I have about had it up to here with all the new tipping options being added to every place I go now. What are your thoughts on this new trend of being prompted for tips for the employees, even at NON restaurants. Even tip jars at non restaurants.

I will do my 20%+ at restaurants. I am fine with that. But now I am seeing that some places are defaulting to 3 tip choices, 22, 25 and 28%. I see some places put an option for tipping and they have nothing to do with serving. I frequent a virtual golf location, where you rent bays. When you are done, you are prompted for the option to tip the person at the register. Why the f*** should I tip them? Should I put a tip jar at my work desk because I did my job and chose to work this job at the salary I get paid?

Last night I ordered Noodles & Company on the app for my wife and I to DRIVE there, PICK UP and take home. I the app, I am prompted to tip them. Why? And now how my mind works is that they will see that I chose NOT to tip them, and they will s*** in my food or something.

This needs to change IMO. What are your thoughts?

If I’m in a restaurant I tip well. If I pickup, I usually leave a dollar. During Covid, when picking up, I tipped more than I would normally do in a restaurant, which is 20%. So I’d tip more than that. When there’s a service, I tip. The gold thing you mentioned, unless you’re being served food, no reason to tip.

I would agree with that. I too tipped more during Covid. Do you feel guilty when you are prompted to tip but choose not to? Like I was a Jersey Mikes subs, and went in, and they made a sub and rung it up. I am prompted for a tip, and they even ring a bell if you do tip. I stopped tipping there now though as I don't see the need to.

If I drove to get pizza or other take out, but it was the Carside thing, I would still tip. There was appreciation from the workers there they gave me extra dipping sauce or parmesan.

I sometimes see small restaurants with a tip jar labeled as including the kitchen staff. I'll usually put in something especially if I liked the food.

So far, I haven't really encountered much in the was of tips for cashiers though.

I tip $1 in that case.

The problem is that the workers are at the mercy of the system. By not tipping you are just sticking it to the person who needs it and deserves it most, but then by tipping you are also facilitating the employer paying garbage wages. I tip well (20% at least), even if the service was not great.

But how do you know what the person is making? Some workers could be making $20 an hour.

That's true. But they could also be making $10. The employer will typically pay the least amount they have to, so $20 is likely the exception to the rule in a restaurant, unless they are a manager or cook.

Sorry, I mean for non restaurant service or like in the case of say a sub shop. I know servers are normally paid less than standard wage. It's still $2.33 an hour here in Madison, WI. But we start our servers substantially higher at our Hilton locations.

Unless they’re a manager, they’re making minimum wage.

I don’t know what it’s like in other states, but here in California minimum wage is different if your in a large city like LA or SF, but also dependent on how large the company is. So if a restaurant has lees than 20 employees or full timers then their minimum wage is lower as well. It’ there’s so many minimum wage tiers here….. why @JinCA what did your generation do to us 😆 jk

That's just it, if the tips just get spread among the entire staff, that's not a tip. That's wages that I'm paying instead of the employer. Just bake that into the price of what I'm buying. I have no idea who needs tipping anymore.

I always tip well in sit down restaurants. That was simple. People make less money and a tip is expected. There's interaction there (I'd argue to just pay people and stop all that too). When I go to pick up a pizza and a guy standing next to the oven hands me a box, is that tip worthy? Again, just bake it into the price I pay. Pizza now costs a boatload of money. Now, if it is a pizza delivery? I get that there's a tip (again I'd argue to just bake that into a delivery). A lot of stores that do online delivery want you to pre-tip, then someone puts a box by your door and rings the bell. I'm pre-tipping a person I never meet?

The other problem is I rarely have cash on me anymore. I'll toss a buck in the jar, if I have one. Now that cash gets used so infrequently, I don't have it.

It was said before, I don't know who makes what. I'm a good tipper, but I feel like I'm expected to figure out someone's economic situation on the fly now. It isn't about fair wages (I'm all about that), it is about who's paying them.

I think we are on the exact same page. You said it a bit better than I did with your examples.

Yee, there’s one spot that I go to for great pizza, I rarely go there cos it’s so good I don’t want to get bored of it….and it’s also kinda out of the way, like 30 mins. And the last time I went, I grabbed my pizza and they flipped the screen, and they had 22, 25 and 30 dollar tips as suggested…
