The UnionVGF Weightlifting/Workout Thread

This is what I plan to do this year, start taking Tae Kwon Do. Another thing, I started this morning (after about 4 months of nearly no exercise) was follow some 20 min yoga videos. I read somewhere recently that yoga canbe every bit as good for your cardio as aerobic exercise, so I figure I'll give it a shot.

Sick to death (almost literally) of being overweight and lethargic, time to work that out, so to speak.



That's my one last truly bad habit, I can't seem to kick that morning 20oz of vanilla coke. I don't drink coffee so coke is how I wake up in the morning.

You should do some Brazilian Jujitsu and Judo. Not only is it some of the best work-outs (just try rollin' for 2 minutes straight) but it has more practical application. It doesn't have as much of the disciplined martial -art lifestyle ideology if that's what you want, but it all depends on the instructor.

I also hear a lot of positives about yoga for the less violent.

This alone screams volumes about what you can do with YOGA if you put your MIND into it.


 
I'm interested in Boxing for fitness. Just hitting the punching bag in the gym, not for any kind of competition. I find it less boring than just doing weight lifting.

The gym has some free gloves but I've been reading that people should use hand wraps to. I'm not sure I need this as a noob, but I'd like to avoid injury. Especially if I plan to go into computer programming and will have to type a lot. I don't want to do something that contributes to carpal tunnel or arthritis.

Maybe I could just wear wrap/gloves?

I have some wraps that I wear just like that when I go crazy on the bag at home. Most of the time though I can go bare knuckle but I have been doing Bareknuckle Karate for 8+ years so I don't recommend it to a beginner.

Did my first L-Sit Pull ups and I am 2" away from full One arm push ups. :D
 
I never get time to workout. I might just go on the air sandwich diet for a while just to lose a few pounds.
 
Working out has been more of a chore than ever for me lately. The only real reason is since I just moved to NYC, the gyms here are so ridiculously packed that it's hard to do everything I want at the gym and it gets tiring waiting for the squat racks to open up.
 
I agree with taking some form of martial arts. I highly recommend muay thai, not the mma diluted version but the authentic stuff. If you know what I mean by saying that kudos to you.
 
Started running/cycling again and will so get back to weights but I find them dull.

Might have to start hitting a punch bag.

I fully recommend using hand wraps and learning to correctly put them on, I did boxing pretty hard out for a couple years and they saved my wrists from injury when others around me were complaining of sore wrists and elbows. Actually I didn't use them a couple times and hit the bag on the wrong angle and had wrist problems for months.

But just depends on how hard you go, If its a softer bag i'm pretty sure you can get some slip on wraps which take a lot less time.
 
On week 2 of my P90X3 and already feel a difference.

Been thinking about this some more and might get the simple Gel Wrap or something. This gym just has a punching post thing, not a true Heavy Bag anyway.

Also, I'm interested in it just as a full body activity, I don't care about hitting the bag full force or training to be a real boxer lol. It seems like an alternative to the weights which seem BORING and also I don't think I have the time or consistency in my schedule for serious weight training. I think for me, it would mostly be about getting away from the computer after college Software Programming classes just to move around and be sure to do the body motions behind the punches.

Got some gel wraps and wearing them under the gloves available at the gym for free. I like it so far. I'm glad I looked to this a little bit to help avoid noobie injuries.

Again, this makes me feel more involved in the exercise as opposed to any of the machines that are so boring. :txbsmile:
 
Started doing T25 about 5 weeks ago. Just finished the Alpha stage. Supposed to work out 5xs a week. I skipped out on a few workouts here and there and did my own cardio (running) instead of some of the cardio workouts they had. In addition I started watching what I ate (and drank) during the week and I've dropped 10 lbs since starting. Beta stage begins tonight.
 
Started going to a new gym closer to my work than my apartment. Seems much better crowd wise.

You know how they always say " eat 1-2 grams of protein per pound of body weight" for gaining mass. I am curious, does that mean 1gram per pound of lean body mass, or 1 gram per pound of overall weight.
 
I've recently been doing Brazilian Jujitsu 6 times a week (In advanced stage) and goddamn this sh!t literally destroys fat and it's amazing for building a good physique. I highly recommend it for everybody! It may "look" boring when you're spectating but sh1t's exciting as hell when you're actually rolling. For me it seems like a much simpler way to get to where you want than strictly going to the Gym all the time.

I'm currently at 82/83 KG. Been trying to gain weight (Muscle). I was around 110KG (Maybe 115) and brought my weight down to 79KG but I think That was pretty much the plateau. For somebody who was fat for almost all of his life, this sh!t was easy. Now it's the real hard part which is gaining muscle!

I haven't been counting my cals since I made the switch. I just try and eat as much protein heavy foods as I can. Generally been trying to eat clear and I think I'm doing OK. But damn is it hard to get the amount of protein you really need.

Depends on the training experience of the lifter.

I agree with PV, but I can tell you that unless you are taking massive doses of anabolic steroids, you will never need to eat 2 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight.

Honestly, even if you are looking to gain mass, you probably don't need much more protein than you are already getting (provide your diet doesn't suck in its current form). Even at a gram per lb of lean mass (which is still a lot.....US RDA's are currently ~0.7 per KG of bodyweight to maintain health), you don't need much. Using that example, if you wanted to gain 20 lbs of muscle, which is a ton if you're natural, you'd only have to increase your protein by 20 grams a day, which isn't much at all.
 
I've just started going to a TRX/Strap class since my knee got hurt. That is my strength training and I'll be doing workouts on my Precor Elliptical trainer at home for my cardio. I went to the doc and he said no more running on long distances for right now. I ran two half-marathons before I got hurt.

The TRX class has been great for my knees and joints. Highly recommended.
 
ran a 10 k at a 7:30 min mile pace. probably could have shaved about a half minute if I wasn't clenching my buttcheeks together trying to hold in last nights meal.
 
Strict one arm Military Pressed my 32kg(70 lbs) kettlebell x1 each arm. Been working on that for a few months. :D

Kettlebells are hard to press. The best I ever did was an 80lb kettlebell strict press. I don't do that anymore though. My elbows bother me too much. I just do dumbbell presses with lighter weight and higher reps for overhead work now. Getting older sucks.
