Thinking of moving South

Mississippi feels like the boonies and has a heavy drawl, but they also seem to have amazing food everywhere.

I'm taking my break at a very average looking gas station that has truck parking. Like most such places, they have some hot food off to the side. Usually such places have very sad dried out pizzas, but this places almost restaurant quality hot wings in a freakin gas station.

Another place I stopped at off I-20 had damn good burgers, baked beans with a touch of some kind of BBQ / Spice flavor, and they sold racks of ribs. Jesus.

You’re in BBQ belt.

Well, this took a few weird turns.

I came to the Eastern Shore area across the bay from Mobile, AL. I did a year of Regional driving to get established and then quit to switch jobs. In Feb. this year I hired on to a company saying Home Most Days in the ad. The hours really suck, but it really is home most days. I suppose even after long shifts, if I can make it home to my own place to eat and washup instead of sleep in a truck at a truckstop, that's still an incremental improvement.

Along with that, my plan had been to join meetup groups or hangout at a Maker Space, but the Pandemic sh;t all over my plans to be more social. It's also shown how fvcked in the head some people can be here over things like masks.

Meanwhile natural disasters continue on like Hurricane Laura.

If things can remain somewhat stable, I'm still considering another move to San Antonio, TX or a little north to San Marcos in case I'd like to drive up and checkout Austin without actually living there with their higher cost of living.

Otherwise, if this country continues to erode politically or socially because America is insane, I'm tempted to just GTFO if I can make that work.

Hang in there, this pandemic has shown there are crazy people all over, not just down south. We get nearly the same stupidity up north.

Hopefully vaccines start coming out this fall and actually work and we can start to get back to some form of normal.

Videodrome San Antonio is a great f'in city. My Mom is originally from there, so I've spent a pretty decent amount of time there. Food is unreal and there's a ton to do.

San Marcos is alright, big ass mall with all the amenities lol, but you're closer to Schlitterbahn, and that place rules.

How is the crime in San Antonio? I've heard it is on the high side.

No state income tax in Tennessee, which is also a nice perk.
Mom lives in Chattanooga now, I was very pleasantly surprised by how cool of a town it is. Great downtown feel, lots of mountains and hiking, and has that small town / good sized city feel to it so it's not overwhelming. Super laid back, it's definitely Tennessee's hippie town

nice....don’t they build a lot of cars there?

Okay this weather really sucks and I still get to find out of 2021 has more hurricanes for the Gulf.

I managed to get into a job though that's local shuttle / yard driving and building up that kind of experience.

Originally though, I wanted to get established and then pivot later moving to maybe Tennessee or Virginia or something, but had delays, medical bills hit my savings, and this Covid insanity.

I am also so done with the accent it drives me nuts.

Southern accent?

Southern accent?

Well, it's weird I live on the East side of Mobile Bay and it's not to bad. Unfortunately, I work on the West side of near Mobile and there is kind of a Mississippi influence or something on that accent.

It's a lot like this. It's like not half bad but also half verbal train wreck. When a couple of people in the break room are having a conversation like this I feel like just going some place else or sitting in the truck playing with my tablet. I hate to act anti-social, but OMF the accent.

EDIT: I should add some of this randomly shows up throughout Alabama like Montgomery or Tuscaloosa.

Going east to Georgia or the Carolinas it's the Reese Witherspoon brand of southern accent and I can deal with that. Going into Mississippi / Louisianai the s*** drives me nuts.

A former colleague was from Mississippi and here I thought he was saying “mang” this whole time lol

But that mang says “like” so many times he could be from “the valley” *nods over at glance to JinCA

Road trip time. Leaving Alabama and going back to the Midwest.

I got away from Winter for a while but aside from BBQ, I thought this area was kind of meh. Also, the weather was to much the other extreme the humidity here in the summer is so awful.

Being here for Hurricane Sally was fvcking crazy.

I had at one point consider a pivot to Texas, but changed my mind after seeing them surprisingly cripped by winter blasts and their s***ty infrastructure. I did do a temp assignment for my company in DFW, and did oddly like the big metro environment, but that area is a mess of construction lane expansion or really bad roads.

Stopped at Buccee's near Madison, AL. Still in this state because of the sh:t traffic.

Grabbed a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich. For a business that is a travel stop, they put out absurdly good BBQ, so might as well grab one on the way out of here.

When back in the Midwest though, I will enjoy a sit down meal in a classic diner. It's so weird, the south at least by the coast doesn't really have Diner style restaurants. Except I guess for the Waffle House everywhere. Or maybe sort of Crackel Barrel.

Also, will find a Deep Dish Chicago style pizza place please lol.

And no boiled peanuts.
