I have enjoyed all of the movies he has directed (have not seen Hacksaw Ridge yet), I just do not think he is the right fit for this. It could be interesting if he is given full control over it. We all know the studio will step in at some point though.

The thing is it wasn't long ago he was saying how much he hated comic book movies

I just don't think Gibson is a good fit for something like Suicide Squad. As far as I know, he doesn't seem very experienced in that form of fantasy storytelling, in addition to him not being a fan of the genre it seems. Not saying he can't do a comic book movie, but I'd much rather see him direct something like the Punisher or Kick-Ass.

Maybe they thought Gibson fits the Suicide Concept, since it's about talented villains doing dirty jobs that no one else wants, but need to be done.

Let's have some fun with that title
To be fair, there was one reason, and one reason only why they won that Oscar.

It wasn't for the Witch, or the crodile thing, or any of the monsters...

It was simply because the makeup team managed to make Viola Davis's eye socket depths seem less cavernous than your average spelunking adventure.

She's and amazing actor, but anyone that has seen her without makeup, knows that she resembles an angler fish. Oprah's make up team had the same issue, but once she found people that could light her and beat her mug, she chained them to her dais. Just like Jubba.

SUICIDE SQUAD Is Now Ahead of BATMAN V SUPERMAN And CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR In Home Media Sales

Suicide Squad went on sale on home entertainment last December, and now it is outselling all other comic book movies from last year, including BVS and Captain America: Civil War.

According to reports, Suicide Squad has now surpassed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War and Deadpool in terms of both Blu-Ray and DVD sales. The movie has now already sold 1.6 million Blu-Ray copies and 971,026 DVD copies, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has sold 1.5 million Blu-Ray copies and 619,096 DVD copies, and that has been out on home entertainment since last July.

In terms of earnings, Suicide Squad has already made a whopping $49.6 million in Blu-Ray sales pulling in ahead of the $39.1 million made from Batman v Superman within the same timespan.

Meanwhile, Suicide Squad is also ahead of fellow comic book movies Captain America: Civil War and Deadpool in home media sales. In comparison, Captain America: Civil War made $46.4 million in Blu-Ray sales within the same time period and Deadpool made $46.8 million. Do keep in mind that all of these comparisons are only taking into account the first four weeks of home entertainment sales, so it looks like Suicide Squad will finish ahead of all of these comic book movies.

Here is a ranking of the total domestic video sales:

Deadpool - $90.6 million
Captain America: Civil War - $73.1 million
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - $72.7 million
Suicide Squad - $71.0 million
X-Men: Apocalyse - $29.1 million

Younger kids fell in love with the movie. My niece has become a huge Harley Quinn fan and has a HQ hat/jacket she loves to wear. The movie struck the right nerve with the younger crowd it seems. Also, I still need to see Civil War and Apocalypse.

Maybe it was the simple plot and the characters that weren't all too deep. Or maybe it was the songs. That type of music draws in the young crowd. Civil War is currently on Netflix, by the way.

I think many underestimated how many people like how the characters look/act in the film. Joker and Harley being a good example. Plus, the movie was a CGI fest starring Will Smith. He's still a solid draw if it's these action blockbuster type of flicks. Even that After Earth movie ended up being $240+ million worldwide.
