A strong heart, innate ability, and balance of the three virtues (power, wisdom, and courage) are required to be granted a wish. If one who does not possess these requirements touches the relic, it splits into three pieces. The finder is left with the piece most signifying their strongest quality, and the other two are placed in the hands of two individuals chosen by the goddesses. All three pieces must be reunited in order to achieve true power.
Skyloft

As mentioned before, the goddess Hylia had sent the supposed last remnants of humanity into The Sky in order to keep them safe from Demise. The plot of land that they were sent up on became known as the Isle of the Goddess. The islands that the surviving humans inhabited were known as Skyloft. It is here that the stage for first struggle of between the Hero of Time and Demise would be set. It is unknown were the humans on the Surface originated from, but it’s likely that they descended from above the clouds and never found a way to return. As such, very few individuals on the Surface knew of Skyloft, and vice-versa. After thousands of years, both civilizations became completely unaware of one another. Over time, as the seal that contained Demise began to weaken, a human girl was born. She was given the name Zelda, and she was the goddess Hylia reincarnated. She grew up alongside a young boy named Link, a Knight in training.
The Demon Lord and The Goddess Sword

Around the same time, Demise sent his follower Ghirahim to the Surface, where Ghirahim gave himself the title of lord. Through secret plotting and scheming, he unleashed demon hordes on the land in an attempt to find the goddess and resurrect the Demon King Demise. He eventually found Zelda in the sky, and produced a tornado that broke through the clouds and caused her to fall to the Surface. Following the path of his destiny, Link was guided to the Goddess Sword enshrined in the Statue of the Goddess. He was escorted by Fi, the spirit of the sword, down to the Surface. Meanwhile, Zelda is captured by Ghirahim’s henchmen, but is saved by Impa, of the Shiekah tribe.
The Gate of Time

Following her rescue, Zelda regains her memories as the goddess Hylia. In order to strengthen the seal of Demise, Impa and Zelda attempt to return to the past, using the Temple of Time in the desert. However, Ghirahim catches up to them and interferes. Luckily, Link shows up just in time to cover Impa and Zelda’s entry in the Gate of Time. Upon entering, Impa destroyed the gate, as to keep Ghirahim from following them into the past.
Zelda's Slumber

After passing through the Gate of Time, Link finally met up with Zelda and Impa. Unfortunately, Zelda had come to the realization that, in order to strengthen the seal of Demise, she must slumber in the Sealed Temple. Zelda then encased herself in a magic crystal and fell into a deep sleep. The Surface became stable once again, and Skyloft flourished. Link returned to his own era, and became worthy of the omnipotent Triforce. He was granted his wish: The Statue of the Goddess returned to the Sealed Grounds, where it destroyed the Demon King. After thousands of years of sleep, Zelda finally awoke.
Tempering of the Sword

In order to reactivate the other Gate of Time in the Sealed Temple, Link traveled across the land to find the Sacred Flames. Using these essences of the Golden Godesses, he forged the Goddess Sword into the Master Sword. This blade was imbued with the power of the Force and was able to reactivate the broken Gate of Time.
Resurrection of Demise

The enraged Ghirahim kidnapped Zelda, and took her through the Gate of Time. After arriving in the past, he performed the ritual to resurrect Demise. Link followed Ghirahim through the Gate into the past. There, Ghirahim revealed himself to be the spirit of Demise’s Sword. Link defeats Ghirahim, but he was too late, as Demise had already awakened. After an intense battle with the demon, Link proved victorious. Upon his termination, the Demon King’s hatred was absorbed into the Master Sword, where it was sealed away. The demons on the Surface no longer terrorized its inhabitants.
The Beginning of the Cycle

Link and the others returned to the present time. Everything was peaceful, and Zelda resolved to live on the surface in order to protect the Triforce. The Master Sword and its spirit Fi are returned to their resting place inside the Statue of the Goddess. However, the destruction of Demise was not the end. It was the beginning of an eternal curse: a never-ending cycle of the reincarnation of the Demon King, whose hatred for all those with the blood of the Goddess Hylia and the spirit of the Hero everlasting.

