The Wrestling Topic

It's strange, this game says it's unlocking 1 day and 17 hours from now while Yakuza Kiwami 2 is unlocking 1 day and 8 hours from now which is 9:00 pm Pacific tomorrow night. I don't know why Fire Pro has an unusual unlock time, hopefully it's just an error.

Not loving it so far but I see the potential for fun, just not liking that the striking misses so much and that whenever I push the run button he takes off in a different direction than I'm facing.

Spent more time with it, I see the appeal as far as the grappling game goes since it has sort of an old school arcade style but the striking and running parts of the game are AWFUL! They never run in the proper direction and if they do hit detection is so picky that 90% of the running moves miss. I realize strikes have to be performed at the proper distance but they are mostly useless and trying to do anything off of the top rope is a waste of time. I don't get how when I'm knocked down the computer has time to go up top and jump off on me after only doing like 3 moves to me ahead of time yet when I beat the hell out of the opponent for 10 minutes they never stay down long enough for me to even make it to the top rope let alone jump off and hit them. If you could at least lock onto the opponent that would make the gameplay a lot more fun but it seems like a broken game to me, I know the die hard fans talk about it like it's perfection but I find the WWE games more competently made even with all of their flaws. Maybe I'll find out I've been doing something wrong but so far I haven't found anything in the game that actually explains how to play it any other way than I already am.

You have to hit the direction you want to run/strike plus the button.

I suggest watching the tutorials.

I do hit the direction I want to run and still they seem to go the wrong way and the strike buttons have to be pushed early so they have time to actually execute the animation otherwise they just run into each other. Try using a superman punch and see how often it actually connects, I've hit it once out of about 100 attempts lol.

You have to aim diagonal some times.
With practice you will get it.

I have been lol it's just really frustrating because running in a particular direction should be pretty damned easy but it's not for some reason with this game. The game has personality so I see the appeal to those who love it but so far I'm finding the actual gameplay and lack of intuitive controls to be far more frustrating than the WWE games.. The grapple game isn't all that hard to pick up although I still think they should allow more direct control of things as it seems grapples are solely based on when the computer is ready for it vs when you want to do it. They really should have a tutorial mode.

Its different but far better than the wwe games controls which i loathe.
Those games get no respect from wrestling fans for a reason.

Fire Pro has the 2nd best controls behind wwf no mercy imo.

I'm enjoying it more now that I've accepted that you can't do running strikes/grapples when moving diagonally but I have to say it's a far more limited experience than the WWE games. The WWE games are annualized and the improvements between one year to the next are rarely significant but, a lot of people I know that complain about them haven't played one in years. That being said the gameplay is far deeper in the WWE games, you have far more moves you can use and you they aren't limited by what direction you are moving in. The hit boxes in FPWW are also very unforgiving, it is fun though and I'm glad I bought it but I would never consider this a replacement for a WWE game just a nice secondary wrestling experience. It reminds me of the old school arcade wrestling games.

Far Deeper?
heccccckkkk nooooo

More moves?
nope

I do diagonal running attacks all the time hence me telling you earlier.

Hit boxes are as good as it gets for this type of 2.5 D wrestling.

The above things are so far off that you are saying that it tells me you don't understand how to do everything to see what it offers.

When i was new to Fire Pro 6 man scramble on the Sega Saturn i felt the same way.

I have played the 2K trash as i buy em for my son every other year.

To do something as simple(should be) as climbing out of the cage or grabbing the belt in a ladder match in terrible like a damn mini game don't make me bring up the terrible kicking out of pins mechanism.

The collision is easier in the 2k games but is goofy at times.

You spent money learn the game and you won't regret it.

WWE games give you a 8 moves per button from the front and 8 moves per button from the back, 2 signature and two finishing moves plus the rebound moves off of the ropes for some characters etc, that's far more moves than you have available to you when playing a game of Fire Pro. Also a lot of the moves you unlock in FP have different names but are the same move with no noticeable variation to the animation. This game also has AWFUL instructions, it doesn't tell you how to tag in tag matches or how to climb the cage in cage matches etc. Don't get me wrong I like it but so far the controls seem a bit wonky, running and trying to do any kind of strike diagonally doesn't work at all for me, they don't even attempt to do a move.

I agree the WWE games have plenty of flaws but they offer so much more overall than this game does of course they are fully 3D vs this being a 2.5D game so a straight up comparison isn't really fair.