I love love love Zelda.

That being said the whole timeline gets pretty wonky and its almost like every few games they have rebooted the whole thing.

Like NES Zelda 1-2,SNES Zelda 3 and the GB games all work well togther. You can even shoehorn in Ocorina in that timeline but after that it starts to fall apart. Windwaker and Twilight and Skyward are all almost their own remakes/universes of Zelda.

Still awesome though.

Legend of Zelda - Lore and Timeline: Part 2

Part 1: http://imgur.com/gallery/2WaEj QUICK NOTE: I'm not expecting these timeline connections to make 100% sense. Although I am trying to remain faithful to the meta-canon timeline that Nintendo put out there. The main purpose of this is to try and connect the concepts and themes of the series into a continuum, not so much the actual events. Is it necessary? Maybe not. But I enjoy doing the research, so I'm gonna keep doing it anyway. CORRECTIONS: A person would not necessarily need to have a balance of all three virtues to use the Triforce. This rule seems to vary from game-to-game (like many aspects of the series). RECAP: When we left off last time, the Demon King Demise had been vanquished by the (first) Hero of Time. Peace had been restored to the Sky and the Surface. This was only the beginning.
The Realm of Hyrule (brief lapse into Ocarina of Time)

Created by the Golden Goddesses and protected by the goddess Hylia, the world originally known as the Surface eventually became known as Hyrule. The Hylians, descendants of Hylia, lived in Hyrule and possessd magical abilities. After years of peace, a wave of chaos once again swept across the land.
Battle for the Sacred Realm
1bwBv4f.png

The legend of a supreme power spread throughout the land, inciting vicious battles among those who sought to posses the omnipotent Triforce. Rauru, the Sage of Light, constructed the Temple of Time in order to disguise and contain the only existing entrance to the sacred realm, where the Triforce resided. With power stronger than both time and the Master Sword, Rauru sealed the Sacred Realm (because Rauru is a badass).

The pedestal holding the Master Sword was closed behind the Door of Time and the keys to the Door (Spiritual Stones of fire, forest, and water) were protected by their respective people.

The Triforce was placed in the Temple of Light, located in the Sacred Realm, which was now completely isolated from the realm of Hyrule. Protecting the Triforce in the Temple of Light, Rauru became the guardian of the power of the gods.
Establishment of Hyrule Kingdom

uRW68GB.png

The descendants of Hylia, reincarnated as Princess Zelda, established the Kingdom of Hyrule and became Hyrule’s royal family. Hyrule castle was built in the center of Hyrule in order to protect the Triforce, since that was where the Temple of Time was located. They watched over the Triforce, keeping its existence unknown to the inhabitants of the land. Many members of the royal family were born with special powers that connected them to the goddesses (due to their direct lineage from Zelda). Princesses were repeatedly given the name Zelda, keeping with the name from the historical legends.
The Hero of Men (plot of Minish Cap begins here)
JqIT5Rd.png

[I’m going to try to condense the plot summary as much as possible] In the first major event to happen since the kingdom of Hyrule was established, the world was engulfed by evil beings and shrouded in darkness. It was then that the tiny Picori descended from the Sky bringing a golden light and a sword [it is unknown if the Picori are directly descended from the inhabitants of Skyloft]. Using the sword, the Hero of men sealed the evil beings away in the Bound Chest and brought peace the world once again. The Golden Light was the Light Force. The Royal Family became the careful overseers of the Picori Blade, and kept the existence of the land of the Picori, the Minish Realm, hidden. In gratitude to the Picori, the people held a Picori Festival once a year. These festivals would usually involve a sword-fighting tournament, with an awards ceremony held in front of the Picori Blade.
Vaati's Plot
Tgib4X4.png

On the hundredth year of the Picori Festival, there was an unusually grand celebration. An unknown man named Vaati was the victor of the sword-fighting tournament. Vaati believed the Light Force was in the Bound Chest, and broke the Picori Blade to unseal the chest, which was revealed to not contain the Light Force after all. Instead, the evil that had long been sealed away in the chest poured out. Vaati turned Princess Zelda to stone and headed off in search of the Light Force.
The young boy Link and the talking cap Ezlo

The curse placed on Princess Zelda could only be broken with the Picori Blade. The Picori, or “Minish” as they were often referred to, were the only ones able to fix the broken blade. But the Picori could only be seen by children. As such, young Link was enlisted to bring the broken Picori Blade to the Smith of the Picori tribe.
The Four Elements
C3FdB8U.jpg

Feeling responsible for Vaati’s actions, Ezlo teamed up with Link to find the Minish Village. The Minish were so tiny they could fit into the palm of a human’s hand. Link entered the portal to the Minish Woods and shrank down to the size of the Picori people. Link needed to obtain the four elements hidden around the world to mend the Picori Blade. Meanwhile, Vaati continued his quest for the Light Force. He took control of the King of Hyrule and had him order his soldiers to search for the Light Force. Having learned, of the four elements’ connection to the blade, Vaati waited fro Link to collect the four elements so he could take them for himself (a lazy but effective dick move). After collecting all four elements, Link used them to mend the Picori Blade, which became infused with the elements’ power and transformed into the Four Sword. The Four Sword allowed the wielder to split himself into four identical copies of him/herself. This event also revealed that the Light Force dwelled within the Princess Zelda, generation after generation.
Vaati's Wrath and The Mage's Cap
GXHwzZI.jpg

After following Link and learning of the Light Force’s location, Vaati took Princess Zelda and extracted what he could of Light Force from her. He used the power of the Light Force to transform himself into Vaati’s Wrath. Using the power of the Four Sword, Link destroyed the Wrath and broke the curses on Princess Zelda and Ezlo. The battle between Link and Vaati’s Wrath destroyed Hyrule Castle. Ezlo gave Zelda the Mage’s Cap. Zelda used the remaining Light Force within herself to restore Hyrule to its original condition. Following this, the door to the Minish Village began to close. Before he left, Link was given the green cap by Ezlo. who returned to the Minish Village as Link returned to normal size.
The Seal is Broken (brief lapse intp Four Swords Adventures)

Peace was fleeting in Hyrule. Vaati, presumed dead, suddently reappeared, and terror returned to the land. Vaati occupied the Palace of Winds and kidnapped every beautiful woman in Hyrule, one by one. It was then that the Hero, carrying the legendary Four Sword, appeared. Yapping into the sword’s power, the Hero’s body split into four, and the combined power of the Heroes was enough to defeat Vaati, who was sealed in the Four Sword and enshrined in the Elemental Sanctuary.
Resurrection of the Wind Mage/Vaati (plot of Four Swords begins here)

For generations, Princess Zelda and her descendants looked after the Four Sword, but a day came when the seal began to weaken. When Princess Zelda went to check on the seal, it broke. Vaati escaped and took the Princess to the Palace of Winds.
The Power of the Four Sword

Link witnessed this resurrection and, shortly after, a fairy appeared and instructed him to draw the Four Sword once again. As he did so, he split into four.

The Great Fairies said that they could help Link get to the Palace of Winds, but he would first have to prove himself to them by defeating dangerous foes and collecting rupees (because Great Fairies are a******s).

After much unnecessary errand running, Link was given the keys to the Palace of Winds, now known as Vaati’s palace.
The Final Confrontation With Vaati

yljIn2l.png

The four Links confronted Vaati in the depths of his palace. Using their combined power, they defeated him, and rescued Princess Zelda. Vaati was once again sealed into the Four Sword, and the sword was returned to its pedestal. Link merged back into a single form. Princess Zelda and the people of Hyrule once again kept strict watch over the seal.

Yeah, Zelda is kind of like Final Fantasy to me. Random as all hell but every game is amazing in its own way.

I actually have the Hyrule Historia book. Recommend it to any Zelda fans. It's good.