"In an era when so many other wrestling games continue to focus on style over substance, a legendary Japanese franchise returns to remind its rivals of how things should be done. While Fire Pro Wrestling World isn’t without room for fixes or improvements, it’s still by far the best video game wrestling experience to arrive in recent memory. It’s been 12 years since the last proper Fire Pro game, but it was absolutely worth the wait."

Always loved Hakushi (Jinsei Shinzaki) that move at the :52 second mark is so much better than the crap suicide dives that Rollins and Ambrose do today.

The cruiserweights will continue to be wasted sadly until HHH takes over.... which is actually weird saying that.

Same will all the guys who have come from nxt sadly.

Was thinking about going to a New Japan event on September 30th that's only about 15-20 minutes from me but the cheapest tickets are $50 and they go up to $300, I'll stick with watching it on TV lol.

I've only been to a WWF event 1 time when I was a puppy back in 87 or 88 and it was like $6 per person. All I can remember was there being an IC match between Steamboat and Savage in a cage.

My first WWF event was way back in the mid 80's when Hogan was champion and he faced Terry Funk, also saw Steamboat vs Magnificent Muraco, Roddy Piper vs JYD, Adrian Adonis was there and got a coke thrown in his face so security made an entire aisle of people leave lol.

I remember another time going to the Anaheim convention center and seeing Hogan vs Bossman in a cage, a few of us went up to the guard rail after the show and Slick who was Bossman's manager at the time said "get those white boy MF'ers back" lol. Those events were when I was in middle school and high school.

I used to go to WWE events quite often, saw matches like Undertaker vs Yokozuna in a casket match, which was cool because that was the first live event I had been to where they actually upped the production values and had the lighting rig over the ring making it look like lightning flashing when taker was coming out. One thing that was really sad about that night is they had a Paul Bearer "look-alike" contest and this little kid who had to be under 10 came to the ring in the black suit and carrying an urn and once he started trying to talk like Paul everyone booed the s*** out of him, I'm sure the kid cried because he had a full arena basically telling him he sucked lol.

Later in my 20's I had a friend who worked at Jakks Pacific who made WWE action figures at the time and he got me comp tickets to the Pond in Anaheim every time WWE was there. One of those events was a RAW taping which was pretty cool, they were pretty bad seats that night and we were up in the top level, you could still feel the heat from Kane's pyro all the way up at the top of the arena.

I also went to a live WCW event at the LA forum, it was a "non televised Nitro" event so they brought the Monday Nitro stage and everything but the show wasn't televised.

I've been watching New Japan lately and I'm enjoying it, I like how the crowds don't try to hijack the show the way American crowds do these days and the performers really seem to go all in.

I don't even remember the faces to most of those people unless they were in the WWF where you're constantly reminded of them throughout the years. I can hear it in my head where that Slick guy would be saying that racist stuff...

I wish I could've gone to more shows, but it's an 80 mile round trip to see anything. I could go now of course, but I don't like humans anymore. I only watched NJPW when AJ was on there, so idk much about that anymore.

Is this game similar to Pro Wrestling on the NES? That was the last game that looked like this that I played. I absolutely loved that game back in the day.

What the season mode look like?

Anyone who likes wrestling games should pick this up, I think it's a bit over hyped by some but it is a lot of fun and I'm glad I have it. It's got a lot of personality and if you start watching new japan you'll know who the characters are more.

On another note I also picked up WWE 2k19 on One X and while the graphics are nice and the game plays faster than before damn I regret buying it on the One X, that controller sucks for WWE games. The triggers just don't feel right for that type of game compared to the wider triggers on the DS4.

They really need to change their gameplay engine on the WWE games, they need to let you get up on your own instead of waiting for the opponent to come do a move to you and hope you can reverse it. They take too much control away from you when you aren't on offense and that's not fun, what makes it worse is there is a bug in the game right now where even if you turn the reversal sliders to 0 the AI still reverses every 3rd move. It's a great looking wrestling game and they've made some improvements but they need to clean up some of the fundamental issues if they want that series to move forward.

I don't think it's really fair when people compare FPW to WWE, they are totally different games in many ways, yes they are both wrestling games with a ton of customization options but that's where the similarities end.

Edit: I hated playing 2K19 so much on the One X that I ended up getting it for the PS4 Pro as well, I spend too much money on games lol.
